Hello Members,

On a daily basis we get calls from members in desperate need of surgeons that will accept Medicaid and or Medicare for Bariatric surgery.  It breaks our hearts when we have to say "we don't know of any surgeons in your state we can refer you to".  Can you please help us? If you know of any surgeons in your state that accepts Medicaid and or Medicare, will you list their:

Name

If they accept Medicare and or Medicaid

Phone number

Facility

Address

This list will remain here for our members to access and use. Thank you so much!!! ObesityHelp,

Hi, my name is Rana and I just moved to Huntsville last May.  I've seen Dr. Malipur for a consultation and I've been to a couple support groups at HHosp.  I am 45 and need to lose about 70-80 lbs, which means I'm not far from being just at 35 BMI. If I lose 10 more pounds before surgery I will not be eligible.   Last night at the support group, I spoke with Linda Steakly, the bariatric nutritionalist and she suggested that I consider Lap Band instead of RNY.  My father has osteoporosis, so I am concerned about getting osteoporosis down the road - because of the malabsorption. What surgery did you have?  I think Dr. Malipur does mostly RNY - I'm not sure how many Lap Band he does.  Can you lend me any information about the issues I've mentioned?  I am still in the 6 mo. Dr/Nutritioanal visit stage.  I will be finished in April - probably could be okayed by insurance by June.  What are your thoughts? Thanks, Rana

Hi Rana, Thanks for writing. I had the RNY, and I have not had any problems. This past tuesday,2-5-08 I saw Dr. Mailapur for my 3 month checkup  and I have lost 42% of my body fat. With the gastric bypass you will not absorb all of the nutrients that you eat, so this is why it is so important to get the calcium that you need on a daily basis. If you do everything you are supposed to do and take the necessary suppliments then you should not get osteoporosis. You will have to take this the rest of your life. I weighed in at 224 pounds and 31/2 months later I weigh 181 pounds (43) pounds. Dr. Mailapur's goal for me is 135 pounds, so this is only 89 pounds that he wants me to lose. I never have regreted having the RNY or haveing Dr. Mailapur as my surgeon. He is wonderful and honest and caring!!!!! I RNY can be for you to even if it is just 80 pounds. I choice you make is a hard one , but " WELL WORTH IT ALL".  Take care and keep me up to date. Angel Holloway aka... Wildblue Angel

Hi, I live in Ms. I am 54 and my sister 60. We both put on weight after the death of our grandmother 20 years ago. I was 36 and she was 42. Up until this time,  I weighed 130 and I am 5' 8" and now weigh 250-260 (I was over 300. I lost over 50 pounds just dieting) but I am stuck. I go back and forth with the same 10 pounds. I am a medical trnascriptionist and I work at home. I sit all night (third shift) I even do work for physicians who do the lap band and the procedure is really minor compared bypass. My sister needs to lose about 70 pounds she has lost 30 pounds over the last 3 months on Atkins but is at a standstill. I have MEDICARE ONLY. I HAVE TOO MUCH MONEY FOR MEDICAID. LMAO. LOL. SHE HAS TRI-CARE WITH RETIRED GOVERNMENT WORKERS. SHe could probably afford to pay cash. One doctor in dallas wants 10,000. Can someone telll me what my copay would be and how much she would pay if he does not take tricare. We will be doing this together. WE LIVED IN B'HAM FOR YEARS AND RETIRED TO OUR HOMETOWN IN MS. OUR NIECE IS A STUDENT AT UAB AND OUR OTHER SISTER IS A HISTORY PROFESSOR AT A PRIVATE COLLEGE IN B'AHM. WE KNOW OUR WAY AROUND HUNTSVILLE. AND WE WILL GO WHERE EVER WE NEED TO GO. I HAVE DEVELOPED HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. I have severe arthritis in my left foot and knee. (Lose weight or surgery) I have 3 bulging disc and all this came with weight gain. Would love to hear from anyone who can help me with advice. thanks Patti in Philadelphia, MS

Although Dr. Freeman is very likable and charismatic, be careful about being talked into having procedures that you really dont need.  He told me I all sorts of things about the RNY that I had already had, how it was going to kill me, I would get peritonitis, and I was very sick.  I did not feel sick, and after I got my records, there was nothing listed concerning all of the scare tactics he said I had.
What is boils down to is that I allowed him to talk me into having a surgery I did not need or even really want.  It was my fault for not having all of the information.  I am afraid that my poor decision to have a surgery he recommended will cause me not to be able to have a RNY-DS. I am hoping that is not the case, but it could very well be.  Because of my poor choices and pressure, my hopes for being a normal weight may have vanished.

Just be informed, and do not be swayed by his personality.  If you do indeed need/want surgery, go for it.  If it is something else, please get a second opinion!
Actually, this is good advice for any surgeon.

KIM,

THANKS FOR THE INFO. My sister and I have an appointment on the 18th of May with Dr. Freeman. YEAH! This super nice lady called from his office shortly after I emailed them and fortunately my sister was at my house and the rest is history. I have to pay 350.00 co-pay with medicare and as always my sister's insurance pays 100% Lucky woman.
Now that I have the appointment, I am confused on bypass or lap band? Since we live so far away it is about a 4-5 hour drive.
I think I should do bypass but since she ishaving lap band I am afraid we should stick to the same schedule. I DO NOT DRIVE. LOL. I AM 54 AND AFTER MY HYSTERECTOMY, I BECAME DRIVE-A-PHOBIC. I am so excited. Thanks to all of you for your help. Happy dieting ladies and gentlemen.

Patti in MSA round of applause to all of you brave people.

I am currently networking with all of the bariatric coordinators for all of the local hosptials/surgeons is the Birmingham, AL and surrounding area and have sent this link message out to each of them to respond with their information for you.  Several of them do particiapate and are Centers of Excellence or in the process and hopefully they can respond.  If not, I have their information or will get it and come back and post it for them.   Good luck. In having one of those insurance I have yet to find a plastic surgeon that will do the plastics that I need done and wait for medicare to pay them. I was told by 2 that I would have to pay for the suirgeries and wait for medicare to pay me back. Being on a fixed income will never allow me to pay the amount of money they are asking me to pay and so I feel I am stuck in this body of loose skin all over forever and my wls journey is over. Does anyone know of a plastic surgeon who will not want payment up front. I have tried the plastic surgeons in Tuscaloosa where I live. LOL. Irish aka Ms Pisces
