I will be 7 weeks out on Friday and was curious to know about how many grams of carbs and fats I should be getting? I know I'm supposed to get 800-900 calories and 80g or more of protein but the nutritionist didn't focus much on fats or carbs. She gave me a sample menu and was more focused on protein and calories.

Hi Missy!

My surgeon's instructions were to stay around 20 to 25 net carbs.  She didn't give me instruction on fat.  I think if you are managing your calories, carbs and protein, that's good enough! :-)  I ate healthy fats like coconut oil to sautee my food in and I ate full fat dairy.  I didn't pay attention to my fat much because watching the other macros, I feel like the fat just fell in line especially if you are eating the healthy foods for you and not introducing junk or processed stuff.

600 to 800 calories at 7 weeks. 80 grams of protein. Carbs as close to nothing as possible. If you do those things, ignore fat.

Depending on how you are losing, you can adjust your calories a little lower, but don't go above 900.  Carbs, focus on non starchy veggies that you are cleared to eat and stay away completely from any simple carbs.  They will only hinder weight loss.    You can adjust your macros based on how much weight you are losing weekly and where you need to be.   Be sure to log everything you eat, so you can keep track of what works best for you in regards to losing.

Good luck!

People have different tolerances for carbs, but for me, I needed to keep my carbs really low or I start craving sweets.  It becomes a vicious cycle and ends with me gaining weight.  So I keep my carbs below 25 grams per day.  Then I allow occasional treats when I'm around goal weight.

In terms of fat, if you watch calories, the fats will work out ok.

best wishes,

Carol

I pretty much ignored both - if your protein and calories are in line both will be very low. Many go excessively low on carbs because that's "in" today while twenty years ago everyone was doing overly low fat and they did just as well. Unless you have specific comorbidities that call for a more specific diet, concentrate on getting the best nutrition that you can from the non-protein part of your diet and things will be a lot easier long term. Quality of the food is a lot more important than some arbitrary carb or fat count - some go to great accounting lengths (frankenfoods, "zero carb" carbs, etc.)  just to post a low number but end up worse off than those who looked to the long term.
