Realistic weight loss expectations

Lost significantly 1st week, trying to wrap my mind around realistic weekly weight loss expectation. I know everyone's body is different, just looking for "in general" #s. I lost 4 lbs this week, & was strangely disappointed. Getting in approx 9-12 cups of fluid, all my protein, & walking.

HiJourneybound

congratulations on your journey. I am just about 4 months into this new adventure. I think the veterans on this forum would probably tell you there is no "normal". Everyone loses differently and at different paces. I have found it very helpful to look at the notes on the bottom of the posts (M1, M2,etc.) as this gives you the pace for some people. However you can't necessarily compare as your start weight, body type, etc are different.

Just continue to follow your doctors diet, track everything you eat and have patience. I am struggling with the patience part as well. I have lost 48 lbs to date but only one pound per week for the last three weeks. Very frustrating. But I know if I hadn't had this surgery I would be gaining more than a pound a week.

Good luck and keep going. It will work for you!

I like what Agran wrote. Our bodies are all different and so are weight loss patterns. You can look at what others have done and calculate averages and means and such ad infinitum. But your body is going to do what it's going to do and it's best (and easiest) to just stand back and let it.

Try to look at things in the aggregate. If someone loses ten pounds per month they will likely feel they are a "slow loser". But that's 120 pounds in a year! See what I mean?

All of the numbers are fascinating, especially early out. You can go right down the rabbit hole just by googling "average monthly weight loss after weight loss surgery". If you want to spend time thinking on all of that certainly you should go for it. Stuff like that can be fascinating. Just make sure you don't start comparing and beating yourself up.

When I first started...3 years ago this Friday...one of the vets (Gwen) was a huge advocate of TrendWeight.com. It was a very helpful...and encouraging...website (and free). Even when I didn't lose like I thought I should, or as much as I thought everyone else was, it gave me a realistic expectation of results. I also found it to be incredibly accurate (assuming that I did exactly what I was supposed to be doing!)

Congrats on your journey...beware the three week stall...coming to a scale near you soon!! Best of luck!

Go to the OH Post-Op Planner and input your stats to get an idea of what your loss might look like. Mine was pretty accurate.

The Post-op planner was right on target for me.

The post-op planner wasn't too accurate for me.

I had periodic plateaus and it was not a straight line.

Post op planner thought I should've lost 40+ pounds the first month because I was a heavyweight. I lost 11.

Stay focused, for me I kept making small goals and keep pushing forward.

Realistically ... 60% - 80% of your excess weight. That's the average. Yes, some people lose ALL their extra weight and some people hardly lose anything. I'm about 7 months out and I've almost lost half of the extra pounds. I'm right on track for hitting the 75% mark by the time my surgiversary rolls around, and I'm ok with that. While I would LOVE to get to my goal weight I would be more than satisfied to just be in onederland.

If you fall down you just have to get back up.

I was a slow loser. I was behind my cohort for at least the first six months, if not eight. But I kept up my slow & steady pace and blew every last one of them out of water. I lost over 230 lbs. Please don't get wrapped up in this and compare yourself to others. Like the other posters have said, people lose at all different rates for all different reasons. Just keep your nose to the grindstone.

P.S. I lost 16 lbs the first month, and I weighed over 300 lbs.
