I hear you sleeve sister!  I had a crap load of shake mixes sitting around that I could no longer gag down.  Tried some in the coffee and actually liked it!  Praise the Lord we are still able to drink decaf!  I do not even mix my powders into a paste.  1/2 cup coffee, stir in powder, add last 1/2 cup, stir, and good to go!  I have not tried plain whey yet- I am hoping that is good to so that I can drop calories.

Topic: RE: Can food get "stuck" with a sleeve?
Ok, I am glad to read this.  I have only had a bit of an issue here and there with swallowing- during the first couple weeks only.  The doc said due to the reflux endured previously that the esophogus was not as pliable as a normal one- hence the swallowing issue.  I didn't think this counted as something being stuck in the way that the brother in law described it, but thought I would check.  He is entirely unable to eat bread because it gets stuck.  Good to know that we will function pretty close to normal :)

I do get that if one overeats there are issues- I was inquiring about managed portion sizes.

Foamies- if you eat too much or too fast you may feel the need (or actually) to spit up.  When you do it is a foamy mess.  I think- hasn't happened to me.

Thank you everybody for the replies :)

I get we are supposed to follow the phases, chew and then chew some more.  My brother in law talked about food getting stuck and how it is no fun.  He had the RNY though- is this an issue for sleevers?

Topic: RE: recent sleevers, help
 Hello,

I had a super easy recovery!   In the hospital I did have a minor bout with naseua when I first woke up from surgery.  My left shoulder is where I felt the most pain- but highly tolerable and I did not need the morphine pump.  The pain I did have resulted far more from my hiatal hernia repair then the stomach surgery.  First week out I took it easy, but again pain was minimal and I was tolerating everyting beautifully.  I had no problem getting in my water and protein.  I was back in my classroom two weeks later without difficulty.  On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the easiest recovery I would place it at a 9.  It would have been a 10 if the hiatal hernia was a non-issue.

Topic: RE: Today I am going to do it.
Yesterday after my 6 week NUT appointment, different NUT, my numbers changed.  My protein was increased by a minimum of 8 grams and my calories decreased.  That is a tough combination for me.  The last few days I kept within the 600-800 calorie range, but hit the 800 a couple of times and no where near the new protein target.  Time to restart from square one.  I had been trying to get the protein from regular food, but it just isn't working out so well.  Now, back to drinking protein and using the Jarrow whey supplement.

I am wondering if by having the wrong protein target given to me for the first 6 weeks if that may have resulted in a little less weight loss??

Just rambling this morning.  Hope everybody has a great day!

You can buy low carb hi protein pancake mix.  I have tried Proti diet- 15 grams of protein for 90 calories.  With one envelope I can make 6 small pancakes.  I use sugar free syrup.  Put 1 morningstar veggie sausage link and it is a great breakfast.  Tough to finish all of the pancake though...

The pancakes are pretty decent too.

I have the exact same shape, just a slightly smaller version of it.  Where I can see it is in clothing- started at a busting at the seams 28 and now a 22 (slacks) fits nicely.  I even managed to button a pair of 20 tall and I truly thought that I would have to get down to 230 for that to happen!  (I am 272 so I was way off).  My face is slightly thinner, but overall the weigh tloss is not obvious.

That must have been a real surprise!  You have come to the right place- welcome!  The vets here do a fantastic job of posting tips all the time.  Here is a list of some of my favorites- although note that i am only 6 weeks out and not a vet!

1.  Plan your food, and do not eat unplanned food.
2.  Track your food intake- all of it.  Many of us use myfitnesspal.com  It is free, easy, and truly helps!
3.  No grazing!
4.  Many low carb it keeping carbs under 40 grams.
5.  During the losing phase a common calore range is 600-800.  My NUT told me today 600.
6.  Sip, sip, sip!
7.  Eat the protein first, always.  It closes the pyloric valve so you are full longer.  Search pyloric valve for a fantastic post by Frisco on this topic.
8.  Undereat your sleeve.  If you can eat 4 ounces, only eat 2 or so and see if that will satiate you.
9.  If you fall off the wagon, crawl right back on.
10.  If you do not want to share with coworkers or friends or whatever, have a plan of what you will say to them when everybody notices the weight loss.
11.  It is common to stall at 3 weeks.  Don't fret and just stay on plan!
12.  Follow your vitamin regiment.

Congrats on your sleeve- we are all a group of happy folks here so welcome aboard!

Topic: RE: Unflavored Protien powders!!!! I Need advice!!!!
I am a fan of the Jarrow brand unflavored whey (off Amazon).  Not a fan of Designer Whey- it doesn't dissolve well.

Consider different varieties of protein drinks other than shakes.  I use
Isopure Plus 60 cals 15 g protein  Alpine Punch flavor
Isopure Smoothie  (once I got sick to death of shakes) 210 cals  32 g protein
Hot chocolate (hi protein version) 15 g protein, 90 cals

Lots of posters use Nectar- I have not tried that one.  Go easy on quantities as post op it is a dice roll on what you will like/tolerate.

I also use alot of powerade zero to keep my hydrated.

I also recently started putting shake mix or RTD in my coffee- much more tolerable given my coffee addiction seems to easily override the shake aversion :)

I have not heard of Gladiator- double check that the protein is from whey and that the carbs are not sky high.

Have fun shopping!

Topic: RE: Living a normal life
I just asked this questiion to my NUT this morning.  Here was her reply- I am 6 weeks out:

1.  600 calories for now, 90-110 grams of protein range.
2.  Further out, but still during the losing phase it will be more like 1100-1200.  I asked her if she thoght that I would still lose at that level and she said yes.  I don't believe her :(
3.  She also said to take the calories, for example 640, for a day.  Divide that in half- 320 should be to protein.  Take the other 320 and divide by 4 to determine your carb intake for the day- in this example arbe would be 80.  I am still shooting for 40 and under daily.

Just one NUT's opinion...

Topic: RE: Potein, Calories, Coffee, Gym, OH MY!
 Hey there :)

I put a chocolate based soy protein shake mix directly in the coffee and mix.  1/2 cup coffee, dump in the powder, stir, remaining coffee goes in.  No issues with it that way.  I have also dumped in the RTD version, but even if that is room temp it still cools my coffee down more than what I like.  I do mix protein with room temp liquid first if I add it to food or soup to help prevent clumping.

Once upon a time I took a weight lifting class in college that started at 8 a.m.  We had to track everything in that class as far as weight lifted, reps, etc.  My roommate and I saw a clear correlation to the workout and skipping breakfast- like an insane correlation.  I would eat first for sure.  It was a truly great life lesson, as back then I would skip breakfast all the time.
