Pre Op diet question
I started my two week liquid pre op diet on Monday and boy is it hard...especially when I prepare meals for my family. I have two questions, my plan calls for 1200 cal of liquid meal replacement drinks. The only one I seem to tolerate is the Premier Protein at 160 cal each and I just can't stomach 7 of them. I have been averaging 3-4 a day. I have seen posts that include clear broth or sugar free Popsicles....has anyone had other items besides the protein drinks during their pre op phase? My other question is strange, but thought I would throw it out there. Since I started drinking these shakes my breath is awful! I brush my teeth 3-4 times a day and even I can't stand it....lol. What is that from?
I'm scheduled for 11/17 and I am so excited to start this journey!
I don't know why the pre-op diets are so different. I'm on day 3. Mine is not all liquid. I have 3 protein shakes a day, 2 protein bars, dinner is 6 oz. of lean poultry or fish, 1 cup non-starchy vegetable, 1/2 cup of starch, 1 tsp. of fat. Total 1145 calories. I have a hard time drinking the 3 protein shakes I don't know how you would do 7. I use Atkins and they are 160 calories, too! I think the bad breath has to do with you body going into something called ketosis from all the protein. I don't really understand it. Maybe the vets on this board can help. Good Luck! I'm a day behind you!!
Ask your NUT or surgeon if you can do other things. Not us! Every pre-op plan is different.
The breath is because your body is in ketosis from having a protein-heavy/very low carb diet right now. That will pass.

For most people, when there's a calorie goal, that's the most calories you should get - not the number of calories you MUST get. So you're probably okay with only having 4-5 shakes a day instead of 7.
