I have had this happen to me after I had a cesarian section with my daughter so I know it happens I am 3 months post op vsg and I think it is starting;/ How long does it last is there anything we can do to stop it? Please share your experience...

mine started about 3 1/2 months out, stopped about 4 months later..  it wasn't really bad, i just cut my hair short so it wasn't as noticeable....  turns out after i lost 100 lbs, i actually looked GOOD in short hair!  win-win!

some folks swear by biotin, other say it doesn't do anything except make your hair thicker when i grows back in...  my sis-in-law got me some nioxin shampoo, but it was too harsh on my hair, and didn't make any difference anyways...

it will grow back....   just look at it as a small price to pay on your way to being healthy!

I have been taking biotin and zinc since before surgery. I can only say my hair is growing faster...

My hair loss started at about 4-4 1/2 months post-op and is finally slowing down, but hasn't stopped and I am 7 months out. I have been taking biotin everyday for the last couple of years and I still lost major amounts of hair.  My hair has thinned out quite a bit but most people can't tell ( I have lots of hair), but boy oho boy can I tell. It used to bother me at first but I kinda stopped stressing over it because there is nothing I can do but wait it out.

Mine started around 4 months and lasted 6-8 weeks. I didn't lose so much that others noticed it, but did find that I had to mess with it a bit more when styling because it didn't sit the same. It was very short term for me.

I hear people recommend things like the biotin all the time, but I don't know that it works at preventing hair loss. If it did, probably everyone would take it! I think it's probably more likely to improve what's coming in as it grows back.

I am also taking zinc every 3 days for hair loss. I haven't hit that part yet, but I'm hoping taking the zinc now, will help it not be so bad when it does start. I am used to my hair constantly falling out anyway, since I have had adrenal fatigue and a hormone imbalance for a few years now. I use a swiffer everyday on each level of my house just for my hair, and my vacuum is always clogged with my hair. Even with all that, you can't tell. I have long hair. It has thinned a bit, but nothing too dramatic. I just hope it doesn't get worse and start to panic if I see huge clumps. Hopefully by then I would be thin enough to support a shorter hair cut, without looking like a cabbage patch kid.

I don't think you can stop the hair loss. Perhaps minimize it, since it is just a natural thing we go through as a result of the rapid weight loss. Your body takes the vitamins and minerals it needs to make the organs and body function, so it feeds it to those parts first and your hair gets it last. Use it as a great opportunity to try out a new hairstyle. I know it will make me break out of my comfort zone of a pony tail, which I've had for over 10 years.

Mine started at about 4 mo and lasted about 2 mo. I lost quite a bit of hair, evenly all over though. Luckily I have a ton of hair to begin with so no one noticed except me, and my hair stylist. It started growing back a couple months later and now I have a bunch of hair that is about 3 inches long! No one but me seems to notice this either. Years ago when I had my lap band surgery I didn't lose any hair.

The advice I was given was that you could minimize it by keeping your protein way up (60-70 for women, 70-90 for men).

Funny I was just wondering this. I was thinking that maybe it had been long enough and I had dodged the bullet. But sounds like no.

Just after 3 months post op, I noticed some hair loss, now it's coming out like crazy, and it's starting to freak me out. I'm 5 months post op now. Some people were talking about products. What is biotin? What is nioxin? Does anyone have any experience with over the counter hair growth vitamins? I don't know what to do, I'm definitely not a short hair kind of girl...  :(

The paperwork I got from Dr. Aceves says that taking zinc is supposed to help with this; my husband was told getting in the right amount of protein makes a difference.

You would think there would be a more standardized way of dealing with this... but I guess if there was, we could come up with a way to allow cancer patients to keep their hair too.
