Mine have pretty much disappeared, and I never used anything. I can barely tell where one incision was, but the others are invisible.

I think time is the only thing that will make a difference.

At a year post op, there is not much you can do. Mine seemed dark to me at a year out, but by 2 years out they were practically invisible. Now, I have to hunt for the scars. I can't even see them in the mirror. I did nothing topically to help the scars heal. Just keep them out of the sun.

Mine faded quite a bit by the year-and-a-half mark. I have scars from lap gallbladder surgery several years before my VSG, and they were completely faded at about 3 years out.

If you're self-conscious about them, you can use something like Mederma cream, or silicone sheets meant for scar treatment. I used the cream on a few acne scars on my face, and I did notice a bit of a change after 6 months or so.

sometimes we don't heal as well as others and got dark scars.. or too large scars. in some situations taht can be addressed and helped by a doc.. I think dermatologist may help if your scars are really abnormal. you may ask your PCP to look at them next time you see him/her.
