I think the trick is to crawl back up on that wagon.  I have had a bad day here and there, but an even bigger issue then the bad day is how I respond to the bad day.  My high spike days always involves a lot of carbs, so try eliminating them.

I do understand the idea of eating a little more to find the satiety point.  On a few scatteed days I ate lunch at work, and was still hungry.  Within an hour I ate a protein bar, and that would then take care of the contant hunger/cravings.  I think this is somthing you have to be really careful with.

Eggs were not allowed for me until after 14 days.  Sounds like your stomach is not ready for that yet.  I am so sorry you are experiencing this on a freshly sewn stomach :(  I wouldn't try eggs again for a while.  For the first two weeks I lived on greek yogurt thinned out with Torani sugar free vanilla syrup, shakes, and Isopure plus.  I did try some cream of wheat ( a little thin) and it was heavenly, but then made me starve the rest of the day.  I wish you a speedy recovery!

Topic: RE: Working Out : Are You More Hungry or NOT???
This really really depends for me.  If I am suffering from head hunger, then I exercise and that banishes the head hunger.  Yea!

However, most days I walk 4-5 miles or about an hour and half, do the elliptical for 30 minutes, and a about 5-10 minutes of weights for the upper body.  If I am a little hungry before the work out it knocks out the hunger, but I absoultely want to eat more at night after about 30-45 minutes or so.  Like mentioned in the previous post i will usually take in some protein- although by that late at night my calories are crunched so I use Isopure Plus  (60 cals, 15 grams protein) and take my vitamins for the night.  If that doesn't work then I might add a half cup or less of cottage cheese.

So far my weight loss has been average overall, but surely adding up over the months.

Topic: RE: Riding a bike is hard work, but happy I can do it again.
 Hi Heather,

Before I share what I purchased you should know I researched it for like 12 seconds.  I bought a mountain bike (mens) that had a 29 inch frame from Walmart.  It was $200 and delivered free.  I would have preferred the Schwin 29 inch, but it was an extra hundred dollars and I am just not so sure about this biking thing yet.  I figured my husband would use it if I didn't and his bike needs replacing.

I am all legs, and it is wonderful to have the larger frame.  I am not all pretzeled up on it either, and the handle bars make it so I can sit a bit straighter- a far more comfortable position and less stress on my hands and wrists.  I have unusually long femurs so my knees still come above the handle bars a smidge, but it is so much better than a 26 inch.  I weight 242 at the moment and this bike has no difficulty hauling my fat rear around.

This bike replaced my 26 inch Schwin cruiser, and let me tell you there is a major difference in how it pedals.  My crusier takes far less energy on a flat road and coasts for ever compared to the mountain bike.  The tires are sturdier on the mountain bike though and eventually I want to take it on the trails near my house... if I could just pedal the darn thing longer than three and half minutes!

Overall it is ok.  I am thinking I should have held out for a Schwin and taken a harder look at the hybrid (part mountain bike part cruiser).  If I end up using this enough this season and next I will replace it with a better version :)

Thanks- I didn't even look up by weight, that would totally work.  Every one I picked on myfitnesspal was done by cup.  Thanks for your input!  I was not so worried about the calories, but given enough it does count as some protein- and that I want to be accurate on as I typically barely hit my 90 each day.

 Just a cautionary note-

Make sure that this includes the hosptial stay.  The price my surgeon charged for the surgery was I felt very reasonable.  But then tack on the anestheologist and the hospital bill and that added over $20,000.  If ya'll are getting the sleeve at $8,000 and that includes all of the hospital stay and everything that seems like a really great deal!

If you enter 1 cup raw spinach in for myfitnesspal, is that a packed cup, a loose pile in a cup, or...?  No clue how to measure spinach apparently!

Ok, I super appreciate everybody's posts.  I think I need to cut back.  I have no clue why all of a sudden I am struggling like mad to stay under 1000 calories, but this is not going to work out long term.  I am grazing a little at night and I need to cut that out pronto.  I realized today that I lost site of the eat with at least 3 hours in between rule, so I am going to focus on that tomorrow.

Oh, and my heartrate goes to 150 just thinking about exercise so generally that probably isn't terribly unrealistic.

I am feeling like exercise should go well long term.  I have been very consistent, but I still need to back of the calories.

Thanks again.

