Topic: RE: Re-sleeving
I've never heard of that.  I know they can do some stuff to make it bigger - if someone gets a stricture for instance....but re-sleeve.....that's a first.

I'm pretty certain you are stuck with whatever size they made it.

Topic: RE: Food Weakness
Mine......would be hot wings or "taco truck" tacos.  You know the cheap ones....with just meat, onions, cilantro, and hot sauce....yeah I can eat like 10 of them or probably 30-40 wings in a sitting.

I'm really not much of a sweets person....but if I had to pick probably ice cream is my sweet weakness.

For Thanksgiving.....stuffing or pecan pie would be the hardest for me to resist.
Topic: RE: My wife finally got a surgery date!
Very happy for you!  I'm glad she "came around" and she will have an awesome sleeve mentor in you to help her with any struggles.

EDIT:  I just saw the surgery date.  What a great Christmas present!  It's going to make for a memorable holiday....that's for sure!
Topic: RE: NSV:Kinda....I think........Motorcycle Related
HAHAHA.....nice one Frisco!  I shared this post with a friend of mine that is also a biker and he got a kick out of it.  He said it is sooooo true.

He said people are usually scared of people on bikes in general.  Maybe you just give off a more friendly aura now?  Since you are happier with yourself.....it just gives off the positive vibes!

Topic: RE: X-Post: Centrum Multivitamin too large?
No real insight here.  I can't take regular full size vitamins now (and im not sleeved).  They always make me feel nauseous....even with food.  I can't even imagine how much worse it would be with a smaller stomach.

I currently am taking the nasty orange chewable ones you said you didn't like.   I don't mind them and will probably continue with them after surgery.

I've heard good things about the Bariatric Advantage brand of chewables.
Topic: RE: TV GLUTTONY - yuck
I noticed that too!  If you watch the earlier episodes to now.....both Adam and Guy are both much bigger now.

I guess if its your job to eat.....I dunno.  Hopefully once their show ends or something they can lose it.
Topic: RE: Please tell me it's OK
Ah excellent point.  Thanks for pointing that out!  Good idea really.
Topic: RE: I need the "don't worry you will feel restriction soon" pep talk!
Liquids go right through you.  Plus....your stomach is essentially NUMB right now.  It's not feeling much of anything.

I'm not sleeved yet....but from what I have read....wait until you start to eat real food....particularly dense protein and see how much of THAT you can eat.  You should feel something then.
Topic: RE: Today is my day!
Get er done!   You will be fine.  Enjoy the drugs!
Topic: RE: What determines how long you stay in the hospital after surgery?
Most people stay 1-2 days after surgery.

Keep in mind also......you will LIKELY be pretty high on pain medication so hopefully you have someone to take you to and from the hospital.  You also will possibly have to stop a few times on the way home to stretch your legs and move so you don't get a blood clot.
Topic: RE: What determines how long you stay in the hospital after surgery?
That is unusual.....not usually an outpatient type procedure.

They need to do the surgery, have you wake up and somewhat recover from anesthesia, then they usually like to make sure you can keep fluids down and maybe do a leak test.

Kinda hard to do all that in 1 day, but maybe.  I dunno....just seems very rushed.
Topic: RE: thank god for that stuck feeling it almost got me this time
How far out are you?  Your surgery date says it was today!!

Peanut butter can be a ***** to eat even without surgery.  I know if I eat any of it now I feel like I have to drink A LOT of fluid to get it down.  I'm surprised its allowed in your plan.
Topic: RE: Please tell me it's OK
Are you pre op or post op?  If your surgery date listed is correct you are pre op.  Diet soda isn't a problem then but you really should be "practicing" and weaning yourself off it for post-op.

Second....they make you drink through a straw pre-op?  What a wierd rule.
Topic: RE: My cpap is going to cause a problem postop, isn't it?
I didn't think it was possible to swallow air unless you are eating or drinking at the time?  Otherwise the valve on your throat closes and all the air you take in goes to your lungs?
Topic: RE: Feeling Guilty
Sorry to hear that. :(

I would definitely give the appeal route a shot first.  It might take a month or so....but if it saves you 10-20k....probably worth it!

As far as giving a conventional diet another shot....I will say that once you have made the decision to pursue WLS....its very hard to commit to another traditional diet.  You always think.....I can just get WLS if I can't do it....so the motivation isnt' really there.

However, if you feel you can do it....and you truly have no co morbidities...go for it.  Most if not all people getting WLS have numerous co-morbidities that are truly sucking their life away and need WLS to save their lives.  If you feel you have the time to commit to giving it another shot....why not?
Topic: RE: approved by medical group?
Thanks Carmelita!  Your posts have always been very helpful to me.

I feel I know so much about this surgery - but its all "knowledge" that hasn't been applied yet.  I'm anxious to get this going and start applying all the great advice I've soaked up.
Topic: RE: approved by medical group?
Thanks for the info!  We are close....I am in San Mateo County.  I don't have an official "date" yet...need to call next week and arrange something in January.  The coordinator said January was wide open.

