Chewable Vitamins Forever?
I am almost 4 weeks post op and have been taking my chewable vitamins since 1 week post op. My question is, will I have to take chewables forever? Or can I use pills at some point? Is there something about chewables that make them more easily absorbed? Or is it just a matter of making it go down easier in a brand new tiny tummy? I know I'll need vitamins forever but just wondering about chewables vs. swallowing pills.
I'm 3 months out. I couldn't tolerate the chewables. The ones I got were so disgusting that I wasn't good about taking them. I asked my NUT and she said to go ahead and take regular vitamins but to cut them in half if I had a hard time swallowing them. I actually find it easier to swallow them when they are whole (I think because of the shape). I do take liquid B12 and chewable calcium but everything else is a pill.
I'm a year out, and I take all pills as non-chewables now. But, I take them spaced out throughout the day.
I keep my Calcium w/Vitamin D at work (2 pills) and my glucosamine joint compound (3 pills), and take them here and there throughout the day. Then I take my multi-vitamin, biotin, and potassium at night. I can usually take them together because the biotin and potassium are small pills. I still use the "under the tongue" B-12. Was told that one has to remain a non-pill. I do not take additional iron per my doctor.
If you're only taking calcium once a day, you're likely not getting enough. The ASMBS says we need 1500mg a day which needs to be taken 500-600mg at a time. The only way to check if we're getting enough calcium is with a bone density scan, since blood will leach calcium out of the bones if we're lacking. I.e., a blood test won't be accurate.

The ASMBS recommends taking chewables for 3-6 months post-op. So, that's what I would do! I've switched to pills after about 3 months, except for calcium citrate, at this point and haven't had any problems with them.
