Topic: RE: Maintenance Carb Question for Vets

A normal range for blood sugar is approximately 80-120 mg/dL.  Under 60 is considered low, and I usually struggle to stay conscience around 30.  I normally don't feel "low" though until I am in the low 40's.  If I do 40 carbs a day I have issues with low blood sugar- or at least i did.  It has been quite a while since I went low now.  Not sure if that is because hypoglycemia issues have improved, or just because I eat carbs.  I normally alternate 15 or 30 net carbs at meals and that works well, with a daily average of about 100 net carbs when I am behaving.  I have not been behaving lately.  In the weight loss phase I had no trouble making it to goal as long as my calories were kept at or below 1200, managed the carbs as outlined above, and exercised 6 days a week.  Just be careful- it is indeed easy to get sucked onto a carb craving cycle.

I was prescribed as well, but ended up not being able to take it due to side effects.  My doc said it is only needed if you lose more than 2.5 pounds a week steadily.  I never took it post op, and at least thus far no problem.  I will take the gall bladder surgery over my kidneys shutting down :)

Hang in there.  One thing I like to do is to  each night (when I am in a funk) make a list of at least 10 things that I am grateful for.  Not the obvious stuff like my husband and children, but rather the little details that I need to slow down enough to appreciate- like my daughter today referring to her favorite Chinese restaurant as "chicken on a stick"- the name she used to use when she was very young and that was her favorite food, and that I had long forgotten.  Today, one of my students left a chocolate chip cookie on my chair with a brief note of kind words and signed it the cookie fairy, and the student who did it gave me what he would consider the very best part of his lunch- really, can kids be that friggin wondeful or what?!  Of course they have no idea about the cookie demon I fight...  Anyway, just take a moment to feel the love :)  We love you back here and I hope things turn around for you in short order.

Topic: RE: Carbohydrates vs fiber / and the big C word!

You are talking net carbs, and the difference is that the fiber takes longer to work though the system and is easier on the blood sugar levels.  Personally, I am from the camp that it is not the carbs that is bad... it is the nasty insulin cycle that can be triggered by them that is.  To avoid this I would alternate 15 and 30 net carbs for snacks and meals and I did just fine.

Topic: RE: Bougie sizes .. Does it matter?

I agree in spirit with what Frisco posted- I have a sleeve in the 40's and can certainly out eat my smaller sleeved peers.  But I also had no trouble getting to goal, and thus far in the infancy of maintenance no issues.  I do have some issues managing junk food, but I suspect with any size sleeve that would be the same.  I am not nearly far enough out to comment on what the regain may or may not be for me- I would need to go another 2 years before I felt that my experience on that would be helpful.  But, I do believe that compliance is necessary for all to be successful.  So far, I feel grateful to be able to eat a semi normal meal and not have issues with nausea or foamies (ever).  But will I feel this way in 3 years?  Time will tell.

One thing for sure- no way could I put down 16 ounces.  I have never done the cottage cheese test, but for sure could handle a cup- maybe a little more if I really pushed it.  Not two cups though!

Here are my favorites- easy on the calories and a nice job on the fiber:

Dixie carb counters soy nutlettes (fiber and protein and filling)
half calorie crackers by fibergourmet (70 cals, 12 grams fiber) from netrition.com
fiber one cereal, 1 cup with almond milk is a full day of fiber for not much calories
some protein bars have fiber
fruits and veggies

I also track fiber grams.  I found I need between 25-35 grams to keep things going.

Edit: just saw you are 3 weeks out- the foods above are not at your stage.  I did colace and miralax.  2 colace a day with a dose of miralax.

I have low blood pressure now... same symptoms you describe.  Last week my doc told me to add sodium to my diet along wth the powerade zero (1 quart a day) that I was told to drink from the previous doc appointment.  That totally worked for me.  The doc suggested a cup of chicken broth (not my homemade as I do not use salt) and my pressure went from 70/50 to 95/70... and the dizziness went away.  Thank goodness!!

