Protein Pointers Needed

I am searching for some fellow VSG forum members to assist me w/ ideas for protein intake. I am very familiar w/ the Premier Protein Shakes but since my surgery 6/28/2017 these shakes have become excessively sweet to me. I don't know what happened to my taste buds. I am fearful I am not getting my required 60-80 grams daily and I am looking for other resources or even tips/recipes

-Sincerely your fellow VSG

I couldn't barley stand them for a while after surgery either. It helped to put them over a lot of ice to water them down a bit. Also I found that Kroger has a milk line called carb master that is very high in protein. I often opted for that instead of protein shakes for a while.

There are savory options/neutral options you could try. Unjury makes a chicken broth protein powder and also an "unflavored" protein powder. These are both good for adding to things like actual chicken broth, ricotta, yogurt, etc. There's also Fairlife milk which is higher in protein.

I used the carbmaster milk and the unjury chicken broth mentioned above. Both really good options. I made pudding out of dry protein powder, PB2, and carbmaster milk. It was actually quite good and not near as sweet as some of the normal options. I also found boxed bone broth that was pretty high in protein.

Like others have mentioned Unjury offers ( in my opinion) the best protein options while pre and immediately post op. I switched to premier protein as I advanced in my post op phase.

I enjoyed adding the unjury ( chicken broth and unflavored) protein powder to low sodium cream soups and I would drink them out of a coffee mug. Very soothing to my sleeve and I was getting my protein.

Are you just looking for shakes or are you on full foods now?

  • Cottage cheese
  • Greek yogurt
  • refried beans w/ cheese & taco sauce & sour cream
  • chicken
  • beef
  • pork
  • shrimp

My first "meal" post surgery was pureed Boston market meatloaf w/ spinach. It looked disgusting but I was SO sick of sweet. Get some savory into your life!

Stacey, I am on full foods now but really no desire to eat because it leaves me feeling uncomfortable. Do you utilize any websites for ideas or etc.?

Uncomfortable like that I'm super full feeling? Are you weighing your food? if not you should I'll help! After a while you know when you're one or two bites away for that "uncomfortable ", you'll just have to train yourself to stop and not eat that last bite.
