Allergic reaction to staples inside?

Hello--

I was wondering if anyone here has ever had an allergic reaction to the staples used on your stomach inside after surgery. Whether it be years later, or right after? I'm allergic to nickel, and my mother has placed a fear in me that I will have an allergic reaction to the staples, and it can cause me to get sepsis and die...or that I will get really sick and my stomach leak, etc.

If anyone has a nickel allergy and had the VSG surgery and would like to share, either good or had a reaction, I would greatly appreciate it!

TIA!

[Edit: I did call my surgeon this morning and asked if there was any testing that could be done prior to the surgery, and was told that they've never heard of anyone having any allergies or problems with the staples used...so I just thought I would reach out to see if there's any others that may or may not have had issues with the staples.

This is something you really should talk to your surgeon about. Make him aware of any and all allergies.

I actually did call the office and asked if there was testing that could be done, and they told me that they?ve never heard of anyone having any problems.

Since that?s the answer that I was given, I figured I would reach out to see if anyone has any personal experiences...

I think the staples are made of surgical grade stainless steel so there is no nickle in the staples.

Surgical staples are normally made of titianium for internal use because the human body does not react to that. I know you spoke to the surgeon already but you can ask what they are made of to be sure that you have no issues.

Staples can be made of different materials. Some are titanium. Stainless steel staples DO have nickel as part of the alloy, but they are formulated to reduce possibility of metal allergies.

Your surgeon should know more details.

You can always insist that you be stitched up instead of stapled.

That's true. I will have to ask... I hope it can still be done laparoscopically! I did have a csection before though... I'm actually wondering if staples were used for that now that I'm thinking about it...

Even if not, an open procedure isn't that big of a deal. My DS was open and my incision was healed in 2 weeks.

I've also got a nickel allergy and have had zero issues. Is your mom trying to talk you out of the surgery and using this as a way to do that?
