Did your reflux get worse?

I have reflux that I control with a Nexium everyday.  This condition started when I had my first child 16 years ago, and it needed to be Nexium controlled 5 years ago shortly after baby number three.  I figured it was because of my increased abdominal girth.

I don't mind if I have to keep taking the little purple pill forever as long it continues to work.  Have any of you had your reflux get better after you lost weight with the sleeve?  Have any of you had reflux so bad that you curse your sleeve?
Mine has gotten so much better that I do not take a pill every day now.  I have not had reflux since my surgery.
Glad to hear it.  I really think that mine is caused mostly by the pressure of the extra weight.  My surgeon listed the reflux as a con for the sleeve surgery because he would prefer the RnY for me.  I know what surgery I can live with, and it is the sleeve!
Mine is worse but I suck at taking my meds... and no I never cursed my sleeve (but I now say it's a man because what woman would say no to bread) I started taking mine 15 years ago with baby number one.

I never had issues with acid before surgery and I'm in my 40's.  2 weeks post op I developed HORRIBLE acid problems.  After trying Nexium and Prilosec, they finally switched me to a new medicine that is called Dexilant.  It has been amazing how much better I feel, thank God!

My point though is that my surgeon, while discussing my acid problems, told me that if you have reflux prior to surgery, it usually gets much worse after VSG so they dont do it and go right for the RnY bypass.

Good luck.

But you see I won't let him give me a RnY.  If you had to do it again, would you go for a RnY instead of the VSG because of the horrible reflux?  On some of the seminar slides, they list a reduction of reflux as one of the pros.  Thanks for getting back to me : )
I can't really answer that because I didn't have it before hand.  If I got it this bad not having it before, then I cant imagine how much worse it could have been had I had acid problems before surgery.  I can only imagine it would be exponentially worse.  I would just trust what my surgeon said (or your surgeon in this case.)  They have spent their lives studying these issues so hopefully they know the %'s of people that get acid post op and what is best.  I don't like thinking I might be living with this acid the rest of my life though, I can tell you that much.  I have been miserable!  I might have gone with the RnY if I could have seen into the future and know if I'm going to be having acid coming up my throat in the middle of the night for the rest of my life.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thank you for answering back.  I hope you feel better soon.
 Thank you :)

I have had reflux for a few years now due to major disabilities I have - the hosp changed my reflux meds nexium to a med that made me vomit ironically - my gp told me to go back to my regular nexium and is better than the alternative - however I feel the reflux with almost eveything I swallow but comparing that and being fat ill take it coz i t dont make me vomit anymore - hope this helps someone

Before surgery my acid reflux wasn't bad, it got worse after surgery now I take Omeprazole every morning and If I don't take it, I can't eat and I'll start vomiting. I'm 5 months post op

Does the medicine keep it manageable, or do you wish you had a RnY (which has its set of drawbacks)?
My reflux was bad in the first place (Nexium helped) but definitely worsened after the surgery. In the hospital after the procedure, they started me on Pepcid. Did not work for me at all. Finally asked my surgeon if I could take my Nexium and he was like "Oh, yeah, that's probably better for you". lol Anyway, I still have terrible GERD, sometimes to the point of wretching. Have to keep on the Nexium but it does do the trick.

I had reflux prior to surgery.  Chatted with someone at my surgeon's office about the possibility of it getting worse and he said his got better BECAUSE he had a slidling hiatal hernia that was repaired during his sleeve surgery.

Turned out I had one too, so for me it has gotten better.

Now I take my PPI every night as prescribed for all my surgeon's patients and I don't get woken up with pain from reflux.  If I forget I feel a little gnawing pain in my tummy that will pass after taking my meds.

You know, I never knew what a hiatal hernia was before I read this post & googled it. Now I think I have one. =D
