Topic: RE: Dizzy when standing at 10 months out

Yep, and for different reasons... I will list all of them here, but please know different reasons at different times.

1.  Vertigo (presurgery).  It was aweful, but I do not feel this was part of the issue post op.

2.  Early post op- due to low sugar.

3. Electrolytes.  Not from dehydration- fluids overall were always easy for me to get in.  Doc suggested Powerade Zero daily and it helped. Not fixed though.

4.  Low sodium.  This is the one that by far helped the most.  As soon as I increased my sodium the dizziness all but went away, unless the low blood sugar kicked in on me.  I take a supplement every so often.  edit*  I had low blood pressure, and the sodium helped raise it up to a more tolerable level.  Still no where near 120/80, but much better!

5.  For my husband:  when he lost weight the metformin and high blood pressure was doing it.  Once he stopped taking them he was fine.  He no longer needed them!

Topic: RE: One option to get your insurance to cover plastic surgery (breast)

Just thought I would throw this out there...

I am a cancer patient who carries the gene that makes it significantly more likely that I will develop breast cancer.  My mother died from this (breast, colon, liver cancer- they were never certain where it started), and my younger sister is currently fighting breast cancer- and she is only 40.  Consequently, I have decided to have a preventative double mastectomy.  It occurred to me, however, that the plastic surgery component may be of some interest to some here.

After my weight loss the girls have paid the price, but paying for extensive plastic surgery is too dear at the moment given multiple kids in college at the moment.  I just went to a consult on abdominoplasty, most of which the doc anticipates the insurance covering.  I should find out soon on that.  While there, I asked about the mastectomy- something that I have already decided to do but am working on figuring out the timing.  Given for some women they use belly fat to assist with the reconstruction I didn't want to eliminate options by getting abdominoplasty if it was applicable.  The doc said he doubted I even had enough fat to do an A cup, and that realistically implants would be the best option. Thus, I am going to proceed with this surgery first I think.

Today I called my insurance company and they initially said they would not cover the mastectomy, but after rattling off my risk factors they sent it to the auditor who said I would qualify easily due to the multiple factors I have going on. This includes reconstructive surgery.  Not sure ladies if you have ever checked out photos of what the finally product looks like, but it sure looks better than what I got going on right now.  And of course, I would have a 90% plus reduction in the likelihood of developing breast cancer- a near certainty for me IMHO if I do not get proactive about this.

I know that folks out there would not go for this surgery just for the covered plastic surgery that goes along with it, but I thought I would just throw this out there:  You can substantially reduce your cancer risk and have your PS covered.

Think about it.  It could save your life.  And you could look great too!

Topic: RE: High cholesterol 9 months after VSG

I had the same problem.  I had cholesterol preop just high enough to need smivistatin.  My levels got worse after surgery.  I hit goal last August, but at my physical (April I think?) my levels were still high despite being in maintenance for months.  My diet was excellent as I naturally avoid higher cholesterol foods.  (Sugar is my demon.)

My pcp told me once that sometimes you go on meds, get the levels down, and then try going off and the levels stay down.  Walking around with high levels untreated is not a good idea long term.  Just me 2 cents.

Your boss does not get to pick when you seek medical treatment, period.  If you had cancer, would she expect you to wait?  With that said though, it may very well not be until the Fall that you can even get in if you are not approved yet.

Topic: RE: Scheduled for RNY but considering switching to Sleeve

My doc recommended Rny, but I was firm about the sleeve.  At the time of my surgery he also indicated that I would sacrifice 5%-10% of the loss if I went with the sleeve.  At my one year follow up (and I made goal in 8 months) he said that at that point the sleevers and rny  were entirely comparable.  Here were my reasons for being so adamant about the sleeve:

1.  No rerouting or complication risk from rerouting.

2.  Easier recovery.

3.  No pouch, thus no food getting stuck.

4. No dumping (or at least reduced risk compared to rny).  I am a teacher and couldn't imagine dealing with that with a room full of 9 year olds.

5.  No malabsorprtion/less risk of vitamin deficiency.  I forget vitamins a couple times a week, so this was important.

6.  Gherlin reduced significantly- that turned out to be a huge factor for me.  When I feel hunger I eat way more than when I don't.  It varies by my monthly cycle.

