Topic: RE: Making a choice from sleeve to re-sleeve or RNY?
I have not been through this, so I can't offer advice. But I'm curious about some things. What do you think was the reason you didn't do as well as others with the sleeve? What was your start weight, current weight, goal weight? Do you feel a re-sleeve or RNY will give you something the sleeve didn't? I'm genuinely asking because others may be in your shoes or may end up there.

Re-sleeves are rare from what I've read. They can be complicated to do. What about the DS? That way you get to keep the sleeve you have but the switch may give you the extra oomph you need.

Do you feel you've really changed your eating habits? That's one of the hardest, but most important parts, of any weight loss surgery.

Good luck with your decision!

Topic: RE: Help! 10 months out and stopped loosing
I agree with sleevegirl. This isn't easy, especially as we get smaller and smaller, our bodies need less calories to maintain their base functions. ANd that means you have to increase the calorie deficit. There's two ways: take in less calories or burn more calories. Whichever you chose (or a combo), you have to make it stick for the longer term, too. For example, if you take on some crazy exercise routine, then consider that you'll have to maintain that forever too. So I suggest taking very practical, achievable steps. Lower your intake, especially of carbs (which can just cause you to want more carbs) and move more. Make sure you plenty of fluids. I try to take in 80-100 oz a day.

My Fitness Pal is a great site for tracking. Give it a try.

There may be benefits to working on the mental side of things as well. Counseling or therapy can help you get to the bottom of why you eat when you really shouldn't. I've been doing it for quite some time and while it's not a magic bullet, it's helped me a lot.

You have to want this. The ball's in your court and this can be done. But you've got to remove the hurdles in front of you... and they are all yours to control. You can do it!

Good luck!

Topic: RE: Shedding Inches-how often to measure?
I measured monthly. Some months I had good weight loss and others not as much. Some months I had good inches lost, others not as much. But both measurements help keep things in perspective!

Topic: RE: Question about mushies- help
Here's the mushies plan I used and have posted before... I would drop the carby items after you get to soft or regular foods. I would also skip the mashed potatoes your doc recommended. They don't contain any protein and could stall your weight loss.

I had to blenderize everything for my mushy phase. Added enough liquids so that the end result was of applesauce consistency and slid off a spoon. Here's what I ate.

egg salad
scrambled eggs
tuna salad
chicken salad (use canned chicken since it's super soft)
chili
baked fish
laughing cow cheese wedges
ff refried beans with a little melted cheese
cottage cheese
ricotta cheese
the lowest carb cream soups I could find and then I added protein powder to them
ff plain greek yogurt (added a little splenda and cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice)
no sugar added applesauce
sugar free pudding
still used protein shakes, broth and other liquids to supplement mushies

I got creative with the flavors I added to things. I used different spices and liquids to switch it up. I must have made my chicken salad ten different ways: ff mayo, greek yogurt, dry hidden valley ranch seasoning, dry mustard seasoning, mild buffalo sauce, ff sour cream, etc.

Hope this helps!

I know you've had some trouble - I don't wish that on anyone and I certainly don't want to discount your experience.  I encourage people to share the good and the bad.

I sincerely hope, though, that you thought about follow up care and talked with your PCP about this BEFORE getting surgery.  This should happen REGARDLESS of where you have your surgery - USA or otherwise.

Topic: RE: Nut says... No protein shakes!
This doesn't even sound like a good MAINTENANCE plan to me, much less a WEIGHT LOSS phase plan. I'd say run for the hills.

My surgeon and NUT were also pushing to incorporate grains and fruit (and lots of milk) into my diet after 6 weeks post op. But I know my body and I listened to the VETS here and I stayed low low carb for weight loss. Now that I'm in maintenance, I still eat mainly protein, with some complex carbs thrown in. I simply cannot go back to a life of eating mashed potatoes and fruits and starches like I used to. That's part of what got me fat.

Plus, most of teh things you mention are sliders. They might make you feel full early out from surgery, but by 6 months or a year, they'll slide right through, leaving you less than satisfied/full.

I STILL drink protein shakes today. They help me keep my protein up, which helps my muscle recovery with all the exercise I do.

You gotta do what's right for you. They are medical professionals, not know-it-alls. Keep researching. You are right to question this.

I would go (unless the day comes and you feel like completely crap). I wouldn't worry too much about the eating part. You can just say that you aren't feeling well or are on a strict diet (both true). It's your friend's wedding and I think you will both be glad if you are there. Have fun!

Topic: RE: Woman question - endometriosis & nuva ring
I have used the Nuvaring for years. The first few months were a little off, but it settled down quickly. Every once in awhile, I won't have any period at all (scares the crap outta me and I usually take a prego test just to confirm I'm not). And then the next month I might start to bleed early. But overall, I love the NR and my periods are super light.

Tough love coming... you can't expect instant results after spending years being obese.  The weight WILL come off, but it's not gonna happen overnight.

You DO know what to do.... lots of protein and fluids... really low carbs... follow the plan and you'll succeed!

Topic: RE: Having a difficult time eatting ( VETs sound in)
The lack of nutrition is likely driving the tiredness.  So you have to find a way to eat.  It's almost like medicine at this point - fuel for your body.  Try different foods in different forms with different flavors to see if some things work better than others.

Get your body moving too.  I know this sounds impossible since you are tired, but exercise causes blood flow increases which can help with the tiredness.  And may drive you to have some hunger feelings because your body will want fuel to help it exercise.  A good cycle.  Try it.

Good luck.

Topic: RE: weight loss stalled and I'm scared
It's pretty normal to have stalls and gains during this process.  Be sure you are drinking enough fluids.  Here's the science behind stalls and small gains:

Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet.

As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a sabertooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.

Topic: RE: Advice Please!!!
OK, first, take a deep breath.  Next, take a sip.  Sipping is your full time job right now.  You are right to be concerned about not getting in enough.

What are you drinking?  If it's anything that has any thickness to it at all, water it down with water or milk immediately.  Hydration should come before protein at this stage, so if you set protein aside until you can get in more hydration (water, broth, etc), then do it.

I had a ton of internal swelling after my surgery so I was the same way.  Literally, I feel your pain.  But you have to keep sipping.  Take teeny tiny sips almost constantly.  If they hurt, take a smaller sip.  But you have to get hydrated.

Now, if you become dehydrated and need fluids, go to the ER.  I had to go twice after surgery.  This is pretty serious stuff we're talking here, so it's not worth waiting if you are truly dehyrated and can't get enough in by sipping.

And finally, it's total crap that your doc won't talk to you until your appt on Tuesday.  Any surgeon who is worth anything will take your calls day or night if it's an emergency.

And finally, having been in your shoes, hang in there.  It most definitely does get better!
