I had no idea. I was researching almonds due to my new love of making milk, and found out that most brands are treated with a gas that is a known carcinogyn. Yep, my Kirkland ones are. Here is an article that reviews which brands are Ok, and not if you you are intersted.

Yet another good reason to avoid commercial milks of any kind. And I'll do that as soon as I finish my current chai craze!

  • well phooey,I was also using the Kirkland brand but will now switch to Trader Joes. reckon soaking and discarding the soak water helps at all? I soak mine in filtered water and use filtered water to make the  milk.

I think the risk of salmonella is a larger concern than a possible carcinogen.  just because it's a chemical doesn't mean its going to hurt you ... this is 100-1000 times lower than a dangerous dose of the chemical.

I agree. But, if I am understanding it correctly, there is a steam method that accomplishes the needed goal without dousing with chemicals. If both choices are safe, then I will elect the non-gassed option. If my only choice was the gas option versus risking salmonella, than that would then change things.
