Topic: RE: Does anyone else have a problem finding food they want to eat
I'm 8 months out and in general don't have much interest in food, or else I think I want something, get it, take a couple of bites and I'm over it.  I did that about hot dogs recently. Kept thinking about them so I finally got a low fat one and put it on a piece of toasted bread as the bun and added mustard and relish.  It tasted good but I only needed two bites and I was done.  I have been quite fortunate in that I have not thrown up anything I have tried although from time to time my belly will feel slightly uncomfortable.

My sister had bypass almost 5 years ago and has not developed any secondary addictions unless you count golf and she has kept all her weight off.  I think you have to be very aware that these transfer addictions are possible and since most of us have addictive personalities....

Topic: RE: Looking for Low Carb High Protein meals (pre-made or frozen dinners)
I quite literally throw a package of frozen chicken in the crockpot and turn it on and let it go. No seasonings, no fuids, nothing.   That takes less time than microwaving a meal.  And it turns out incredibly moist.  The chicken in one package of breasts will last you ALL WEEK - probably lunches and dinner!.   You can then do whatever you want with it - throw a little BBQ sauce on it, chop it up for a little chicken salad, or heat it up and add a little salsa.  I'm far enough out that I can enjoy salads again and so of course it goes on salad. Keep buying the prepared stuff for your hubby so you don't have to cook.  Also, someone posted a long time ago how to make parmesean tuna burgers.   They are one of my favorites.  I cook up two large cans on the weekend and they last me all week.  Love them with a little reduced fat honey mustard dressing.

I'm 5'8" and I am shooting for 160 lbs, but if I keep lifting heavy weights I think I would look just fine at 180.

Topic: RE: Sleeve diet ?!?!
I was on pureed only for the first 30 days.  I ate soups with added protein powder, cottage cheese, pureed Wendy's chili, refried beans with melted cheest and plain greek yogurt as the "sour cream", any kind of yogurt I could get down, the Ricotta bake (Put in the OH search bar),  Unjury chicken broth, protein shakes of course. I think I had applesauce and mashed potatoes once or twice. My nut had me blenderize some of the high protein Progresso soups even though they had some pasta in them.

Topic: RE: Psych evaluation
I took a standarized true or false personality test on the computer (bunches of questions that ask mundane things like would you want to be a florist or a newspaper reporter and then the next question asks something along the lines of true or false...people are always talking about me. You get the idea.  I was also given a one page test of vocabulary words.  I think it was to try to gauge your intelligence to make sure you could understand information given to you about the surgery and postop instructions.  Then there was a brief sit-down with the psychologist. The one I saw is very familiar with WLS patients.  He asked about family support, my birth order in my siblings, marital status, general things like that. We talked about the importance of exercise for the rest of my life in spite of the surgery.  It was an okay experience. They don't really delve into anything about why you are heavy or why you are addicted to food.

Topic: RE: 6 wks post-op and NO ENERGY
I had some serious fatigue for the first 4 months.  I wasn't sleepy...in fact I stopped taking naps and preop I LOVED my naps.  I don't know what it was. I got my protein in. I drank my water.  It did get better.

Topic: RE: No Pre-Op Diet
My only preop diet was no food or drink after midnight the night before surgery, although on my own I cut back on the amount of food I ate about two days preop.  I made sure I had my food 'funerals" days before that, so I just ate light for two days.  I kept imagining that as they cut into my stomach a big old hamburger would pop out! (I know I know...weird).  Anyway, the lack of a preop diet did not make any difference to me postop to answer your question.  Good luck!!!!

Topic: RE: Surgery in 3 days and feeling overwhelmed
You will be just fine.  Just take it one day at a time and sometimes you just take it an hour at a time.  I too was sure that I would be the only one that didn't lose weight but amazingly it comes off when you stick to protein first once you get healed up and drink your fluids. We all failed so many times before that we can't help but have that mindset.  Wish I had done this in my 20's or 30's instead of my 50's!

Topic: RE: First Post
Hi and welcome. I also did the 6 month insurance preop program.  I too was a bit mad initially but also used the time well.  I think it helps a great deal. You can start practicing things like eating slower and not drinking with your meals.  Also a great time to start weighing and measuring food so that down the road you can be a good estimator when you eat out etc.   I would also recommend you try out different protein powders to see what you like. I just walked into a Vitamin Shoppe one day and told them I was going to have bariatric surgery and they taught me all kinds of things about protein powders. I ultimately ended up with Unjury off the net because I feel like they don't have a lot of stuff in them that I would be worried about.  Surgery day will be here before you know it!!

Topic: RE: FROM 241 LBS TO 203LBS SINCE 4/17/04
I'm six months out and average about 10 lbs a month , which is a lot less than some people and probably a lot more than others.  (not counting the first month postop which was just kinda crazy weird with lots of weight lost initially and then NOTHING for a couple weeks)  As long as the scale goes down, I am happy!  I too have a hard time not comparing myself to others who had surgery around the same time, but it sounds like you are doing JUST FINE!

