I haven't been doing protein either. I don't think you are suppose to worry about that now. Just get in the water. I am 4 days out. Having trouble too. Finding I can get things down better if they are warm. Had two cups of decaf tea this morning. I have to take nausea meds every 8 hours.

Try different temperatures and different types of liquid.  Some people have better luck with crystal light.  Some people do better with hot, warm, or luke warm drinks than with cold ones.  Experiment until you find something that works for you and then sip, sip, sip all day.

You're only 5 days out. It's going to take a little time before you can get that much protein down. Sip the water slowly but constantly.

I'm 5 days out too and am having the same issues with protein. Yesterday was the first day I was able to get 50 oz of water. I think each day will get better and I have found that warm things go down better. Hang in there.

Congratulations on  the surgery!! Dr. Shin hasn't done mine yet. Still waiting on a date. I think what they say is right though. From everything I have heard it's more important to do the liquids right now. You'll get the protein in I'm sure....; )

I added unflavored protein to my broths and drinks.  It really helped with getting my protein in.

Its so hard to get in the protein right away. My post op instructions said to make getting in fluid my main focus for the first few weeks. It said that many people dont reach their protein goal for the first 3 weeks. :-) Try not to stress too much. Are you able to do shakes? Remember that those count for your fluid too! I like to make mine with milk... helps the flavor and adds protein too!

check out my blog!

I had a really hard time for the first 5-6 days as well, but things have gotten better this week (surgery 11/11). I found that warm chicken soup (healthy recipe cream of chicken strained) helped me turn a corner. It was the first warm thing I had tried and it helped to ease that tightness in my sternum and allow the liquid down. After that, I have kept with herbal teas and broths/soups.

My nutritionist and RN say they'd be perfectly happy if I drank my protein shakes and herbal tea to achieve the 64oz each day - anything liquid they count toward that 64oz goal.

Hope you're feeling better and have a good recovery!!

Allison
