Hungry?

I'm on post-op day 4.  I get hungry, and I don't like it.  I know that sounds silly, but when I get hungry, my brain still craves stuff "old" me liked--everything like fast food, etc.  I'm thinking maybe I'm just not taking in enough right now?  Today I was able to get up to two protein shakes (30 g of protein each), a popsicle, 2 cups of tea, 2oz of cottage cheese and half of a greek yogurt.

I'm just kind of lost about where I should be right now, and I was hoping that I wouldn't physically feel hungry after getting sleeved.  Any help?

Hunger at this point is most often just acid masquerading as hunger.  Are you taking a PPI such as prilosec or nexium?  If you're not, ask your surgeon about it.  A PPI clears things up for most people.

Gwenn, you reference this so often (I mean in a good way, not being snarky) it should be your signature! :)

No kidding. It frustrates me that surgeons don't warn us about this.

Hi ~

I'm 2 weeks out and what your taking in is exactly what I am still taking in.  I believe all we can do at this point is be patient and let our bodies tell us when our tummies are ready.  I have another 2 weeks on the pureed then on to soft foods.  Take Gwen's advice.  I was feeling hunger at the beginning as well.  Got a PPI from my surgeon, now everything is falling into place.  It's going to happen for us, we just need to take our time :)

Merry Christmas

Kim

Thanks!  Yes, I'm on Prilosec.  I do think I'm probably not drinking enough.  I have a feeling if I upped my water intake, I probably wouldn't get so hungry.  I LOVED water before surgery, now I can't stand it.  Today I finally mixed up some Crystal Lite and love it now.  I hadn't been following the sip sip sip rule.

Thank you for the responses!  I feel like all the research and reading I did before surgery went out the window once I came home.  I feel so clueless!

You might need a stronger PPI.

Really?  I have no clue.  I was on this dose of Prilosec before surgery for GERD.  So it's nothing new.  Am I really not supposed to be hungry?  I feel so stupid!

Your stomach is now smaller but producing the same amount of acid it used to be, so it makes sense you'd need to pull out the bigger guns for a few months post-op. Look into Nexium or Protonix.

And now, you shouldn't be suffering with hunger at this point!

I have a sleeve stomach and I can count on one hand the times I have been hungry in the last 5 years. I eat by the clock or I would starve.

if you think about "old" bad foods when you feel hunger, that could also be head hunger. If your body really needs nourishment, you will be happy with Greek yogurt, etc. if you think nah,I don't want Greek yogurt,I WANT chip, then that is head hunger.

i second a stronger PPI and while you are working on that, when you feel hunger, eat more yogurt or cottage cheese or other things on your plan. If you forget about bad things when you have eaten appropriately, then it is head hunger, not a real physiological need.