7.  Everything works normally.  I eat normal food just in smaller amounts.  I tolerate everything and had no issues with reflux.  In fact, I had a hernia repaired that made an enormous difference with the acid issues so I am far better off than what I was before surgery.

8.  Granted you have the benefit of not absorbing calories for a while, but what happens when you start having to adjust for them.  I was worried that would set me up for regain.  No idea if it would have been an issue for me or not.

With all that said, my brother in law had Rny and made it to goal also.  He has been maintaining about 2 years longer than me.  He is currently experiencing a slight regain (about 15 pounds).  Also, I am a sugar junkie and I still struggle with it.  I do believe if I was willing to deal with dumping that I would not be struggling nearly as much with that.  With either procedure though it is still up to you- but it is difficult to really wrap your brain around how much the surgery helps and makes it possible until you experience it.

Ever wonder what info is sent of into cyberland about you because you use this site?  There is an app called "collusion" that will make a graph of what other sites receive info about you as a result of your online traffic.  Scary stuff.  Today when I check there were 2 sites that sent of info to a ton of sites- and OH was one of them.  Info was sent to 11 other sites after I went on here.  It is worth checking out if you ever wonder about these things.  If you go to the web store for chrome the app is called collusion for chrome, and it is free.

Topic: RE: Ethnic Foods

Ahhh... I love ethnic food!

There are similarities to all of them.  Depending on the culture there is always a relatively cheap starch that is a mainstay of the diet.  This may be rice, potatoes, pasta, etc.  Stay away from that part.  Choose to eat the protein and veggies.

middle eastern- shwarma, kabab, etc.  they have a lot of delicious meat dishes that are seasoned beautifully.  The crushed lentil soup is a good choice too.

mexican- fajitas, but skip the wraps.  The filling is awesome!  Molcajete, Parillada, etc.  just skip the carbs.

same thing for the other cultures- stick to the protein and skip the carb.

I would suggest vegetables- high in volume, low in calorie, high in nutrition.  It will assist with the hunger without running up the calories.  Green leafy choices are better than starchy veggies.  Careful with the dips and dressing.  Watch your carbs.

Today I finally scheduled a consultation with a plastic surgeon.  The scheduling lady told me today that his surgeries are book up into October.  Well that just sucks.  I was really hoping that I could use the summer for recovery, and am not all that keen on waiting until next summer.  I thought about calling earlier this year, but wanted to wait to make sure my weight was stable for a while.  So my question out there is if you have abdominoplasty and maybe the extra skin off the back and the neck taken care of, how long until I can go back in the classroom?  I am wondering if I take off the week right before Chrsitmas and pair it along with the Christmas break then I could resume in the beginning of January.  Is this feasible?  I know they "say" 6-8 weeks, but is it truly that?

Slider foods.  There are foods that pass through the sleeve quickly, thus even though you cannot eat a lot in a very short period of time... you can over an extended period of time.  I could eat an entire box of oreos for example in a span of a few hours.  Also, junk food is very dense in calories, so if that is the slider food of choice it is entirely possible to do that.

Your capacity will expand, but level out.  Some folks on here say their surgeons indicate you can stretch it out, others say you really can't.  You will still have to make sensible choices, but with the sleeve it is a lot easier to do.

I am not so sure about this either.  I have a larger sleeve- up in the 40's somewhere.  I can eat 3-4 ounces of protein and a little veggie if I really pu****  Given that, I am not so sure how "stretched" you can be.  It is normal for all of us no matter the sleeve size to have more capacity further out when compared to being pre-op.  As someone mentioned in an earlier post- if you are at goal and doing well then I would not worry and certainly not go back in for surgery.  Even if I was told that my sleeve is "grossly stretched" right now I would not consider going in since there is no need.

If you are pretty sure that the vitamin supplements will be challenging for you, then that alone would rule out the DS and Rny in my humble opinion.  I too struggle with supplements.  It is not that I mind taking them, but rather I forget a couple times per week.  The deficiencies are nothing to play around with!

I weighed a tad bit more than you and made it to goal in 8 months without difficulty.  Thus far, maintenance has gone well for the  9 months that I have been in that phase.  No reason to think the Vsg will not work for you, and as others pointed out it can be revised to DS if needed.

Topic: RE: Would you choose Lapband or RNY if your insurance didn't cover VSG?

Rny without any hesitation.  You can do lapband, but you will be at high risk for complication and not losing the weight, oh- and a revision to something that works.
