What happens if we drink a soda?

So, I'm 4 months out from my surgery and just accidentally took a few sips of a soda before I realized I'm not supposed to drink it anymore! I'm all freaked out!!! Do we explode or something if we drink carbonated beverages? Just wondering what reprocussions there are. Eek!

At four months out probably nothing more than bloating and belching and maybe some pain from those two, depending on how much you had.  The real problems with soda is the lack of any conceivable nutritional value and the sugar triggering carb cravings.

In general the problem with carbonation is the expanding gas in the stomach swelling the tummy, possibly stretching it, and in immediate post op period tearing the staple line.

You are correct.  You will explode.

Honestly, I doubt anything will happen.  Some people say it makes them very uncomfortable.  I did once drink a sugar-free carbonated lemonade. and it didn't bother me at all.  Yeah, I know I'm not supposed to drink carbonated drinks, but I didn't realize it was carbonated when I bought it, I was just happy it was zero calories...and it was HOT that day!  I drank all sixteen ounces and it went down just like water -- but tasted better!

I have heard some of us have been advised that carbonation will stretch our sleeves, but I was told our sleeves are not that stretchy.  I haven't tried carbonation again because I keep feeling like I'd be doing something "wrong" but I didn't have any bad effects the one time I did.

Unfortunately, I have read on here on occassion (not often) where people claim that they still drink soda and won't give it up.

For me, I took 2 sips of diet coke while trying to stay awake at 3 am driving back home from visiting family in Ohio and the bubbles made my sleeve feel horrible.  It was surely not worth it and I wont be doing that again.

I like loosing 100 lbs more then how diet coke tastes anyway.

Good luck!

You gain your weight back.
Seriously that is one of the things that do lead people back to regain.

I quit drinking my diet pepsi almost a month ago even though my surgery is still 3 weeks away.  That was probably the worst part of this for me as I was definetly addicted.

I have had a few sips on my husband's Dr. Pepper (I was a former addict ) and I don't have any problems. But since my surgery 6 months ago I just don't want it like I used to. It's not AS good as I used to make it out to be. I'd much rather drink water or lemonade. Like the guys above, my weight loss is SO much better than soda....but I don't think it'll hurt you.
I am sure it will be okay. As long as it doesn't become a habit, I am sure it isn't a big deal. I have heard that it can eventually expand the sleeve if you consume it frequently. I don't think anyone knows for sure yet. I am not going to risk it. You didn't even realize what you were doing so I don't think it's a big deal.

Why would you explode? IT's a liquid, your pyloric valve opens and fluid leaves your stomach.

I've been drinking soda, not even diet, since being around 8 months out. Just cleared 3 years post-op, and my capacity is the same as it was back then.

I should add: 1) I never had issues maintaining my weight loss as I below goal before I introduced a soda back into my life 2) Having 1 on an occasion, or a couple times a week does NOT cause me any additional cravings, it's not a trigger for me, I can take it or leave it to be honest.

USAF wife, thanks for your input on the topic.

I too have drank soda here and there. Just a few sips of my kids soda at dinner from time to time. Darn Dr. Pepper! He He

Anyway, if I drank more than like 2 sips, it made me feel all bubbly inside. Not in a good way, in a fizzy, bubbles everywhere, with no way out kind of way. Yuck!

So, I just don't do it anymore. I too have great restriction and have done very well so far.

I just thought I would give my two cents and thank USAF wife for being so honest. I really love that about you. You are real and tell it like it's really been. The good, bad and the ugly. He He. It really helped me on my journey not to be too hard on myself. You showed me that I can be successful and still be human.

Thanks so much, it's made the past year so much easier!
On my way!!!!!!

Ussr wife...thanks for sharing! Nice to hear that you are so far out and haven't had problems with it.
I promise that I'm not advocating that anyone do it. And, it's definitely not something that's "healthy". I live in a land of heavy moderation in maintenance because of my own food issues. Some can't handle adding things back in, I can. It's just what works for me and my life post-op.

At my two months visit to my surgeon, he came in with a bottle of  diet pepsi.  I took the opportunity to ask why soda pop isn't recommended.  He said after your stomach heals, you can drink diet soda in moderation.  He said it will not stretch your sleeve.  He said it gives some patients painful gas, but if that wasn't a problem, then it was okay to have it occasionally.  I rewarded myself by going through McDonalds and getting me a child size diet coke on the way home.
