I have noticed that a lot of post-op people have been reporting shoulder pain. I am curious as to why that happens? My VSG is tomorrow...so I would like to know before that. Thanks! :-)

It's gas believe it or not! I'm 3 days out. I feel like a lava lamp. It's the whole torso. Don't worry. I hear it will pass. It sucks. But, it'll go away! (just like the weight!)

They pump a lot of gas into your abdominal cavity during a laproscopic procedure so they can easily maneuver around in there. The gas moves around and can settle in your joints. The ONLY way to get it out of your body is to walk. Pain meds don't help with that pain. So get up as often and as long as you can post-op.

Good luck with your surgery!

I had the dreaded gas pains in my upper back. I found that a heating pad, while not able to get rid of the gas, was able to alleviate the discomfort while I was unable to be up and walking.

I didn't have shoulder but I had abdomen.  Gas X strips will get you through it.  Good luck

I believe it also has something to Bo with the vagus nerve. Even. Now,if. I have a lot or gas or sometimes when indeed to pop,I have pain in my left shoulder. It passes when the other passes.

the pain there talking about is co2 that is pumped into you when they do the surgery it is not in your stomach or intestines so gas ex is useless

i raises like air in water and walking helps move it around till it is absorbed and removed from your body

pain killers helped me alot and the best thing for me   and the nurses told me this also is a hot towel

Ugh, that is one thing I'm not looking forward to. It was rough after my gallbladder removal. But it was gone within a week. Walk as much as you possibly can.

Hi KayDeeCee - I am not sure how to send a separate message - but good luck today.  Mine is scheduled for tomorrow, but I'm worried that 18-24 inches of snow is going to interfere - cross your fingers for me!

Walking and warmth (heating pad, magic bags, etc.) help with the gas in the upper shoulders or body cavity.

Unfortunately because the gas is not in your intestinal tract (i.e., not in the stomach, airway, intestines, but rather in the body cavity itself) Gas-X will likely not help you at all. Mind you, if you are gassy in the intestinal tract, then yes, Gas-X will be the way to go. But the shoulder pain is from the gas they use to inflate your abdomen and torso to use the laparoscopy tools to do the surgery.

Be prepared to walk, sip, walk, sip, walk, sip all the way through the next week! Slowly but surely, you too will get there!
