Where I live it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter so walking outside is not always pleasant. I have joined gyms before but found it was a real hassel to fir them into my schedule. (Also, many of the Gyms are "meat markets" and I am not sure I would feel too comfortable at them. I am thinking that a treadmill might be something that I would use on a regular basis. Question: Those of you that have personal treadmills, how did you decide what to purchase? Any recommendation regarding brands or special features to look for? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks, Deanna |

She said that you need to be sure to get a motorized treadmill -- not a manual one. Beyond that, its a matter of staying motivated. A co-worker told me she got extra bells and whistles on her treadmill so she could take her pulse and play music and compete with the computer. All those things cost extra though. Our exercise instructor said that fast motivating music works just as well for most people. She also said you can find used treadmills in the newspaper or at second hand shops. These are usually lightly used because someone didn't use the machine and got rid of it. Beyond that, she didn't have any other advise other than "whatever works best for you". ~~ Judy ~~ That's a picture of my youngest grandbaby in my avatar. She is my pre-e-cious. |

LaDena Spokane Valley, WA Member Since: 08/07/06 [Latest Posts] | Post Date: 1/14/07 5:39 pm Hi Deanna, I bought a treadmill from Sears about a year ago. It's a NordicTrak one. Looks just like one from the gym. It has the fans on it....you can adjust the tension, the cushion the incline etc. It has a spot for your water bottle. It has different programs that you can save for up to 4 people. It shows the track on it. Does your pulse and respirations, tells you how many miles you've gone and how many carbs and calories you've burned. VERY nice..and VERY expensive. If I had to do it again, I probably would not have spent the money on it I did. This sucker is HUGE. It folds down, but is soooooo big that it's pretty much going to be left where it's been for the past year....in the corner of my living room. I thought, I'll get it, use it while watching t.v. and I do, not as often as I should. I really wish I could move it, because it's sort of become an eye sore and makes it to where I'm limited on how I arrange my living room. So, bottom line. If you buy one, make sure you have room for it and pretty much plan on it staying put. There are some really good treadmills out there that don't have to cost you an arm and a leg. You might even check your local classifieds. Good Luck with it. Dena |

Kat C Tuscaloosa, AL Member Since: 10/18/04 [Latest Posts] | Post Date: 1/14/07 5:39 pm I got my treadmill pre-op, so the first thing I looked for was weight capacity of 350 pounds. That requires a big motor and was very costly. Other features I looked for: widest possible track, incline feature, heart rate monitor, fan, cup holder. I also wanted one that I could fold up for storage. I also wanted big easy buttons on it, a safety-stop feature, and hand-holds or bars that came back far enough for my comfort. Gee I don't ask much huh? :-) The brand I ended up getting was Keyes (Keys? not sure on the spelling) Healthtrainer and I am VERY happy with it. I got a treadmill for many of the same reasons as you - weather, and scheduling. I wanted a real "no excuses" exercise option. It was my sole exercise for my first year or so post-op. I have been a member of my local Y for years and never went. But as my first year post-op passed and I still had some weight to lose, I knew I had to jack it up now or never. So I started going, hired a trainer to show me around, and am still using her for help with strength training. I was always intimidated by what I called the "butt floss" crowd, too. But ya know what I learned? SOME of those butt floss bunnies are former BIG big girls and they have worked HARD to get those bodies - several have shared their struggles with me and have become my best cheerleaders at the gym. Men, too. One of the bodies I admired from afar belongs to a man who lost 200 lbs over 2 years on his own. I so admire that! I am open about my surgery and get lots of support. Now I love going there & miss both teh working out and my new friends when I have to miss. NEVER woulda thought THIS would be my life a few years ago! One last thought - if they have a PLAY IT AGAIN SAM near you, that is a good source for used or reconditioned high-ticket sports items such as a treadmill, elliptical, home gym, etc. Happy treadmill shopping! Let us know what you end up with, please! |

want2bethin4me Member Since: 09/30/06 [Latest Posts] | Post Date: 1/14/07 6:10 pm I just got a horizon T95 from Dick's sporting goods. PRice with delivery was $699.00. I research brands on consumer reports and online to find which ones were recommended by price and quality. Mine folds up and is very easy to move around. I love working out on it. I am 9 weeks out and I do 45 minutes a day. An important point to look at when looking for one is the warranties. From what I hear, the motor, parts ,etc can be very expensive to replace. So i made sure I had a good warranty. Good luck on your research. |

Princess T. Licking County, OH Member Since: 08/13/06 [Latest Posts] | Post Date: 1/14/07 6:23 pm LOL, first your title is THREADMILL...lol....sorry- it caught my eye and made me laugh... Ok, here's my advice. Skip the bells and whistles. All you really need is a treadmill that is automatic (not manual), has a safety stop (mine has this little plastic thing on a rope that you clip to your clothes....if you go back to far the plastic piece pulls out and the conveyor belt stops...so no falling off the back), will track your time and your miles (so you can track your progress). The one I use (at work) tells me my average pace, my heartrate, number of calories burned, etc...but in the end, all I want to know is how long it takes for me to walk a mile.....(I'm actually going to kick it up to 1.5 miles this week). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm going to DisneyWorld!! And you're all invited to join me!! ![]() |
