Does anyone have experience with the 5 day pouch test here?

I've been struggling with carb issues for a while now, it's been worse since I quit drinking alcohol a few months ago. I think I'm ready to deal and I'm wondering about something. I've read about the 5 day pouch test. I know I don't have a "pouch" but does it work for those of use with VSG? I'm hoping it may be the tool to get back on track.

I've heard that the 5DPT is a gimmick, though I haven't tried it myself. It sounds like you just need to carb detox. Spend the next 48 hours ONLY eating protein - you don't have to do plain, "boring" things like a plain chicken breast, but keep any sauces as low carb as possible (many pre-made sauces contain sugar). Also, drink plenty of water to flush your system. The cravings WILL subside. This is what I do when I find carbs creeping in and it works like a charm.

Best of luck!

thx. I somtimes wonder if the sweet protein drinks are conributing. I know they are not sugar, but the substitue may be doing the same thing. I do not think I can eat enough "real"  food to get the need protein in yet without them. Just wondering.

I have never done the test... but I have experience detoxing from carb issues.  Like Chrissy said- just rid yourself of the carbs.  It takes a few days (3-4 in my case), but by the 4th day restriction is kicked in and then some.  When I do this, I replace a few means or snacks with protein shakes.  Then only proteins with small amounts of green leafy veggies. No grains, no processed anything, no junk food of any kind, don't drink right after eating... the normal stuff.

It sounds pretty gimmicky and crash-diety to me.  Things I'm not interested in.  I'd work on decarbing.  Focus on proteins and vegetables.

I did it a few months ago. It was to cut the cravings.  So 2 days protein shakes, then you can add tuna or canned chicken, fish or ground meat for a day and then chicken breast.  So basically no carbs. After the first day, my cravings passed and I was not hungry.  Days 3-5 I mostly ate fish.  It did what it was intended to which was to cut  the cravings and detox.  You can definitely modify it.  At the end I lost 10 pounds and realized how much I missed veggies.

^^^^  What Gwen said

I think if you revert to basics, cut down on the carbs and stick to dense proteins and vegetables, you'll be fine.  The 5-Day Pouch isn't going to accomplish anything different.  Make better choices and track proteins and carbs.  Good luck.

yes, this.

the 5DPT is a crash diet.

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

Be easy on yourself. If you recently stopped alcohol, it is common to crave carbs and sweets. The founders of AA even describe it!! Gets less and less after the months go by. If it is really important for you to stay off alcohol, then try not to expect too much else out if yourself right away. Slowly add in more changes.

Jen, thanks, that's why I have been trying not to worry about it too much until now, but I'm 3 1/2 months out from quitting and the brain chemistry should be healed eonough to let me get back on track with this WOE. I think the detoxing carbs will be hard and I really do not want to fall back into the wine barrel cause that leads to all kinds of carbs.

I'm seeing most folks think it is a "crash diet" but really how is it different that what we went thru those first few weeks post surgery? the possability of losing 10 pounds in less than a week sounds nice since I'm only 10 pounds from 100% EWL :) I'm going to make a list and see how that looks and pick my time and just quit the carbs.
