heartburn after surgery, but not before surgery

I am three weeks out from surgery and having a really hard time with heartburn. I did not have heartburn before the surgery. I had a hiatal hernia repaired during the surgery. When I told the nurse that I have heartburn, she said, "You shouldn't have heartburn. You had your hernia repaired."  I'm glad I "shouldn't have" heartburn, but that doesn't negate the fact that I do.

As it turns out, I am seeing in the literature that some people do come out of it with heartburn (even though they didn't have it before).  They did not mention that as a possible outcome/side effect.

So, besides the discomfort, waking up at 3am and the raspy voice, I'm worried what this will do to the lining in my esophagus long term. Long term GERD leads to Barrett's, which is a precursor to esophageal cancer.

Did anyone have a similar situation and did it go away (and at what point did it go away?)?

Thanks!

Acid reflux is a common side effect of the sleeve.  Ask your surgeon for a PPI or get one over the counter....Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec

Are you taking a PPI such as Prilosec or Nexium?  It's pretty common for us all to need one in the beginning.

I was given Protonix in the hospital and a prescription for it when I was discharged, I haven't experienced any heartburn.

It's not just common, it's to be expected.....  Which is why most patients are sent home with an RX for Prilosec liquid for their post-surgery recovery,  please call your surgeon.  There is no logic in suffering.  Good luck.

Yes, I'm on a PPI. Sorry, I should have stated that.

I'm surprised that your surgeon didn't prescribe you a PPI to take post surgery.  It's fairly common.

I never had heartburn in my life prior to surgery.  Unfortunately it's one of the risks of having the VSG.  It doesn't always last forever, but for some of us it does.  It's easily managed by taking a PPI.

Call your surgeon and ask for either a prescription or recommendation on what to take.

Sorry, everyone, I should have mentioned that I'm on a PPI twice a day.

I'm not concerned about a temporary problem. My question is will it go away? . . . Did anyone have it for a few months and then did it go away?   If not, then over time that could be a serious problem in terms of the lining of the esophagus.

If you are on a PPI, are you still feeling heartburn?  If so, you need a different one.  My reflux comes and goes.  I mostly control it with Zantac.  Some people it goes away, some it doesn't.  My surgeon said long term use of a PPI is safe.  I am not totally convinced of that.
