Topic: RE: Someone Tell This Not For Nothing
It will be ok.  Try limiting your carbs as much as you can since the body will burn those (and fat intake) before it burns the fat stores it has.  Also dont freak out about the daily fluxuations you can have due to water retention and your body just adjusting itself.  When you lose weight quickly the body will go into survival mode and try to store as much as it can, but it will adjust and things will get back on track.  Just hang in there and keep following the plan your Dr gave you.  If you didnt get one than no fat/low fat options as much as you can, low sugar options as much as you can, get your liquid and protein in and try to stay away from carbs.  It gets much better when you can start taking in dense protein :)
Topic: RE: Weight loss stall due to starvation effect?
All I know is that 3 weeks post op I kept around the same weight but after a week I did loose inches.  Yesterday I decided I was going to eat some additional snacks (fat free pudding, italian ice) to up my calories for the day.  This morning I woke up showing a decrease of about 3 pounds.  Was it the additional calories, was it just that my body was ready to lose more weight again... who knows, and who cares .  All I know is the next time I am in a stall I am going to have some extra snacks and see what happens.

*please note that my normal daily calorie intake is 800 or less, and that I only added 200 or less with the additional snacks.  In no way was I pigging out like I used to do.*
Topic: RE: 18 days po and finally!!
I ended up sticking with soups and refried beans during that phase.  My first real food was some turkey deli meat (hickory smoked) with string cheese and honey dejion mustard rolled up.
Topic: RE: 1 week post-op
at least it can only get better.
Topic: RE: Help! Frustrated and not sure what to do
I always find it best to do these things in person.  When your on the phone the person on the other line can easily disregard you, when you are standing in front of them looking them in the eyes its much harder and they are more willing to help you out.
Topic: RE: question - reasons for preop diet?
It may be a combination of all 3 depending on the patient history your Dr has had.  The preop diet is a great way for people to lose a little extra weight should they need it to make their surgery safer.  It also helps shrink the liver so the Dr has more room to work and the liver doesnt get in the way.  For a VSG clearing out the system is not a huge reason, that is more for the people having their internals rewired.
Topic: RE: Is it going to be worth it? Can I Change?
I am like you, I love to eat.  Heck I am sure almost if not everyone on here feels (felt) the same.  I am only starting week 4 post op but at least for me the joy and amazment I have felt since the surgery outways my love to eat.  I have times that I am watching tv and see an add for something I would have gone out and gotten within 3 days before but I have also had times when the craving in my mind was greater then the actual event.  Post surgery I was just craving pizza which used to be a staple in my house.  My wife was also craving it so I told her it was ok to go get one (she didnt want to be mean to me).  I took a small slice, peeled off the toppings and took a bite, chewed it up and spit it out.  I never had intentions to swallow the food (I was still on liqiuds only) but even what I did seemed like more effort than the reward of tasting the pizza gave me.  I have yet to find a craving of something that chewing and spitting seemed worth it in the end.  But the 55 lbs, 2 pant sizes I have lost so far constantly comes back to make my happy (almost giddy) when I find clothes in my closet I couldnt wear for the last few years fitting nicely once again.
Topic: RE: GNC Lean Shake
Thanks for the suggestion, I will have to go try those out.
Topic: RE: Protein Nutrition Shake
I have not, but only because when it comes to the protein shakes I want the best bang for my oz.  580 calories to get 40g of protein seemed a bit high for me.  I use ISO-100 and even with my worst smoothie to make I am around 260 calories for about 33g of protein.  That is using a banana, 1/4 cup lite chocolate silk, and the ISO-100.  If I mix with water then its only 106 calories for 24g.  It also helps in my mind that for the ISO-100 the protein isolate is the first ingredient listed.

Those are just my thoughts though, everyone has to make their own choices and as long as it is a protein isolate there probably isnt a wrong answer as long as you like it and will be able to consume it.  My Dr told me that no matter how much you enjoy a protein drink, over time you will get sick of it and boy was he right.

Topic: RE: protein peanut butter cups
This sounds great, I am going to have to try it out when I am off of soft foods in a month.
Topic: RE: Loving the results
Well I am at the end of week 3 post op.  Scale has not moved much this week, but after reading some posts on here I have been taking my measurements weekly.  While the pounds remain the same I have lost an inch from my chest and belly, and a half inch in the thigh and butt.

All the work clothes I didnt want to wear before because I thought they were too tight fit amazingly well if not a bit baggy.  I am down 2 sizes in pants (44 to a 40)!  My first day back to work I am wearing clothes I have not worn in years because they didnt fit.
Topic: RE: Back to work?
I have a desk job as well.  I took 4 weeks off because the company allowed it as sick days to recover from major surgery.  While the break from work was nice, I think 2 weeks would have been the shortest time I would have done.  After 1 week I was feeling better but I would still get tired easily.

