Prilosec

Hi everyone:

I need some help here. I went to my surgeon today and he asked if I was taking the Prilosec. Well, since he forgot to tell me about it and didn't give me prescription as he thought he did - the answer was "no". I asked why I needed to take it. I've never had acid reflux or heart burn etc.He said because it helps the stomach to heal. He wants me on it for 3 months.

I feel fine and everything is going well. Do I really need to take it?

Doctor's orders right? I would take it. You can't feel if your stomach is healing or if it's not. 

I would. I also want to share that when I have acid issues post vsg, it is the "silent" variety most all the time. In other words, no burning or other typcial symptoms of my former GERD status prevsg. My biggest indicator now? If I feel hungry. Acid mimics hunger. Hunger makes me eat, which comes back again maybe an hour or so later. That is the acid talking, and it also can make it difficult to lose weight due to dealing with the psuedo hunger thing. So yes, take it for now.

I agree, take the meds. The decision your surgeon made to place you on this medication is based on prior research that shows that this medicine can serve as a protective factor for your stomach. As we all know sometimes things can feel fine although they certainly aren't inside of us. It's only a short time. I would give it a shot and ensure the most healthy recovery that you can possibly have.

Yup, you should.  

I've been taking mine.  They told me it was preventative, so I am going with that.  It isn't going to hurt me any, and it is probably helping.  I figure in a few months I am going to see about going off of it, but by then I will be at least six months post op.  

I never had acid issues before surgery, but my surgeon sends his patients home with a prescription for omeprazole. I started mine in the hospital the morning after surgery and still take it. I would do what the doctor says.

Yes , it reduces the acid which will help the incision line in your stomach heal.

Man, wish I didnt need it. My surgeon gave it to me for 6 months post op and then was supposed to stop (didnt ask the reasoning for it, just assumed to help with acid). Once stopping, after a month or so I started getting heart burn daily.. Lots of tums.

Finally I emailed my PA at my surgeons office and asked him to call in a new script for me... said he doesnt want me to be on it forever, not sure the options lol

I stopped using my Dexilant for a few days and found I needed it.  I will stick with it for at least 6 months.  I was eating tums and zantac and baking soda prior to surgery.  I am hoping as I lose weight it will decreaase alot and go away.