Topic: RE: Moderation
I think this can be a divisive mindset myself.  Everybody has to eat.  Period.  By default, that means you MUST moderate what you eat.  Really this post is about the choice of not eating junk food or larger quantities of healthy food if you think about it.  Personally, I think it is terrible advice to skip frutis and vegetables because you are afraid of eating over 40 carbs, but then again I was able to get to goal doing that so the other route was not a good fit for me anyway.  I agree with ACbrown that to bake a cake and have it sitting on the counter can pretty much guarentee for some of us the we eat the whole cake, and I certianly fall into that group.  But becuase I don't bake a cake at home doesn't mean that I do not "moderate" what I eat.  I do struggle with emotional eating (lord know this last week or so is a testament to that) but I sure don't binge on fruits and veggies :)   This is a long term process for us, and mindful eating will always need to be a part of it.

I just want to support folks in whatever plan it is they think they need to do to get the weight off and keep it off

 Just sharing out...

Lately I have been on a Fibergourmet product kick.  They make half calorie crackers that have 12 grams of fiber and 70 calories in a prepackaged size.  And they are fairly cheap, a bit under $4 for a box of several bags.  My favorite is the cinnamon- just a tiny bit sweet, but not overly so.  The origianal version is my go to cracker with light cheese.  I also just tried some pasta- pretty decent.  Lower calories then regular pasta and again lots of fiber.  Throughout this process I have all but avoided pasta, but this is something I will work into maintence.  You can find this stuff at netrition.com.

Anyone out there have a low calorie pasta (beside the ****ake noodle/miracle noodle stuff)?

I understand your concerns, and I felt the same way... and in some ways still do.  Immediately after surgery you are immersed in recovery and focusing on hitting targets.  You deal with head hunger, but if you are compliant for fear of not hurting yourself (worked for me) then you get though it ok.  After just a few weeks of this you are feeling so much better and enthused that it continues to be fairly easy.  By 6 weeks your taste buds are retooled an it is becoming habit.  By 6 months it just feels weird to eat junk food.  A couple months after hittin goal, it is once again becoming easier to graze all day.  But those habits are ingrained and helping to keep the weight steady.  Not sure past that point :)   I would choose this surgery over an over again- it has made that much of a difference for me!

You can see the loss breakdown month by month in my ticker.  Once I hit goal i increased cals and decreased exercise- and still lost.  Now it seems I am much closer to my maintence point (about 1600 calories with exercise a few times per week) but won't know for a little more.  I am a stair step loser so it is possible I have loss week coming shortly, but then again maybe not.  Lots of loss came after the 6 month mark and if I maintaned that plan longer I am confident that it woud have continued to lead to loss.  Just keep trying :)

I limited it to under 40 at first, and under 800 cals.  This caused me some blood sugar issues (low) so increased per my team.  Through  more than half the time getting to goal I did about a 100 net carbs a day roughly and alternated 15 and 30 carb meals/snacks and had calories between 1,00-1,200 calories.  I exercised to go along with those calories.  Worked just fine.

I have a schizophrenic sister.  I hate saying this, but once she qualified for disability the medical insurance was far, far better for her condition then private insurance.  There are also a load of programs that you may be able to find locally to help.  There are adult foster homes geared toward schizophrenic patients as well that may be a solution either temporarily or perhaps longer term if that is what the need is.  If your son is unable to care for himself you may want to pursue disability.  It will open up a lot of options to help him.  Good luck.

I had no problem getting 800 calories in by 2 months out at all.   Here are my opinions:

1.  6 month honeymoon is a myth.  Statistically, sure- people tend to level out then.  But if you work your plan you lose weight.  I dropped a good chunk after the honeymoon period, and could continue at the same rate I believe if I continued with the program I was following.
2.  It is not a race, but neithr is it time to eat whatever you want and expect to lose weight.
3.  I ate higher calories all the way through, but I also had higher than normal levels of exercise.  Find your balance.

There is no need to stay at 600 calories.  Increase them if it feels better, make nutritionally sound choices, and add in some exercise.  Just my thoughts though.  You should really run this by your team of docs and nuts- tap into that system you paid a gajillion dollars for!
