Question about drinking before/during meals
I'm in the supervised weight loss phase and thought I might start trying to eliminate drinking before and during meals to prepare myself for post-op life. Can someone share the guidelines with me? Do you see any reason I shouldn't try to adjust this behavior now?
Thanks in advance!!!

My program's requirements were no liquids 30 minutes before, during a meal, or 30 minutes after. I personally drink right up until after eating, but don't drink during or 30 mins after a meal. I've tried and it's uncomfortable for me. Plus, you want your stomach to stay as full as it can for as long as it can. Drinking can increase the chances of the food being washed down too quickly and the need to eat coming sooner. You should ask your surgeon specifically what they want from you, and their rationale. All doctors are different, and they can guide you to where you need to be. Good luck! :-)
Thank you! This gives me a good starting point. I figured the instructions might vary and appreciate your response!

I think it's worth it to try it a few times beforehand, just to get a sense of it. I found this very hard in the pre-op stage, and wondered how I'd ever adjust. Well, you adjust! You really do, and honestly it's not that hard. It becomes like second nature.
A few things:
My surgeon's office says to stop drinking 30 minutes before a meal but I never do. I give it a little bit but I swear I can feel the liquid moving through my stomach and that's never been a problem.
My calcium chew (really kinda like a lozenge that I dissolve in my mouth) is hot cinnamon flavored and it's like a nice palette cleanser after meals. I also will chew gum for a little bit aftewards, since I like to get the taste out of my mouth sometimes.
You will NOT want to drink after eating. You just won't. Do it once and you'll never do it again. RNYers run the risk of washing food through their stoma. Sleevers will feel miserable or throw up. The pyloric valve is closed, your tiny stomach is full of food, and there's nowhere for the water to go but up. I sometimes feel like I have to wait an hour after eating before drinking is comfortable.
Thank you for the detailed info. I have to ask, what brand is your calcium chew? I love cinnamon flavor like that and can see how after meals it would be great!
I know this part will be challenging to do. I was thinking about stopping the drinking after meals first and once I have that down, I could add another adjustment and so on. I'm trying to make as many adjustments now to make the process less shocking (if that makes sense).
Thanks again!

My main criteria for a calcium supplement was that it be sugar alcohol and sugar free, which left me very few options. At this point I could do Citracal petites, but I have found I like my supplement. Fair warning, my calcium supplement has a lot of bad reviews. But I think that's because people chew them and you have to let it dissolve in your mouth or it's really chalky and unpleasant. That said, I really like them! I know, sounds like a ringing endorsement. Anyway, I use the Bariatric Advantage Calcium Chews.
I can drink right up until I start a meal, but I can't drink during a meal or 30 minutes afterward. I'd start by not drinking during meals if you want to practice.