Topic: RE: VSG and steroids....can anyone relate and tell me what to expect!
I am 6 months out and was put on a burst and taper of steroids about a month ago for another severe case of poison ivy. Sigh.  Anyway, when I have taken them preop they made me hungry, but postop I did not have that reaction, however, they did give me a mild stomach ache.  I wasn't doubled over in pain or anything but I was aware that my stomch didn't feel quite right. It went away as soon as I was done with the steroids.   PS:  Hope your wedding day is lovely! Congratuations and Best Wishes!

Topic: RE: Wendy's Chilli?
My NUT highly recommended it in the pureed stage....just like Happy said - put it in the blender first. I couldn't eat much of it at one time of course but it was tasty and a change from other things that seemed too bland on the pureed stage.

Topic: RE: I'm NOT Telling!!!

I find it quite freeing to talk about it openingly.  It gives me a feeling of "Hey I'm fat and I am doing something about it" inner strength.  Lots of people are interested in the details and I find most of my coworkers are excited and happy for me. The surgery is a really important part of my life now and I want to be open about it.  I feel like I hid away enough when I was the big girl in the room.  But in the end, you need to do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Topic: RE: OMG!!! The demon has returned!!! I'm scared!

I don't have any personal experience with sleep eating, but my ex's dad apparently used to do it all the time when the hubby was a teenager and he always made a SANDWICH too!  Wonder what the deal is with the sandwich making?  LOL  Wonder why we as humans don't grab something already made like cottage cheese or something?  He also said if he tried to wake his dad during this process he would get verbally nasty with him. Gosh, I hope you get this figured out. We all got enough trouble already trying to control our eating when we are awake.

Topic: RE: Chronic Exhaustion
It took me a good 4 months not to feel fatigued.  I take all my vitamins and they even drew some blood work early at one of my postop visits due to the fatigue but it looked good. I finally got over it but I still will have a day here and there where I am just beat for no obvious reason.

Topic: RE: Did anyone not have a hair problem??
I am almost six months out and have fairly long hair and have had no problems with hair loss. I am almost afraid to say that outloud as I don't want to jinx myself!  I do absolutely nothing different to it postop than I did preop. I go to bed with it wet and put hot curlers in it every morning.  I just got it colored last week.  I specifically asked my longtime hairdresser if he noticed any thinning and he did not.  I am just shy of 6 months out and have lost almost 90 lbs (69 postop).  Although protein is my priority and I too make sure I take my daily vitamins,  I probably eat a few more carbs  (berries, oatmeal, salads, mushrooms etc), thus a few more calories than most people on here. I wonder sometimes if maybe I didn't shock my system as much because of that but that is purely conjecture on my part and not intended as gospel.

Topic: RE: weight loss stall 1 1/2 weeks after surgery
I did the same thing. Its just the three week stall a little early. Please try very hard not to let it mess with your head....because it will if you let it.  Just stick to your plan and you will start to lose again. Your body is just readjusting itself.  You shocked the heck out of it.  This early delay is weight loss is quite common.

Those caught my eye on that list too. I meant to tell Kitsy thanks for posting.  I bet those are good without any syrup...maybe just a spray of I can't believe its not butter. Thanks for the stats.

Topic: RE: Considering VSG (gastric sleeve)
You are asking great questions.  Good for you for losing weight. I know how hard that is, as I have done it for a lifetime. I am much older than you and I wonder what I would have thought of this surgery as a 19 year old.   Many of us have posted that our one regret is that we didn't have the surgery earlier in life.  One of the things that swayed me toward the sleeve is that you keep your pyloric valve intact (bypass doesn't) and the sleeve frequently inhibits hunger pain although we all still have "head" hunger. One of the things that swayed me towards having surgery in general is the statistic that only 5% of the people that lose weight through diet and exercise maintain that loss.  I was not one of those 5%.

I am only a few months into this journey but I am happy with my success so far. Yes, I have excess skin but that can be taken care of surgically some day if I decide to do so.  Lots of people have become pregnant after the sleeve and do just fine. Many of them post on here.

I would suggest you just keep reading about all the surgeries, educate yourself, and then make a decision based on your knowlege and your place in life. I'm not sure who in your life is telling you its a bad idea but if you arm yourself with facts, you can educate them as to your decision.  If its your family, they might just be scared for you.  I would also suggest a bariatric therapist to help guide you.

Best of luck to you sweetie.

Topic: RE: New to the boards...getting sleeved in Aug...
Hello and welcome. I was also a lurker for a long time before I posted anything. Glad you jumped in with both feet!  I only had to have one sleep study and that was quite enough for me thank you, so I'm glad I didn't need a second one.  Always lots of hoops and of course breathing while you are sleeping is quite important!   August will be here before you know it! Best of luck to you.

Topic: RE: Looking for the "bad" of the sleeve (asked about good the other day)
I am 5 months out and have not had any problems with any type of meat.  I know a lot of people on here say to put "lube" of some type on our meat to have it go down easier and occasionally I do, but I can eat chicken or steak without any sauces etc. I have a coworker who has the band and she has a terrible time trying to eat meats with or without sauces.

I have not had any bad experiences directly related to the sleeve.  I have had a few bouts with constipation which is I why I break the cardinal rule of having carbs in the morning (package of weight control oatmeal).  Some tears and trying to self administer an enema (did you guys know there is sal****er in those things which burn like a mutha when you're already sore) one delightful day made me revert to the oatmeal.  I decided I didn't want to take a laxative every day.
