I joined ww because I can't get my 20 lbs off, and need moral support to help me.

Doesn't your surgeon have a support group?

Yes, but its 70 miles away and only twice a month.  I was a ww member before and thought I would join for a while to get re-motivated.

WW made me obsess about food. I was constantly thinking about how much I could eat, when, and how many points I had left. But, if it works for you, then go for it!!

What about counseling? Is that an option? I find that much more personalized for my particular struggles. It doesn't solve all my problems, but helps me deal better with my own food demons.

I agree with you there.  In my experience, WW, nutrisystem, zone, Atkins, etc all exist to sell product and get the latest celeb endorsement.

I actually have had pretty good success on WW in the past. The only reason I quit going was because I couldn't afford the $40 a month for the monthly pass at the time, and then I realized I needed more than just the e-tools, but again, money was really tight, so I had to quit for the time being.

Honestly, if I find myself needing WW again when I get closer to goal, I'll have no qualms with going back. My leader when I was going regularly told me that a lot of people who have had wls end up using WW for the last few pounds or for maintenance purposes. I'm sure she was not being sleeve-specific, but still.

I say if it works for you, go for it!

I was wondering if when you get to goal and become a lifetime member can go free even if you have had WLS?

I've never seen anything in their paperwork that says that wls patients cannot be lifetime members.  If you're that worried about it, I just wouldn't tell them.  They'll never know... lol ;)

If I remember correctly, in order to become lifetime you have to lose at least 5 pounds while participating in WW, make goal in the range they set (or have a doctor's note stating another weight that is appropriate for you), and maintain the goal 6 weeks.  So if you lose your last 5+ pounds while paying fees to WW, you would qualify.

I have 20 lbs to lose to reach my goal, so I will qualify.  I am looking forward to maintenance.
I was a member for 25 yrs, but could not get the weight off.  Now, I am really motivated to stay thin and exercise and be healthy.

Not all people on this site are as supportive.

Thanks for your comments....

Even though our eating plans may be different from WW, the way they approach behavior changes is very relevant to us.  I hope that you find the support you're seeking and kick those last 20 pounds to the curb!  My surgery is 8 days away, so I hope to join you in the future!

Thank you for your positive posting.  Yes, I am excited to have weekly weight ins, and yes, with the WLS eating pattern on WW its workable.

I'm another fan of weigh****chers!! I think it's the best 'program' out there!! But I'm wondering how that will work post-op. There is NO WAY with your sleeve you can eat the number of points the plan requires. I would even guess that if you did meet the point requirements, you'd be exceeding your surgeon's VSG plan?

If you are basically just doing it for the weekly meetings and support, well that's one thing but as far as following the true WW plan, won't you be discouraged??

I've also noticed that these past few weeks you've been posting about certain foods and being shocked at the carb values in them.   Do you keep track of everything you eat now?  Have you looked into My Fitness Pal.com? It's very much the same as weigh****chers in that you track everything you eat, but it's FREE!!!

All that said, I'm still on my old WW board and have some wonderful friends I have made there.

I hope you can find something that works for you!!

With WW, there are two plans you can follow:  PointsPlus and Simply Filling Technique (SFT).  Simply Filling would be doable with a sleeve... counting points would be a little more difficult.

SFT basically means you are eating most of your foods from categories that qualify as "simply filling."  It has you NOT counting points on a daily basis, and then you get so many weekly points to use on things that are not SFT foods.  Most non-fried meets, fruits, veggies, and fat free cheeses are SFT foods.  So, if you eat something that doesn't qualify as SFT, you take its point value off of your weekly allowance.

That's a very simplified explanation of that part of the plan, but that's it in a nutshell.

AAgh, makes sense, I forgot about that option. Sounds like the old CORE program.

It's been a while :)

It's pretty much exactly like the old CORE plan.  But now they let you go between the two plans on a day to day basis... it's odd.

Right now I don't think I need to be there, but I might go back at some point.

At my gym they have a weight loss session every 7 weeks. We learn new exercises we can do at home using tubing, as well as making us journal everyday. It is nice to have people there who can support you and understand how difficult weight loss is.

I'm a Lifetime WW member who lost the weight but within a few years had gained it all back plus more.  When I started back again, I ended up on The Zone program but went to WW just to have the weekly weigh-ins, etc.  I found it very difficult to sit there with them pushing no-fat, low-fat and high carbs (this was in the 90s) when I was loosing weight well on more protein.  Each time they praised me on how much weight I was losing.  I finally realized I really didn't need them and stopped going.

But I obviously understand the desire to have a face-to-face support and WW can do that.  I don't know what their current program is.  The only issue I can see is if they are telling you to eat in a way that doesn't work with your sleeve.  Even then, you may still find the weigh-in accountability useful (as I did for awhile).

[I'm not gaining weight. I keep lowering my goal!] [I LOVE MY SLEEVE!]

I wouldn't mention you had WLS in meeting.....if you can help it.

I did WW for my six month diet requirement and was pretty much shunned from the group meetings when they found out I was having surgery.

The leader was polite but the members were not.