I am using myfitnesspal as the guide on the exercise.  It is a lot- I use the elliptical, a little weight lifting, and a 5 mile walk to hit those numbers.  I never make it a "goal" to do that much in one day, as that would be a recipe for falure for me.  But I do make a goal of at least 30 minutes of something, and I have found once I get started I usually go much longer than that.

Topic: RE: So Dizzy!
I had a lot of trouble with this the first few weeks post op.  My blood sugar was dropping very low, and usually it was more of an issue first thing in the morning.  I found that if I drank 4 ounces of soy milk it would make me feel a ton better.

Another OH friend here had dizzy issues, and she realized she needed to increase fluids.  It was a dehydration issue.  She also had a bit of issue with low blood pressure, which also can cause dizziness.

Try to pay attention to when it hits.  Correlate it to fluid intake and carbs to see if you can rule out one or the other.  I would also mention it to the doc.

Just throwing this out there for opinions.   Which do you think is a better approach...

600-800 calories with an average of 600 calories burned exericising and thus your calories zero out for the day or stay under 200 or so, BUT you are able to not graze and adhere more strictly to plan

OR....

800-1000 calories consumed, 1500 or so calories burned during exericse, but grazing is a minor issue.  Net calories I am better of with this option, but hate the struggle of avoidng grazing.  Not sure why grazing is so much more of an issue when I work out more either.

Just curious if others out there share this dilema and how you handle it.

Topic: RE: 600 - 800 calories, really?
i have to work at keeping calories under 800 daily- I could do 1200 no problem at this point.  I have spent most of the beginning time post op going low carb, and over the last few weeks added carb back in.  Big mistake.  My calories shot up like mad, and there is a clear pattern of grazing that kicked in.  I think tis is why many elect to keep carbs under 40 grams a day,, and why I am reverting back to that.

I think it is true that you will lose weight at 1200 calories a day, but it would obviously be at a much slower weight  For many, the bulk of the weight loss happens in the first 6 months, so it is a time to maximize the loss.

I think you will find once you are sleeved that 800 calories feels like our old 3000 calories due to the restriction and loss of hunger.  I truly do not feel deprived at the 800 calorie range, although I have to be very diligent about head hunger daily.

Topic: RE: If EVERYTHINg your family does revolves around food...
My family knows, so aside from their curiosity on what and how much I eat they unerstand that I will not be eating much.  It gives you plenty of opportunity to chat at the social functions and overall I found that it has been a non-issue.

Work is a little weird for me.  I elected to not tell them at work.  It has been noticed in the staff lounge how little I eat, but I just get the occasional question.  I have been able to avoid going out to a meal with them, up until today.  I guess I still don't feel like I need to explain anything.  Planning on just ordering a side of something or perhaps an appetizer if the unknown restaurant has a healthier choice.

I remember being worried a lot about this in the beginning of the journey.  It really has worked out.  I think one point to consider is that you can use the surgery to begin to redefine your preferred activity of going out to eat/eating and begin to replace some of that social acitivty with healthier choices such as exercising with the family members, or perhaps joining a walking club at the temple, or some other version that fits your "new" lifestyle.

I was back to work in 2 weeks and feeling fine.  By 6 weeks I couldn't even feel the healing of the surgery anymore-hiatal hernia included.  The only thing still lingering by that time is that my energy level was not as high as it is now, but of course I have lost a lot of weight since then.  If it is a vacation you won't need to worry about having stamina for 18 hours of work and making dinner, and chores and all of life's normal activity.  If it were me, I would go.  But I think I would also purchase travel insurance just in case.

Oh, I did!  No clue that I had it going into surgery either.  I too would wake up choking at night on the reflux, saliva out of control, and a lotta burn.  I just thought it was normal believe it or not.

I woke up from surgery and once the fog lifted I realized I had ZERO heartburn.  I was scared about this too, as the surgery for some increases reflux.  I was scared about having to down the 8 million tums I had grown so dependent on and the extra strength zantax wasn't enough.

But, the surgery was worth it JUST for the hernia repair!!!  Yes, I had some chest discomfort from it- but very tolerable.  It bothered me to take a deep breath.  Use your spirometer, it seemed to help.  It took a couple weeks for the soreness to go away, but again the whole process was very tolerable.  And I still cannot believe that I NEVER need acid medicine anymore!!
