She works with me and everyday she is eating then throwing everything up. she tells me it is from her sugery and she can not keep anything down. She says that beef and white meat chicken are the hardest for her to keep down. I am seeing the DR on 7/18 and can not wait to see if my insurance approves the surgery. She told me to make sure i really wanted to do the surgery because of all the problems she has. After her surgery she never really went to her surgent for a check up because he got sick and died. So she never went to anyone else. What does every one think? I tell her she should go to a surgent to get a revision because she has been gaining weight and fast. Last year she was 220 and know she is 280 and I am scared that she will be up to 400 in no time. I am also scared that when i have surgery I will be the same way in 8 to 10 years. |

Between the lack of food and malabsorption I would imagine she would be losing. It could be quite easy to get sick after eatiing if you eat too much or eat something that you should not be eating.
What do you think is going on? |

For example for breakfast she can eat a bowl of oat meal about 8 oz and then whole grain toast and an egg. She eats that between 9:00 am and 12:30 pm when i go get her for lunch. Then she will get a veggie wrap or a very large salad and soup. she will then eat that till she leaves for the day. I don't know what she eats after that. She will get sick but then get back to her desk and keep eatting so I think that is her problem. Does the new stomach ever get large again like the old stomach? |

There is a 20% risk of signifigant weight regain after wls and it sounds like your friend is falling that statistic. :( I definitely think she is eating too much food. Wls is not 'the end' of your weight loss problems - it's just a TOOL to help you lose the weight. But if you abuse it .. well, you won't have a good result. After you hit goal - you need to continue drinking the water, watching what you eat and exerising .. or at some point you will have signifigant regain. You should read 'Weight loss Surgery for Dummies' - it will give you some excellent information. If you want the RNY - then get it - but know what to expect. Everyone does not have complications etc. I got the RNY haven't had any at all and yes, I can eat meat etc..

twin0002 Toledo, OH Member Since: 11/01/04 [Latest Posts] | Post Date: 7/15/07 7:24 am I would say that she is eating too much. It does sound like she has stretched her pouch. If a person eats too much food they will get sick each time. It is very possible that this is what she is experiencing. As for you this is all a choice. If you do not want to regain any of the weight you will not if you continue to work at it. The surgery is only part of the reason you lose weight. The rest is up to you by the choices you make. If you stretch your pouch by choosing to eat more, if you get your body used to sugar again by eating a little more each time, if you start to make bad choices instead of healty ones, you will regain weight. This choice to have this surgery does not just affect you until you have reached your goal, it is with you everyday for the rest of your life. Everyday for the rest of your life you have to make good choices. Surgery alone cannot make and keep you at a healthy weight. As long as you continue to make good choices you will be fine.
It is also extremely important to continue to follow up. As you may already know malabsorption can be a big issue with this procedure. You will need to take vitamins for the rest of your life. Not to mention that by going back for check ups helps keep you accountable. You can't gain weight unless you are not eating right.
This procedure not a bad decision. It is what you make of it. It can be a wonderful life saving procedure, or for some it may be bad because they do not like the food limitations.
Best of luck to you

I know several others who have had the surgery as well and only two of them have problems with any kind of meats. I think the problems often arise from eating too much or too quickly. I only have problems when I overdo it, which is not very often. Again, the surgery is only an tool and we must learn to use it to our advantage. |

I do not understand how someone who cannot keep "anything" down has not lost significantly more weight. I want to add that you are in great hands with Dr. Bertha. I just had the pre-op class with his office and it was very comprehensive and made me feel extremely comfortable with my decision. I will say too, from what I see here, the support and information his patients receive is above average. One thing he said was if you are not willing to make the changes necessary in your diet do not have surgery. Maybe you should suggest she see Dr. Bertha just for a follow up. As far as gaining the weight down the road, if you are careful and always remember the basics I think it can be avoided. |

I also told my friend to go see him and she said said maybe. I think she will never go again and I feel sorry for her. I think she really does not care any more. I will let you know how my meeting with Dr. Bertha goes this week. |
