thanks!  i've always want to quit but am scared of gaining weight, but i suppose an extra 10lbs won't matter if it's before surgery.  heh.

i'm also not able to afford it at this time, my mom is trying to help me out (she is on board and wants to get it done too, we might be able to go together to mexico).    so when she's able to give me a general idea of when we can do this i can book ahead and make the final decision.  some days i feel like it's a pretty scary change, and others i feel like i want to have my life back!  it's easy to hide in the house and not look in the mirror but what kind of life is that?  that's what im doing right now. :(  i'm only 40 and feel like im missing out on my life!

i don't have a date yet.  only started researching in november.  i want to be as mentally prepared as possible and i'm not completely there yet, i want to have quit smoking for a few months first and get my iron up (i'm anemic right now).  i really want my family on board too, although i realize like others have said, they might never be until i succeed and show them.
Topic: RE: Uncomfortable
i haven't had surgery, but i know that feeling of full/hungry.  for me it's stomach acid and burping from gerd.
Topic: RE: Vsg vs Diets
thank you, i think i'm very much like you.  i believe i'm the type *****sponds to carbs with a serotonin release making it a 'comfort' food and that's when i find it hard to stop eating.  every time i read that bread doesn't sit well with people i feel a bit of relief knowing that i will be too scared to eat it.  i don't like to see people uncomfortable but it's good to learn from others.  i have been supplementing for a year with 5htp because i was getting migraines and find that since i have been on it my mood has improved and my anxiety levels have decreased.  i know that carbs = tryptophan release (what 5htp is) = serotonin release, and hopefully the transition to low carb will be easier on anxiety and mood issues.

i'm already trying to eat my protein first.  my way has always been smoosh everything together, going to train myself to stop that lol.

i love walking to release endorphins, i always have extra energy and feel great after being on the treadmill.

when i first started researching i saw a LOT of youtube videos of people who were a year to a couple years out who were able to eat small amounts of the foods they still liked without gorging or gaining the weight back.  i think as long as it's not a trigger food it's just fine.  i know when i'm sleeved it will be wise for me to stay away from pasta.  i don't crave it but when i start eating it i tend to need a LOT of it to make me satisfied.  and thinking of it probably being the type of food you might be able to work around with, i won't even go there.

i think that chemical is leptin right?

i was wondering about body changes too, reading people eating under 1000 calories a day freaked me out at first, i thought omg, i'm gonna be crawling around on the floor!  but besides the first few months when they are adjusting and might lose some hair, everyone i have seen in the before and afters look absolutely fantastic, healthy and years younger.  one thing my father said was 'if you lose weight too fast you are gonna look so old because all your wrinkles will come out'  (how tactful dad!).  i really think it changes our bodies too in some weird way.  i was reading this antiWLS site for a well rounded education on both sides and this lady was nattering away about how grehlin and human growth hormone are connected and she was stating that if you have most of your stomach cut out you will age faster.  so i did some research and found that we don't produce grehlin just in our stomachs, we do in our brain (hypothalmus), the same place where we produce the growth hormone, so there is no connection at all to our stomach loss making us age faster.

if you can find that study i'd love it!
Topic: RE: Vsg vs Diets
i think that's the biggest selling point for me.  i get really hungry and i'm hoping that i get the benefit from a bit of appetite loss.  for me to not be hungry i have to put off eating as long as possible in the day but once i eat it seems like im so hungry for the rest of the time i'm awake.  i could never just 'diet' by restricting my calories, wouldn't last very long.   i just want to feel full on a small amount of food.

i just started PPIs too.  i read about people having surgery and getting a hungry feeling because of stomach acid.  so maybe this will help me before surgery too.

"how about trying diet and exercise one more time?"

I KNOW RIGHT!  i get that from the few people i told. suprisingly my doctor was the one that suggested wls for me.  'there is a group of ladies who go to mexico and get it done cheap there'.  where i live in canada there is like a four year waiting list and i wouldn't qualify anyways, you need to be on deaths door to qualify.  so mexico was the most viable idea.

thanks for saying that about the attitude.  i really want to do this once.  and just hanging around here i'm noticing my mentality is already changing.  i want to go into this with as much education as i can to be successful and have my before and afters up eventually lol.

drunk posting!

haha j/k

i love love LOVE the archives.  first week i was here i tried to find the worst horror stories imaginable to get fear out of the way first.  AND it really cemented my decision to go VSG.  and choose a doctor!

don't get me wrong, i never thought the VSG was going to be just a put it in and expect miracles type of deal.

i just want to prove it's the superior alternative over diet programs, potions and 'all you need to do is diet and exercise?' type stuff that's being thrown at me. :D

i mean really, i already exercise and yeah i probably could lose weight if i cut down on my eating, but jeesh, i'd be starving if i still had grehlin and all that stomach space to fill.  (i'm sure it's up to 10 cups or more by now, i mean if i'm hungry i can eat a LOT)

THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE!

and thank goodness for these boards so we can get an idea of what might work for us long term.  i am glad to hear that you are are happy with your sleeve and it is successful and you aren't miserable starving yourself!
Topic: RE: Vsg vs Diets
after reading the bread making someone's chest feel tight post, i don't ever want to try bread, i hate it already, it makes me drowsy and feel like crap.  i think it migh be gluten but carbs make me sluggish.  i only like rice and pasta though, but not enough to screw myself up with the sleeve.

i've tried to eat lower cal without surgery, felt icky, but then i wasn't following the protein first rule.

