Morning, VSGers! We're supposed to be moving into some days in the high 40's and I'm looking forward to it! Even if it's rainy and a melty mess! I went to my first Bariatric Support group meeting last night and it was nice. I think my pre-op friend got more from it than I did, but that's completely fine. I won't be able to go again until at least March.

QOTD: My friend and I were talking about our childhoods on the way to the support group meeting. What kind of parents did you have? Were they strict or pretty lax? Mine were strict and my mother was a fundamental Christian, which presented its own problems. My mother died when my sister was 14 and she grew up with much more lax parenting from my father. I don't feel like she turned out any worse without someone breathing down her neck all the time.

Good morning. It is supposed to be warm in Florida again today (80), so maybe I'll make it into the pool today.

QOTD: Interesting question... My parents were probably normal strict - we had chores, but we were responsible on our own to get homework done. My father died when I was 12, my oldest brother died 2 years later and my mother became an alcoholic as a result. All of that definitely had a profound effect on me, making me very independent, having a strong need for control, and being little OCD about things being in order and getting done. My brother was almost 5 years younger and he was affected differently either because he was exposed to dysfunction longer or because he has a different personality. He doesn't remember the more structured years before my father died. He tends to avoid conflict at all costs and is not good about managing money. He never finished college, though he has an extremely high IQ and works as an engineer (and has made a good salary).

1 year, 9 months post-op

B: eggs, cottage cheese and Canadian bacon

L: tuna salad, pickles and cottage cheese

D: ? (Going to a wine and cheese reception for an artist friend, so maybe cheese?)

S: Nut thins and hummus

Good morning all! So this morning, I turned off the heat and turned on the air conditioner. It was 78 in the house and it is damp and muggy outside so opening the doors was not an option. I know it's not much to complain about, but we all have our crosses to bear... Later this week should be sunny and dry and beautiful so it will be open door weather for sure! So, I guess I don't really have anything to complain about. LOL

QOTD: My father was an a$$ and just plain mean. My mother tried to compensate for his cruelty, but didn't quite make it. I "disowned" him when I was sixteen and moved out at eighteen and never looked back. I was a "perfect" child to avoid the belt, but underneath ran a current of self destructive behavior that became full blown when I moved out on my own. I trashed a fully paid four year scholarship in my bid for freedom and have regretted it ever since. But, it made me who I am and I like who I am now so, as they say, everything happens for a reason. Learn and move on.

M1: Coffee, miralax, PP chocolate

M2: Fage w/ SF jello?

M3: PP Protein Shake

M4: LC cheese wedge and beefy chili with black eyed peas

M5: TBD - cleaning out the refrigerator this morning. If there is nothing left to make something, I'll probably sous vide chicken breast.

S: Jerky

E: Nothing formal.

Water/Vits: on track.

QOTD: I grew up with my mom. She was a very sweet, kind, loving woman. She always supported us kids in anything we wanted to do. My father wasn't around much and didn't live near us. My household was neither super strict nor super lax. We were definitely raised to be very independent and our mom had a lot of trust in us.

Breakfast: Egg whites cups, skinny latte

Lunch: Sweet potato chili and pears

Dinner: Baked chicken and roasted brussels sprouts

Exercise: circuit workout

Good morning!

QOTD: Well. This is a question. My mother has been an alcoholic since her late teens. Her dementia is actually caused by liver disease/encephalopathy from heavy drinking. My father was 20 years older than my mom (29/49) when I was born, so he was already tired before my siblings were born. I didn't have any rules or chores, but I made straight A's, got a job when I was 14, and cooked for the family pretty regularly. I came out when I was about 13 and it was fine. I could stay out as late as I wanted and do what I wanted; I was an old soul and never got caught doing anything. Dad died from a heart attack when I was 15 and my mom got sober for a few years and acted like a parent. She ended up falling off the wagon (the rest is history,) so I did the best I could to halfway raise my younger siblings (who still live with me, haha) while finishing college. They are 20 and 23 and both have jobs, so I don't count myself a failure, yet!

B: premier chocolate, decaf coffee

L: 2 turkey meatballs and a couple spoonfuls of stewed tomatoes

D: Curried tilapia with an ounce of squash

Snacks: babybel cheese/ounce of low-fat cheddar, protein soup probably

Phoenix got rain last night. Still cloudy and sprinkling today and high will be 59. I am wearing a heavy sweater today since it's probably the last cold day of the year for us.

QOTD: My parents were a dysfunctional mess. My dad had undiagnosed mental issues, was verbally and physically abusive and both of my parents became alcoholics when I was in middle school. I had a lot of rules on and off, but my sister had none (she was 4 years younger). Our childhood was very stressful and my dad's drinking escalated and the weekends would be a mess of him drinking and yelling and acting erratic. As soon as I was old enough I spent very little time at home. My dad committed suicide in 2002 and my mom now lives with me and has since his death. It's very hard to deal with as he left her with no money, they weren't legally marries so she cannot collect his social security, and we fully support her financially. I have a lot of unresolved anger that I hope to deal with in therapy this year. My mom is now also sick with a lung disease, but refuses to seek medical care. Yes, it's a mess and probably more than you wanted to know. :)

Taking care of parents is incredibly difficult. They are often more expensive than children and can take up significantly more time!! Don't feel like you overshared, it was the QOTD, after all.

We fought for 5 years to get my mom disability, and she finally got it last year. It was such a burden off mine and DW's shoulders. I couldn't have gotten through it without support, for sure.

If she gets that disease diagnosed, maybe she can collect disability and financially support herself again! Something to think about!

It's an option but right now she is 66 and doesn't have enough work credits to qualify for SS. I had read that disability also requires a minimum credits but maybe you can get around that. She won't ever be able to work again.

Our lawyer got us around that, actually. One of the stipulations is that you can be a widow of a spouse who had enough work credits as long as your disability happened within a certain number of years following their death. At least, that was the laymen's terms that he told ME.

Good Morning All - Final day in the office before my operation. So much to still do and organise but will get there. Dropped my car off last night which was sad. Seems silly to get attached to a car huh. I am driving the car my ex husband and I bought for our sons to learn it. Its old but gets me from A to B. I wont be able to drive for a little while anyway as my hand and wrist will be in a splint after the operation

QOTD: I was brought up in a strict household. My father was quite strict - the do as I say with no explanation type. They both worked incrediably hard to provide an amazing life for my sister and I. Mum always had more of an idea of what we were doing growing up. Lost my sister in 2007 and my father in 2008 so that has brought mum and I even closer.
