I have never wanted to pee so badly...

Tuesday's surgery was a resounding success. Even the surgeon and his fellows all seemed super pleased. I had a few things that could have complicated the surgery but none of them happened.

But do you think I could relax that damned little sphincter? I've had problems before due to the fact I live with Multiple Sclerosis but hadn't even considered this a specific challenge for the surgery.

I ended up being catheterized three times (twice were "in and outs") and the third was a foley. Finally I told them to stop, when my bladder was full enough it would create the pressure I need to be able to let go... hours passed... more IV fluids, at least 4L of IV fluids since this all began, plus whatever I managed to drink... finally 20 hrs later I did it! I managed to squeeze out a couple hundred milliliters and I celebrated. It was 4:15am. It seems so strange now, but you try spending 20 out of every 90 minutes sitting on a toilet trying to talk yourself into letting it go!

My first post-op non-scale victory was peeing... they couldn't release me from hospital until I had, so I got an extra day!

FYI: anesthesia and pain medication affects me like that all the time. Docs would tell me that I should be peeing within a couple of hours after walking up from a survey ' but for me it would be 8-10 hours. It often takes that long for that part of my body to be awaken after any anesthesia. Much longer than for other people. Even pain pills do that to me. Not as much as anesthesia, but still enough for me to notice.

I had never had surgery before, so I had never heard of this side effect to anesthesia. Imagine my surprise when I couldn't go either! It was so weird - I didn't feel like I had to and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't...until they did a bladder ultrasound and threatened me with a catheter because it was so full and then with a lot of effort I did. It was a week before I got back any sense of urgency.

More people should mention it to anesthesia newbies, I think!

I am almost weeks post revision, and I had a time with it in the hospital also and it is still sort of affecting me. It has really slowed down my urine flow I hope it goes away soon it's driving me nuts !
