Weight loss stall almost 3 months after surgery. What am I doing wrong ?

Hello again,

After the struggle of deep depression and regret immediately after surgery, I have been able to bounce back slowly to being and feeling like myself again. Thanks to all the help and support from this forum and family/friends.

Now I'm almost 3 months out from my surgery (OR date was 10/20/2017) and I have found myself in a complete stop ð??'. It's been 6 going on 7 weeks and I haven't dropped a single pound!!

I don't want to get discouraged despite doing everything im supposed to be doing.

1. eating healthy (1,000-1,300 calories a day)
2. Premier shakes 1-2 a day
3. Vitamins (bariatric advantage, calcium, iron, b complex)
4. Exercise at least 30 mins daily
5. Try to drink 64oz of H2O a day
6. Stay away from sweets
7. Drink low calorie/ sugar free drinks.

What am I doing wrong? Anyone else go through this so early on post Surg ?

I feel like I'm not going to get over this and won't get to my goal weight. :'(

The one positive thing I've noticed is that despite not loosing weight I've lost inches off my waist. Which I'm happy for but still don't understand the stall in weight loss.

I'd have to say at that many calories, your body is in maintenance mode. Most people stick to 600-800 calories max when losing, and don't go up to what your taking in until they are ready for maintenance.

My advice is to cut back on your calories and you should start losing again. Good luck!

Totally makes sense! Thank you for the advise. I also just reviewed the paperwork I got from the classes last year prior to surgery and it says at my current stage (or phase 6) I should be between 600-900 calories a day.

Good of thing I kept all the packets. :)

In addition to your calories being high as Cathy mentions, if you're "trying" to drink 64oz a day, does that mean that you're not?

What, exactly, are you eating each day? Give us a sample meal plan and we can troubleshoot.

Hi Gwen!

Some days it's not as easy to drink all 64oz of water for me. I'll get 50 oz and drink a protelittle n shake and that's pretty much it. But then on the days I really try to focus on the water intake I get in the 64oz. It has a lot to do with how I'm feeling that particular day.

So for example yesterday my daily food ldrink oles like this.

Breakfast: Kirkland fat free strawberry berry yogurt (13g of protein) with 1/4 cup of hidden valley granola.

Snack: caramel premier protein shake

lunch : grilled skinless chicken 2oz (6g protein)

1 cup of organic unflavored soy milk (8g protein)

1 small almond biscotti (1.7g protein)

dinner: 1/2 Old Wisconsin turkey stick turkey sausage (4.5g protein)

1/4 Kirkland organic hummus (1.3gprotein)

12 baby carrots

ground chicken taco meat no tortilla (7g protein)

Total calories :921

6 cups of water all day

45min brisk walk and 20 min run

this is after me making the calorie adjustment from 1,000-1,300 to 700-900.

Let me know what you think. :)

Sadly, hydration can't wait until you're feeling up to it. :/ Although, it doesn't need to be water. Liquid is liquid. Protein shakes count toward your goal, as does Crystal Light, or unsweet tea.. whatever your body prefers as long as it's calorie free (or a protein shake/meal).

So, what are you doing wrong - definitely nix the granola, biscotti, and the carrots. There's no reason to be introducing non-protein centered foods to your diet right now. The only dense protein I see on here is the chicken, sausage, and ground chicken. Those are the sorts of foods you want to emphasize in your diet because they'll help you to feel sated for longer.

At this point, you should be getting your protein from food - especially if eating 1,000 - 1,300 calories. Seeing a typical day's meal would help us take a look.

You also mention staying away from sweets, but are you also staying away from any/all carbs?

Lastly, I would recommend totally ditching any low-calorie or sugar-free drinks. There have been many studies linking artificial sweeteners to increased appetite. And low calorie drinks? Those should also be a no-no unless we're talking like coffee or tea.

I'm not even 2 months post surg and hit a "plateau". I'm keeping my diet very light and still, not losing.

The stall for me is probably due to physical therapy and adding muscle to my legs and lower back. I've been going 3 times a week for an hour. It may not seem like much, but it did ramp up my activity level and muscle weighs more than fat.

Another item for me is that now I'm drinking about 48-60 oz of water and low cal/SF drinks a day. Immediately after surgery, I was lucky to hit that amount.

So, do I know what is doing the stall...NO, but I will not panic. I will wait it out and see what happens.

I'm a week past 3 months out, and a high calorie day for me is 750-800, with most days more around 700. I cannot eat a lot at a time, and since my dr said not to "snack" but eat meals, its pretty slow going.

I have had a couple of minor stalls (for 1-3 days) in the 3 months.

I do NOT do any type of diet drinks. Water, or decaf tea/coffee with Premier Protein used as "creamer".

Protein 50-60 grams, carbs about the same, and fats 18-20.

I see dietician again.

We are all different, but the comment about maintenance calories sounds right to me.
