Bougie size?

Hi Everyone,

I'm getting scheduled soon for my revision from band to sleeve. I wanted to find out if you knew before going into surgery what bougie size your surgeon was using? I plan on asking my surgeon when I see him again before surgery, but I wanted to find out what your surgeons used? I'm not sure if the size will make a huge difference or not. Any information on this would be great.

Thanks.

I have no idea what my bougie size is.  I never asked and my surgeon never mentioned it.  It is my understanding that it is only one variable in how big your stomach ends up being.  Some stomachs are just naturally longer and will hold more volume than a shorter stomach, even with the same bougie size.  The surgeon's technique also plays a role.

But I just had to say congrats on your amazing weight loss with the band!!

Don't know - Don't really care.  Its trivia and doesn't really change a thing.  I should eat my planned portions or until I am full then stop.

Bougie size is not even an accurate predictor of food volume.  I could have a 32f french bougie and have more capacity than the next person with a 36f because my stomach is naturally longer.

Whats going to matter to restriction is how much your stomach can hold.  You can measure that easily enough with the cottage cheese test when you get to stage 3.   Other variables come into play as well - like how fast you eat, the density of the protein, etc.

What is the cottage cheese test?

Measure out a portion of cottage cheese, say like 4 ounces.  Eat until you are full, then see how much cottage cheese is left.  Thats the volume your stomach holds.

Honestly, I can get full on about a cup at 6 months out.

Cottage cheese is one of those things I can eat endlessly so this is no help to me BOOO

You can really use anything, so long s you can measure it.  Best not o use a slider!

My surgeon uses a 40 or 42 I think, not sure what he used on me. He told me not to worry about the bougie size because he has great success with his patients. So I am not worrying about it but to some people it is a big deal.

I have a 36f oversewn but I never asked me surgeon how tight or small he actually makes it. Speaking of cottage cheese test, I ate nonfat cottage cheese last night & measured out 3/4 of a cup. I finished it but I kinda forced 2-3 of the last bites down. I'm not sure how many ounces that is...

Carmelita, thank you so much for your long and informative post.  I am 9 months post-op.  I believe I was more comfortable eating 1/2 cup of cottage cheese.  Maybe I should have clarified that I ate about 1/4 of a cup more but it was over an additional 20 minutes.  That's what I meant by forcing it, sorry.  I dont usually eat, then wait and then eat more so that I get more food in.  I always eat and then when I'm satisfied, I stop for the meal.  It was later in the day when I ate my dinner of cottage cheese and I was barely tipping 600 calories for the day.  I wanted to reach my protein goal so I finished of the rest.
I also fully read the attached blog.  I found it very insightful, thank you!  :)

Geezuz, I feel kinda dumb asking this but for me being 9 months out, is 6 fluid ounces good or bad?  I was more comfortable at 1/2 cup but it was probably less than 3/4 cup.

Ive been able to eat a cup comfortably since 4 weeks out.  I always measure out exactly 225 grams.  Everyones different.  I can also eat 4 ounxces of chicken pretty comfortably.

Hey there!!  I just got my band removed and a revision to the sleeve 7 weeks ago!  I love it!!  I asked my surgeon before surgery, and he says he uses a 34F Bougie, and also said that he oversews.  I have pretty good restriction or a small capacity and have no issues with foods.  It's great!!

i was said 32 fr oversewn. i have amazing restriction but im only 1 month out

My doctor uses a 32f and I have good restriction, at almost three years out, I can eat what other people my size eat normally.  Knowing what I know now, I would personally not want any less restriction that what I have now.  I can eat about 3 ounces of meat and 1/4 cup veggies comfortably.
