happy saturday, folks! i've just been sleeved on 6.14.17. day 3 post-op over here. would like to bounce a few things off of you more experienced sleevers:

1. did you guys deal with burping pretty much after every. single. sip. of protein shake? even my water makes me burp these little annoying liquidy burps. i am taking prilosec (today is 2nd day on that) and also was prescribed cafetate (i think that's what it's called) to coat the esophagus and stomach. know i'd feel so much better to get this gas out but the liquid burps ain't so great. please tell me this gets better?

2. any tips for making the bariatric advantage shakes less sweet? holy smokes, those things are just too sweet. the best one so far for me is the iced latte, but i am sure i'll even grow tired of that after a week straight. i've just ordered the unjury chicken soup protein mix and am looking forward to something savory. but i'll take any tips you've got.

lastly, if there anyone that's been sleeved in june, would love to connect and offer some support. i know this was the right decision, but this week is going to be tough.

Welcome!

it sounds like you're inhaling too much air when you drink. Try drinking with a straw - for some people, straws can help a lot with the air swallowing.

I've never been a lover of super sweet drinks. I use optimum nutrition double rich chocolate as my go to shake because it seems like a darker chocolate to me and therefore less sweet. Someone suggested adding unsweetened cocoa powder to shakes which I thought was a brilliant idea as well although I've never tried it.

thanks for the tip on the optimum rich chocolate; sounds like it might not be quite as sugary sweet as some others. feel like i'll have a little more play in the shakes after week one by adding some pureed fruit, PB2 powder, etc. just trying to do strictly shakes this week and let my stomach rest a bit.

Adding fruit to your shakes is not a wise option regardless of how much time has passed. Puréed fruit = pure sugar and will not do anything for your weight loss.

correct. although from what i understand there is a big difference from processed added sugars and natural sugars. even something with natural sugar would never be more important than protein intake. on a related note, it's so interesting reading all the comments on here. it seems every practice has a different set of rules.

Early in, there's really no difference. Don't add fruit, it's really worthless and you don't have a lot of room to play with. I'm 5 months out and I still only eat fruit very rarely and then only berries in super small quantities.

PB2 is a good option to add. I add it to my yogurt every morning because I like how it thickens it up and adds 4g of protein.

Sugar is sugar is sugar. There's no reason to add it back into your diet.

hi gwen,

while i agree with you about keeping any kind of sugar in check for WLS patients, i disagree that sugar is sugar is sugar. pretty sure i have never heard of anyone complaining about how they got fat off of apples. in my opinion, there is absolutely a difference between refined, added sugars and naturally occurring sugars. i am sure we can both find evidence to support our opinions - but in my experience, personally, i know my body feels very differently when i eat a banana vs. a cupcake.

Stick around :) There are always people who stop by and say that they only eat healthy food and fruit yet became SMO. I admit there's no way I could become SMO on apples because of my fructose issue - I'd be spending all day on the toilet! Apple only diet would ROCK for my weight loss.

Personally, I agree that there are differences in how our bodies react to sugar and I care more about avoiding refined and processed sugars than I do about avoiding naturally occurring sugars. But, at the end of the day, a gram of carbs is 4 calories and the body turns sugar to glucose and glucose is used to power cells, etc.

When it comes to weight loss, sugar is sugar is sugar though. And it's best to avoid all of it. As you say in your first line.

I think we're saying the same thing here. :)

I've got fructose malabsorption (wiki has the best description) so I get to experience first hand how different sugars are different. It sucks a lot :P

At any rate.. I hope you're doing better now than you were when you first made the original post here.

yes! i think we are saying the same thing. i don't plan on making fast friends with any sugar if i can avoid it. thanks for asking about progress. i am day 9 post-op and feeling pretty good, actually. the ONLY thing that is bothersome is some gas pain/inability to burp right after a meal. i am doing everything by the book (chewing, portion, etc) but i get this uncomfortable sensation of pressure in my esophagus, like i need to burp, but when i try, it's pretty non-productive. i will add that i had a very small hiatal hernia repair at the same time as VSG, so it could just be healing from that. i did not suffer from reflux issues before surgery, so am really hoping i'm not one of those sleevers who develop GERD. have mercy!

have a great weekend and enjoy your success today.
