To those who have lost 100 lbs or more....or anyone!

Hello. I am halfway through this process, I will be eligible for surgery in mid January. I need to lose 150 lbs to be at my ideal weight. Is it normal at this point to doubt whether I can do this or not? How do you change 20+ years of bad eating habits? Does me doubting myself mean I'm not ready for this? I have already made some changes (e.g. started exercising, stopped eating fast food) but I've never lost more than 30 lbs at one time. I also lack a strong support system. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi!

I started this process back in February, and was scheduled for surgery today. We delyed it until Wednesday due to my blood work..

I had about 150 to lose, and with the help of my nutrition classes learned how to eat better. As of today I lost 75 lbs. pre-op...which was my goal.

I think we all share the same thoughts of whether we can change. I am in my late 50's and doubted I could. I also never lost weight bc I could not maintain a diet for more than 4 or 5 days.

My 1st move was stopping fast food and using my fitnesspal after everything I ate. I learned how to shuffle my foods so I could still eat what I wanted, but protein was protein first and at every meal. If I had salad I had to add chicken or even bacon, and eat them first.

I think most of us learned cabs cause cravings so I worked on reducing them.

I did everything in stages...not all at once.

You've taken some good 1st steps.

Keep coming back and talking. Great support here!

Kathy

I think it is very common to have doubts. So many of us have failed on so many diets. Its hard to believe this will work. When I started the process, I was at 385 pounds, and I would have been happy just to be under 300 pounds again. I never thought I'd get below 200 pounds. I'd see other people posting that they reached one-derland, and I'd think. "I'll never get there." But I did.

I lost 98% of my excess body weight. The weight loss surgery really changes our bodies. It wasn't easy. It takes determination, and following the rules, but it is possible. I'm now 160 pounds. I have a normal BMI. I've been maintaining for over a year. Its not easy but its possible. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Best of luck,

Carol

I am looking at having surgery sometime in January also. I have the same concerns. Will I be hungry all the time and will I be able to be organized enough to take all of the new vitamins and plan out meals. Surgery is my last resort, so nothing scares me more than not being successful. How will I go weeks pre op on clear liquids? Wont I be starving? I have to see the nutritionist a few more times before insurance will cover. Im hoping she will help me with my concerns. Its so scary.

Yes, you need to go to all your presurgical appointments and they will help shed some light on your questions. I can only go by what I experience and so far I am not hungry ...well I am in my head sometimes but I just sip my protein shake and it goes away fast. I don't think you will ever feel starving if you follow your diet. It is scary but the more you know the less scary it gets. I am more afraid of the unknown than things I understand.