I have an hour commute 1 way to work, and I chose a Dr local to work for all the visits I would need.  For my 1 week follow up I was able to drive to work, stop in and say hello for about 30 min and then I felt like I needed a nap.  I was drained.  I go back to work on Tuesday and for the last week have been a little stir crazy at home.
Topic: RE: choice
as had been said before, no rerouting of the insides, less side effects (dumping syndrom), same results in the end.  I also like the feeling of not feeling hungry.  Dont like the possible leak issue but I am following my Dr's plan so that shouldnt be an issue.
Topic: RE: How far is ur gym?
My first location is right in my house.  My wife and I invested in a treadclimber (great cardio workout, low impact, and doubles as a treadmill for walking) and a total gym (craigslist for cheap) so we really limit the excuses.  My second option is pretty close to home, maybe 2 miles.  I am a firm beliver that if you dont like the facility you wont go, if you have to travel too long to get there you wont go.  But then again I am lazy
Topic: RE: HMO and plastic surgery
for mine they will only cover it if is detrimental to daily life (aka a large large amount of it) or if it is getting infected.
Topic: RE: i think im losing interest
what makes you say that?
Topic: RE: 2 weeks out
Remember that the lower the amount of weight you have to lose the harder it is to come off.  Try to look at it as a percentage.  you lost 10 pounds of the 80ish you wanted to lose.  That is about 12.5% in a single week. Another thing to look at is measurements.  I take weekly measurements with the hope that if I dont see much movement on the scale I will in the tape.
Topic: RE: Confessional
Do 3 hail proteins and you shall be forgiven.  (sorry to anyone that offended, wasnt trying to be offensive)

Dont be so hard on yourself.  Any restrictive diet is hard to do long term.  As long as you watch the calories that are coming in and the calories that are going out and keep them at the levels YOU want then your fine.  Allow yourself some "treats" in your diet, just plan for them.  Know you want to have a chicken nugget for dinner, find the info on it and adjust the rest of the day so it fits in.
Topic: RE: stomach size
my surgeon used a device to help him set the size and then told me what the size was after the surgery.  Come to think of it, I believe he also told me in my preop consult.
Topic: RE: stomach size
My surgeon used a tool to set the size and informed me what it was after the surgery.  2oz capacity for me.
Topic: RE: Decided To take the easy way out!
Good luck, it really is hard to lose and keep the weight off if your not ready to make the needed changes in your life.  Those changes dont have to include surgery, its more about the mental aspect of how you look at food.  Even surgery cannot help those who do not address the mental portion of things.
Topic: RE: my meal is what?!?
Just started the full liquid diet today.  After 1 week on a clear liquid diet I am happy to get to add in cream based soups and all sorts of good tasting liquids.  I was amazed that my meal size is just under 1/4 cup.  That just floors me right now.  Not that I am still hungry and want more food, and I knew my sleeve size is 2 oz.  I guess just actually seeing it measured out for a change really sinks it in.  I wasnt measuring out my liquids before since I would just sip all day long.

We went to Olive Garden today to celebrate with some soup.  I kept taking a little bit of broth from my wife's bowl and she did the soup, salad, and breadsticks.  She commented afterwards that she felt like a pig eating her normal amount (2 breadsticks, a salad, and 2 bowls of soup) compared to what I had.  Now mind you, preop I would easily eat 2x the amount of food she did.  With a 2 oz. meal I think I might give my daughter an eating complex if she ever compared herself to me, hopefully that doesnt happen.

It is just so amazing what this journey is showing me, and changing in my mind and I am only 1 week post op.  I can't wait to see what comes next.

Topic: RE: Prilosec, Pepcid AC?
In addition to any acid, I was told by my doc that it creates a protective coating on the stomach.  I was given a 2 month Rx for them and that do that for everyone, heartburn or not.
Topic: RE: UNJURY???????
so far I have only mixed it with some good chicken broth.  Soon I will be trying it with strawberry yougart.  The stronger the flavor of what you put it in the less likely you should be to taste it unless you are one of those people that can really taste protein powder (like my wife).
Topic: RE: Pre-op Sleep Apnea Test Question
Even if it is going to be for a short time, you can rent a machine monthly as needed.  Since what is happening is you actually stop breathing while you sleep you can understand why they would be concerned.  For your own side of it getting a good night's sleep is next to impossible with sleep apnea so your body wouldnt get the good rest it needs to recover.  Not to mention the possible impacts on your heart that it can have.
