I just got my one-year lab results, and I'm low on Vitamins E & A.  Has anyone had that happen to them, and if so, what do you take for supplementation?  Also, will pills work?  My understanding is these are absorbed in the small intestine, so I'm wondering if supplments will even work or will I need injections. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Julie,     This is very serious; please treat it as so! Vitamin def. can cause life long lasting effects! I am not sure on the pill injection thing. I am taking a lot of different vitamin sup. all in pill form except B-12 injections. I went on Web MD and read about permentant disabilities after WLS due to vitamin deficencies! I am low in B-1, B-12, D, and Calcium. I am also experiancing some very bad syptoms right now; dizziness, lack of energy, and sometimes feel things spinning; it is effecting my life in a very negative way! I am sure you are just like me; you did this WLS to get healthier! I felt great about 6 weeks ago; and I want to get back to it. Don't let this go! Please press on, get answers, make them show you want to do to prevent serious illness ect. Good luck Julie. Please keep me posted. Sincerely, Judy R  P.S. injection are not a big deal; I givem to myself!

Thanks for the reply, Judy!  I will take this seriously, believe me!  I too have read all the effects that can come from vitamin deficiencies and will address any that come up.   My Vitamin E level was low pre-op, too, so I guess I'm not getting enough in my diet or something.  I read this is a common deficiency in the common population. I have a message in to my surgeon, so we'll see what he says.  Regardless, I started taking some Vitamin E today and will go to the store tonight to get some Vitamin A. Thanks again! Julie

Vitamins A and E are fat-soluble vitamins, and as a post-op, you *may* not be eating enought fat to absorb enough of them. I'd suggest supplementing them with a 'dry' or 'water-miscible' formulation. If you can't find them locally, try Googling 'ADEKs' or 'ScandaPharm'.
