Only 6 weeks out, but perhaps revert to the plan from your early days

Most posts indicate:
600-800 calores
less than 40 carb
Protein first
At least 64 ounces water
Wait at least 3 hours between eating
exercise
Vitamin supplements
Track your calories and protein (I use myfitnesspal.com- free and easy)

My NUT has me at:
600 calories
90 grams of protein (based on height, I am 6'1)
3 meals, 2 snacks
She does not restict carbs under 40, but rather uses this formula

Divide your daily calorie allowance in half.  Take that number and divide by 4- that is your carb target.  For example, I have a 600 calorie target divided by 2 is 300.  300 divided by 4 is 75.  Hence, my carb target according to my NUT is 75.

Topic: RE: Did anyone have to change their goal weight?
My surgeon never formally told me a weight, but I was asked.  My reply was a normal BMI- whatever that is.  At my height I could be 189, but I have a small bone structure.  Hence, I dropped mine down to 160.  Then after that I started reading posts about the weight of the excess skin and met a lady at the support group who had 16 pounds removed during plastic surgery.  Now I am thinking that 160 might be on the low side if plastic surgery is not done.  For now, I am leaving the 160 as a goal.  When I get closer I may adjust.  I am still way too heavy to know what 180 or 190 is going to look and feel like, let alone 160.

Topic: RE: bento box
Bento Box- a Japanese lunchbox that is unusually small by American standards, stacks vertically typically, and has small separate compartments.  Ideal for us VSG'rs for our small portions.  Here is a link to the one that I bought at Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Kotobuki-2-Tiered-Bento-Box-Beckoning/ dp/B00200L7ZU/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1328212844&sr=8-11

Note that it is microwave safe (except lid) and dishwasher approved.  This is not the case with many Japanese versions so take the time to read the small print.  The above model has a lead that is not leak proof- not appropriate for soup.  Ketchup was ok.

Next on my list is this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Laptop-B620-Purple-Container-Container s-Accessories/dp/B002N7R93E/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8 &qid=1328212906&sr=1-1

It was not my first choice only because it holds so much more and I wanted one that slipped easily into my purse.  But with that said, next on my list.  I think it would hold a whole day worth for traveling or days where I will not be home to access better choices.

I did buy a lock lid version for under $3 at an Asian market.  This is not an Asian product, but works beautifully.  I bet you could find it at Walmart, Target, etc.  Here is an example of a set of the style I am referring to from Walmart:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sterilite-20-Piece-Food-Storage-Se t/11018654

I highly recommend a bento box- love, love, love it!!!

Ok, that is a totally difficult phone call.  I know that hearing the news is difficult- I can totally relate.  I am a cancer patient- please take comfort in knowing that it is benign.  That does mean it doesn't spread (metastatic),  Consequently, if it was removed it is indeed a done deal.

I would gently suggest that you write down a list of all of the questions that you have and prepare for your next visit/phone call.  I have found that in normal doctor appointments this is not neceesary for me.  For my cancer appointments, however, I seem to shut down quickly and leave without having any idea what was just discussed.  And I forget to ask questions.  Now, I make a habit of writing them down and taking notes on the answer to force myself to process at least enough to be able to go back through the notes later.  My one doctor also recognizes that I am pretty much a mental idiot so he has me repeat back what was covered and asks me quiz type questions to confirm that I do not have misconceptions.  It always surprises me when I get a quiz question wrong- my brain seems to immediatly go to worse case scenarios and filling in gaps.  He undoes this by the questioning.

Hang in there and sending you hugs!!

Pretty much all of my overeating can be traced directly to sugar/carb issues.  I too contemplated the bypass, but in the end wanted to avoid the permanent elimination of some medications (Nsaids and such).  My sugeon gently asked about the RNY too given my situation.

It is shocking to me how much better cravings are and overall management of them has been going very well.  Not perfect, but very very well.  There is not constant hunger, and the little bit of hunger I do have can be dealt with by my finding some type of activity to keep me occupied.  I am not far enough out right now to say that sugar will not eventually be an issue, but right now it is for sure not a problem.  Of course I avoid it though and the sleeve is helping the avoidance to be far easier than I thought it would be prior to surgery.

The hernia repair recovery was unexpected for me, but holy smokes not having constant reflux was so worth it!!!

Your protein target depends on your height.  The NUT had me listed as 5'10'' and that was a 82 gram target.  A couple days ago a different NUT thought I was taller and she asked- I am 6'1'' pushing 6'2''.  That changed my protein target up to 90.  Perhaps do a poll on people at your height to see what their targets are?

My protein range is now 90-110.  I am working hard at hitting 90.  Oddly, 82 never seemed that hard but those few extra grams are rough!

Topic: RE: What did I get myself in to???
Wow, congratulations on being the inspiration for a company to take good care of their employees!!  Here are a few ideas based on the support program I am involved with:

1.  Two meetings a month.  We  meet for an hour or so.  It starts by going around and doing a quick share for each person, which invariably triggers a lot of questions that the group answers.  The psychologist chairs it.  Toward the end is a handout and a discussion on a worthy topic.  Last week was emotional eating.

2.  Nutrition classes.

3.  Cooking classes.  You may not have a kitchen, but if you have access to a sink that should do it.  Teachers can cook for 30 in a classroom setting.

4.  Start an exercise club/program.  Even better if you can somehow incentivize this.  I heard throught the grapevine that Walmart has some program out there that may be a source for you.

5.   Create a buddy system.  If people want assistance in partnering up for support then the Wellness program could work as a liason to get them started.

6.  At the Dh's school they had enough people interested in Weigh****chers to bring in a leader right to the school for meetings.  Worth a shot!

7.  At our job once a year in January an email goes out to all employees to join in a weightloss contest.  Everybody pays in $5 to start.  If you gain pay in a $1 a pound.  (No money back for weight loss).  At the end the top 3 split the money with first getting more than second, and second more than third.  Popular program in our district and easy to run.  Everybody has to email in only the pounds lost or gained- not the actual weight.  The fat chick here appreciated that!

8.  My Dh started waking on his lunch break.  At first he was teased.  Now other teachers have joined him!  Maybe do a walking club if your building is large enough to do inside or has enough area outside.  Measure out a distance to people know how to gauge.

How fun- something like this would be right up my alley!  Have fun with this!
