    High protein foods...

Does anyone have any suggestions for high protein foods? I have been eating chicken, cottage cheese, beans, ect. I need some ideas to get more protein in . I am starting to hate the shakes and I would eventually like to get away from them if I can. I am still not consuming a whole lot but, I want to pack as much as I can in. Thanks in advance! :) Jamie
Try experimenting with different shake recipes.  There are thousands of different ways to make them taste delicious.   right now I'm down to just 1 shake/drink per day and I'm able to get the rest of my protein from food.  But many days I struggle still and have to resort to a second shake before bed.  Here are some of my go-to protein foods: * Carb Master Yogurt (Kroger brand) * Chili (homemade version of Wendy's chili) * Tuna salad * Sauteed shrimp * Deli-sliced deli meat * Cheesesticks * Edamame (beans only, steamed) * Dry roasted edamame * Almonds * Homemade trailmix (mostly nuts) * Chicken salad (made from canned chicken) * refried beans (w/ cheese & salsa) * Turkey Pepperoni That's all I can think of at the moment.  Pam

Pam- Thank you so much for your suggestions. They all sound SO good. I am going to get some of the items at the store tomorrow. When you saute your shrimp, what kind of oil do you use? Thanks again! Jamie
I use just a tiny bit of extra virgin olive oil (1t or so).  Since I use frozen shrimp, the water content helps to keep things from sticking.  I also got a set of flavored oils for christmas, so I've been experimenting with some garlic olive oil and chili pepper oil and others.  Gives an interesting taste. I also throw in a bit of spice -- whatever I'm in the mood for that day.  Lemon Pepper, steak seasoning, italian seasoning, garlic herb stuff.... whatever.

    • tuna
    • cottage cheese
    • swordfish
    • haddock
    • lean ground turkey
    • round steak
    • sirloin steak
    • lean ground beef
    • orange roughy

Lyden- I saw that you have crab on there. I looked at the immitation crab meat at WM the other day and it was high in carbs, do you think it is okay for us? I know that the minimal amount we eat probably won't hurt but, it has been a concern of mine. And, do you eat it raw? That is what I would do before surgery.  Thanks!! Jamie

Immitation Crab is actually Pollock - a different kind of fish.  I was thinking more like Alaskan King Crab (steamed)   For 1 leg (4 oz) you get: 26 grams protein 0 carbs 130 calories Not too bad, huh!

Tuna is high on protein.  You can also take your protein and mix it with yogurt.  I eat Special K protein plus with skim plus for breakfast and that is about 20 grams of protein.

How much do you mix with it? I tried the scoop of protein with about 10 oz of Crystal Light and ICK!!! I was afraid to try it with my yogurt. Did I maybe use too much? What protein do you mix with it? Thanks!! Jamie
I did this at work where I had the strawberry GNC pro performance protein.  I mixed one scoop of strawberry protein powder with strawberry yogurt.  It helped get the protein powder down.  You could probably try it with some plain yogurt as well.

go to www.whfoods.com and they've compiled a listing of the 55 most protein dense foods available. Veggies are there too. You'll have to look a little bit, but I know this chart is on that list. Cod is the #1 protein dense food. Dave

Try shrimp.  18 grams of protein in 3 oz.  They're soft and moist and very digestible.  You can make shrimp ****tail by making your own ****tail sauce using Heinz One Carb Ketchup and ground horseradish.  Yum!  If you're still on soft food or puree, this works too.  Just pulse it in a blender or magic bullet.  I eat shrimp or fish most days now.  Meat doesn't agree with me yet.  My favorite for fish is to put a couple of ounces of Newman's Own Mango Salsa on a filet and bake it.  Fish is very digestible too.

I like to get frozen cooked shrimp and thaw it.  Then with a touch of olive oil and garlic and onion or any other favorite seasoning, sautee it in a skillet or grill in on my foreman grill.  Lots of protein and very low in calories. I do the same with scallops,  and  Tilapia fish. Missy

Hi Jamie I am only 6 days post op but I read the Book by Susan Maria Leach it's called Before & After She gives such really good ideas. Lots of recipes as well as a good read. She gives you links & info on ingredients. All the recipes seem fairly easy. Before surgery I also purchased a sample pack from her web site. I had one of the protein drinks today (chocolate peanutbutter I believe) put it in the shaker ,I got with the sample pack, put some skim plus milk and a few ice cubes and shook it before every sip. Let me tell you it was yummy. My son who drinks protein shakes, when he lifts weights, fixed it for me and he said mix it with the milk mom they are terrible either way but slightly better with the milk. I sipped it and was amazed made him try it he was shocked Wow mom this is nothing like I have ever had. So give some different shakes a try her web site is wwwBariatricEating.com. Good luck honey. Hope it helps a bit (sorry such a long post) Jerryshuggs

some of my simple favorites are: 1 cup skim milk = 8 protein 1 medium egg w/ 1/2 slice american cheese melted on top = 9.1 protein 1 medium egg w/ 1/2 piece of turkey sausage = 9.25 protein 6 tablespoons McCormick white chicken chili = 12.38 protein fish is also great (pretty much any kind of fish packs in the protein) Here are some websites that contain high protein food suggetions along with their protein count: http://healthandfitness.com/bbs/forum/messages/8753.html http://www.highproteinfoods.net/ http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whattoeat/a/highproteinfood .htm Hope that helps!

O.k., know in advance that before surgery a home-made meal to me was one served in a restaurant instead of getting through the drive-thru window.  I am only 10 days post-op so I am already almost giddy to get to have real food again.  I have noticed in all the food suggestions ham is never mentioned.  Is it ok to eat ham after RNY?
