total knee replacement on 3-29-12

Hey everyone,

I'm 6.5 months postop and down almost 90 lbs.  I'm having a total knee replacement on Thursday and I'm scared to death of the pain and the possibility of gaining weight.
Would love any advice.

Thanks,'
Marie

Two of my sisters had knee replacements young(40s) and both said they wish they had done it sooner.  Im sure you will have a better recovery now that ur almost 90 lbs dwon.  Dont worry about weight gain, focus on healing and physical therapy.  Best of luck to you!

My 78 year old mother had knee replacement surgery last summer and had little pain and is doing great now and so will you!  Keep up posted Marie.
You'll gain a little weight from the fluids they pump into you in the hospital, but your sleeve will always be there for you.  Just stick to your plan and you'll be fine.  You may have to adjust your intake a little since you won't be able to get as much physical activity for awhile.  But concentrate on what you CAN do.  Best of luck for a safe and successful surgery!

Hi - I am afraid I am headed down that path as well and I am not quite 4 months out yet. I injured the knee(at least that's what I think), and the xray showed lots of arthritis. I have hardly been able to put weight on that leg for the last 6 weeks or so. I had an MRI done last week and will see the dr. on Friday, but I am really afraid that will be the  recommendation. Truthfully I am  not overly worried about weight gain, because I would continue the same food plan and do the physical therapy that's recommended. I have no  idea how long the recovery is. I am just really bummed because I  had hoped that by losing weight I would delay these types of problems. I  have lost about 60 pounds which is certainly easier on the knees, but I need to lose another 40-50 at least. I really don't want to be under anasthesia again so soon, and I  am not looking forward to telling my employer that I need to be out on medical leave again. But having said all of  that, if that is what it takes, then we need to do it.

I guess I would look at it as one more step in your journey towards health, even though it's  a step you didn't want to take!

Marie, you will be so grateful that the 90 lbs is gone. I'll prob have knee replacement some day and I'm so grateful it will be post-VSG as the recovery will be sooooo much easier.

I don't know if that is helpful, but I hope you find it encouraging.

Hugs and Prayers! My husband had both knees replace twelve years ago. He actually lost forty lbs because he was more active. Three years ago he had gastric bypass and lost another 100 lbs. You will be so glad you lost weight before the surgery. Best wishes on a speedy recovery.
Hi Marie...

I have not had my sleeve yet...but...I had both my knees replaced (total) in 2009 and had to have my left on revised in Aug. of 2011 cuz the tibial portioned failed. Anyway...I have had 7 surgeries since 2009 and the knees, quite honestly, were the easiest of all!

Now, don't get me wrong.....it is uncomfortable especially the first few days, but depending on where you are at now, as far as pain goes it is so much better! What I mean is, the pain that I had before I had them replaced was so unbearable for soooo long that the surgery....well...it was a breeze in comparison.

You will do just fine and make sure that you get started on PT immediately.....Oh! and this is huge..huge...huge!!! HAVE THEM PUT YOU ON THE CPM (continuous passive motion) MACHINE IN RECOVERY....no matter how crappy you feel--get on that sucker right at the get go....it will make all the difference in the world to your range of motion for the future. Once that scar tissue forms, and it happens fast, well...you don't want your knee to have limited bending capability is all I'm sayin.

Finally,
And this is big too....
Make sure that they order you a polar ice machine....AND TAKE IT HOME WITH YOU...IT'S YOURS!!!
That machine will be your saving grace through recovery, after physical therapy..etc....it is awesome. If your doctor did not mention these two machines to you as of yet....get on the phone with him/her tomorrow and tell them you want an order for them so that they are there for you at the hospital....INSIST ON IT.

You will do great and you will be so glad you had it done.....you will have moments that suck big time...but it is worth it....
