Insomnia Please HELP

I am now 7 weeks out of surgery. Everything seems to be going great. But in the last 2 weeks it seems I am having more and more trouble sleeping. Now its to the point I am not sleeping at all. It's not like I can sleep during the day because I have two kids. (one that wants my attention all day).

I feel like the reason I'm not sleeping is my mind is racing and my legs and arms get restless. I am tired, its just as soon as the light is off and my head hit the pillows it starts. I have tried melatonin but now does nothing. I now its not iron because I take iron supplements at night.

Please help. Is there anything I can take? I have looked online but it is just others saying they have the same problem, no answer- no solution. I would really like to know if others have gone through this and what they did to help get sleep.

Years ago I was working midnight shift and could not sleep during the day.  I got something over the counter and took it a few days and after that I was able to sleep without it.

Sometimes the insomnia is related to the anesthesia from surgery.  For some folks it takes a long time to get it all out of your system.  There is not much you can do if that's the cause.  It just has to run it's course.  Drinking a lot of fluids might help.

You still could be iron deficient even though you are taking supplements.  You should be getting labs at about 3 months out.  I would check the Potassium, Magnesium, and Iron levels (including Ferritin).  Low Calcium can cause restless leg too.

I had restless arms and legs for the first two weeks after surgery, but it has passed now that I'm 3 weeks out.  The only difference is that I'm now on mushy foods instead of liquids.  It was miserable, and each night I was up until at least 3:00 or 4:00AM.  I can't tell you how happy I am that it has now passed.

Magnesium has been known to help with insomnia.  I have chronic insomnia, sometimes will get 2-3 hours  of sleep in 48 hours.  It has helped.  Talk to your doc first though.

I used to work midnights in a sleed disorder clinics, and here are the guidelines that we used to give:

- no caffiene at least 6 hours before bedtime

-use your bedroom only for sleeping (no tv, reading, etc)

-darken the room, get rid of all the light

-run a fan or some type of white noise

-do not exercise right before bed/late evening

-do not sleep in... if tired, instead go to bed earlier

-no naps

-keep a consitent bedtime

On a more personal note, I found that when I take lithium orotate (a nutrtion supplement) I sleep fantastic. I get it on Amazon.