THANK YOU!

that's what i thought.  i really want to know this because i'm getting MAJOR flak from my family about getting this surgery.  I would love to say "WELL YOU DONT GAIN THE WEIGHT BACK" but i know that's not true.  I just need to come up with lots of comebacks to their questions and answer them correctly and truthfully.  Mostly I'd love to just shove a large high carbohydrate bun in their mouths to shut them up.  LoL.

Took me a while to convince my dad my stomach wouldn't explode.

They keep telling me to go on Weigh****chers or Herbal Magic (that costs like the same amount in a year as getting a VSG in mexico and you have to spend thousands on their 'supplements'). But just because this is surgery, OH LORD, they think I'm being a fool!  grrr...

The latest is "Oh this lady I know had a bypass and gained all the weight back, why would you mutilate yourself when you will just gain it back in a couple of years, why don't you just try Weigh****chers instead".  Seriously I started doubting my decision.  Started thinking that the weight would come back unless i became orthorexic.  All the talk about people failing and worry about long term loss % was making me feel that maybe my family is right.

Most of my weight was gained during pregnancies (went from 120 to 210 having a boy and a girl within 4 years of each other), I've never lost it because I watched my mom yo-yo so many years and hurt her body.  So I'm waiting for something that' isn't going to put me in the 95% who are going to gain it back.  I just found out about the sleeve a couple of months ago and it seemed to be the only thing that I felt comfy with.

I've already started eating lower carb and tried out Friscos recipe for kale and porkchop (well i had chicken) and i LURVED IT!!!!  I already really like healthier foods (don't have a sweet tooth thank goodness!).  So I am pretty confident I will do well.  Gotta get that baby weight off.  My babies are 18 and 15 so it's about time lol.

Topic: RE: Vsg vs Diets
After reading about how vigilant people must be after surgery so they don't regain in maintenence,  I started thinking, well this is like any other diet really except I just got my a majority of my stomach removed.  So my question is what makes the VSG different from a regular diet?  Is it the grehlin part that keeps us from not constantly feeing hungry so we have a better chance?  Is it the restriction that helps us out?  I know people will try to work 'around' the sleeve and cheat, are those the ones that fail while the ones who stay true to the right way of eating guaranteed success?

I am in no way saying everyone gains the weight back, or that I will not be a dedicated sleever, It's more of a general question I have.  I know the sleeve is a tool, and that we ourselves have to do a lot of the work by not f'ing it up.  But what makes it easier than dieting in the end?

Please don't hurt me for asking this!  I hope it didn't come out wrong lol.

Topic: RE: oops! I'm pretty lost here.
why would you think it's not possible to get back on track?  you are only 4 weeks out!  never ever stop trying.  re read your eating plan and then read it again.  good luck!
Topic: RE: Tightness in chest - from bread?
i guess bread is not your friend!

do you ever find that if you have a weird symptom, if you get stressed about it, it tends to get worse and you can't stop thinking about it?  ugh.  i get that.

you going to try it again?  see if that's what it was?
Topic: RE: good carbs
to me good carbs are fiber bad carbs are starches.  there is a good site i use that shows the glycemic index of carbs so you can put in whatever you want and it will tell you all the vitamins in it, caloric ratios (fats/carbs/fiber), amino acid score, etc.

sometimes i like to read conspiracy sites and get myself freaked out over the yellowstone caldera erupting.  it's a pretty good adrenaline rush lol.
Topic: RE: Laxatives
quick comment about milk of magnesia.  i've taken it before and it causes me to have green runny stools and a bending over type abdominal cramps (i took the recommended dose).  not sure if it means i can't tolerate it or i have gallbladder issues.  weird hey?
Topic: RE: Finally down some pounds <3 and it's happening pretty quick!
gonna be fun watching you melt away!  you have to post pix when you hit your future goals!  grats!
Topic: RE: Weight lost
so you lost 12lbs in the first two weeks?  that seems okay from what i've seen on here.

the hunger could be from stomach acid.  are you on a pill for gerd or acid?  some say that excess acid can mimic hunger pangs in the stomach.

i know you want to lose weight super fast, but you have to make sure your body is at it's healthiest before anything else right now.  you are recovering from surgery and need nutrients, especially protein for healing and water for hydration and proper bodily functions.

are you getting enough liquids (at least 64 oz a day).. are you getting enough protein?  what is your post surgery eating plan and are you following it?  you sorta sound a bit like you are starving yourself because you aren't exercising yet.  i am not saying that's what you are doing but if you could post what you eat or drink during the day i'm sure some of the more experienced people on here would be very happy to help guide you if you feel lost.

don't obsess about the weight, that will come.  focus on helping your body recover from surgery, following a proper post op plan that will help you with your success and everything else will fall into place.
