Hi! I had my surgery on Tuesday and was wondering if I'm eating too many times or is this ok. I've tried to east after every 2 hours. So far it has been like this:

M1: natural yogurt with proteinpowder 50gr

M2: natural yogurt with proteinpowder 50gr

M3: natural yogurt with proteinpowder 50gr

M4: broth 100ml

M5: natural yogurt 80ml

M6: yet to come or should I leave it..

Have drinked alot of water too between meals and some herbal tea.

Is it too much or is it ok?

It's hard to say since you're on liquids I'm guessing? I don't know what natural yogurt is. I just drank protein shakes. I could barely get what I needed in, I maybe got 30g of protein from one of my shakes down for awhile. As long as you are not making yourself sick and trying to get your protein in, it should be okay. Did your surgeon give you information on how you should be eating after surgery?

Do you not have guidelines provided by your surgeon/program? If so, just follow what they say. If not, then the aim is to reach your required protein and fluid goals. Most important, however, is to ensure you are getting a minimum of 64oz (or 2 liters) of fluid in every day. Fluid is number 1, then protein. This early out, the danger of dehydration is high, so getting your fluid in should be your priority. Then, eat as often as you are comfortable in order to meet your protein goals.

Later on when you are eating solid foods, the number of meals will be more important, and we all have differing guidelines for that. Mine was 3 meals a day, no snacks. Others have multiple meals and snacks, so that all depends on what your surgeon/nutritionist/program guidelines are. There is a lot of good information here, but my advice is to stick with your program guidelines until at least 3 or 4 months post op. Then, when you are on your own and making your own decisions about how and when you eat, you can make changes to what works best for you.

Best of luck, and welcome to the Loser's Bench!! :)

I was on liquids only at 4 days post op and I usually had 2 protein shakes, a popsicle, and a jello, and maybe some broth per day. Each surgical team has different requirements so I would place a call to your nutritionist.

When I was in my first two weeks post-op, I was only allowed liquids. And there were no meal times - it was just drinking protein shakes and other liquids all day. Sipping all day.

I am always amazed at the differences in the different programs. Fluids are your first priority this soon out of surgery. My practice wanted me eating 5-6 meals a day. I am 14 months out, and I still follow this. If I miss a meal, which occasionally happens, I am not only ravenous, I am somewhat snippy. Somewhat might be an understatement.

In any case, I eat about five meals a day. Sometimes it is six, depending on cir****tances. The bottom line is calories, protein, and whether or not you are losing weight. I am down 207 lbs and doing very well. That's my bonafides.

I ate every two to three hours post op. I actually eat every two - three hours now at nearly 8 years out.