They did have one spot available still in 2011 on Dec 15th....but I have a pretty busy holiday season planned....lots of driving and it wouldn't work.  Plus....I am expected at a baptism on Dec 17th.....not sure if I would be up for getting discharged and driving straight to the church.  LOL!!

My approval said that it was good until the middle of February, so I'm good.

They do surgery on Tues/Thurs so I am really hoping for Jan 3rd or 5th.

My approval for Blue Shield HMO took about 2 weeks after submittal....how long have u been waiting for yours?
Topic: RE: On the Verge of Crying again!
I completely agree.  Stalls are often broken by a change.  Changing calories for a few days or a change to your exercise routine should help break it.

If you walk....try biking if you can.  If you bike....maybe switch to swimming.  Give some resistance exercises a try....you can even do it with body weight (push ups, situps, pull ups, squats, etc).

Make sure you aren't eating anything that might cause a stall.....some people get sensitive to dairy or other foods.  And of course....an adequate amount of water.

Topic: RE: approved by medical group?
Thanks Jen....that is pretty much what I am being told now.   Just unusual that with the exact same medical group......they work that way with Blue Shield and a different way with Health Net.   At least on my end.

Strange....
Topic: RE: approved by medical group?
So I know the answer to this is that I should just call my insurance company - but I thought I'd throw this question out to the OH community.

So with my old insurance (Health Net HMO) I was told by my medical group and the surgery coordinator that it had to be approved by the actual insurance.  I got a letter from the medical group saying basically "sorry we aren't in charge of approving this - its been sent to your insurance for approval".  I was then denied twice by them.

Then insurance change to (Blue Shield HMO) and resubmitted.  This time the surgery coordinator said that its just up to my medical group and if they approve it....then its ok with Blue Shield HMO.  Sure enough....this time I get an approval letter from my medical group....and haven't gotten anything from the insurance company.

I know it sounds wierd....but has anyone heard of that?  The medical group gets to approve it and not the insurance company?  And why is it this way with Blue Shield HMO and not Health Net at the exact same place?  LOL.

I'm just frazzled after waiting so long I want to make sure all the t's are crossed and i's dotted.  Yes, I will call Blue Shield first thing Monday....but until then....anyone encountered something like this?  I just don't want to go through everything, get sleeved, then get a giant bill saying....."uhh yeah you weren't REALLY approved sucker".

Topic: RE: What is the best exercise for your underarms and inner thighs?
Well - to be honest there is no way to "spot" lose in a certain place.  All you can really do is work on the muscle tone under neath.  I think you knew that...but just thought I would make sure.

The best exercise to tone your triceps (imo) are the normal tricep extensions.  You can do this from a lat machine.....just stand with the bar in front of you, elbows at your side, and push down using only your triceps....no leaning on the bar, elbows stay at your side.  You can also lie on a bench with two dumbells in your hands parallel to your body.  Lay down and then bring the dumbells near your ears and then extend using only your tris.  Ack....my description probably sucks.  You can google tricep extensions and it should have a demo.

For your thighs, they have special machines (leg abductor) that supposedly work your inner thigh.  I think they are a bunch of crap.  The best exercises for your legs are usually body weight exercises if you can do them.   Things like scissor kicks, leg lifts, body weight squats, etc.  That particular area is hard to spot train.....but you can do exercises that will help your entire lower body and they will tone your thighs too.

Hell.....good ole pushups will do wonders for your upper arms too.  I used to be a gym rat when I played football....but I'm a big time believer now in using your own body weight to exercise.  Pull ups, push ups, running, body weight squats, circuits....those will kick your ass just as much as lifting heavy will.

Sorry probably more of an answer than you were looking for but good luck!

Topic: RE: Frisco-Teriyaki Chicken Thigh Zucchini
Yeah I am a breast guy too.......but the thighs are generally a lot more juicy.

That looks amazing.  What was the glaze?
Topic: RE: guess who got approved today?
Thank you everyone!  This forum has been incredibly helpful.....not only in the information gained but also with a daily reminder that it was worth it to stick it out.

You guys rock!
Topic: RE: I know it's almost Thanksgiving, but my friend sent me some Halloween Photos...
Lookin great!!!!

On a side note........wasn't that duct tape painful to get off?
Topic: RE: guess who got approved today?
This guy!!!! WOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What great news.  I called the surgery coordinator for an update since my packet was sent in two weeks ago.  I was preparing myself for the "we don't know anything yet" speech but nope......approved 1st try with new insurance.  Blue Shield of CA.....I love ya.

11 months, 2 appeals, 2 insurance companies.....finally.

It looks like I will be getting sleeved sometime in early January.  I sure hope the Mayans were wrong about 2012.....I want to spend at least a few days at goal weight.  Maybe I can make it.
