Hey friends,  I am having surgery on Mon AM(6-9) and have been faithfully doing the pre op two week slimfast.  I weighed in at the Dr's Wed and had only lost 4 lbs.  That was super surprising to me.  I normally drop lbs fast when I diet.  Thing is, I haven't been on a diet since being diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome, and have been told it can be very hard to lose weight with it.  For those of you who have it and have had surgery already, have you had any trouble?  Has your weight loss been slower than you expected? Also oddly enough, I have been experiencing some constipation with fasting.  I drink tons of water and only drink my slimfast 5x a day and one protein bar...does that seem normal? I appreciate your thoughts/advice, this is my first post but I have been reading the boards.  It's helped me prepare for the big day! Cheers,  Stacie

hi stacie, yes i am one of the many that have pcos also. i am only 2 1/2 months out, but i cna share my experience thus far. surgery day i was 244 and as of this morning i am 197. so right around 50lbs. i have noticed thats right in the middle as far as weight loss, some people have lost a lot more and a few have lost a little less. i am a slower looser. however it really depends on your preop weight. i will also say after surgery i was having period issues. but i got something called the implanon (its a birthcontrol) anyways its been great it has made me regular again, with no side effects. good luc. and yea i can also say preop i couldnt loose weight very easily.

Hey Stacie, I have PCOS and had a lap RNY in January.   I struggled with weight loss before the surgery but have been a steady looser since then and am down 70lbs in 5 months.  Just remember that everybody is different and some people do loose faster than others depending on their start weight.  Always keep in mind that you took years to put on the extra lbs and that it's going to take a while to loose it.   You will probably notice a change in your period but a good one.  I have less pain and moodiness.   My Dr explained to me that the surgery & PCOS are under a study by two different universities right now and it is believed that it is a successful tool in battling this syndrome.

Good morning!  First, off let me wish you the best of luck on your surgery that is coming up Monday!  I'm sending you good vibes for a quick and healthy recovery.  My surgery is in two weeks so I'm still pre-op... but I'm getting more excited and nervous by the day! I too, have PCOS, diagnosed several years ago.  My problem is not losing weight as much as maintaining and keeping off the weight.  Which I can't for sure say that I attribute to the PCOS.  It could be part of it, but I honestly don't know... the doc has never really said.  The times that I have acheived a decent weight loss it has come off pretty quickly... but that was with huge modifications on my part.  The problem is that when I reach a certain point... 30-40 pounds, then I completely stall and it all comes back.  My doc is very confident that with a substantial weight loss things will level off and hopefully things will start to get back to normal.  I can only hope! Best of luck to you! :)

I have /or had PCOS and lost 150 lbs.  My starting weight was 305 and I now stay between 150 - 155 lbs.  I had no problem loosing the weight.  My 2 year surgiverary will be in Sept., in about 3 months.  I never had a plateau through my whole weight loss, my body just stopped loosing when I reached 150 lbs.  It was great!  So , for me having PCOS didn't stall my loss at all!  Good luck to you!

HI STACIE!  Welcome to the WLS club.  I have PCOS, have been dxed with it since I was 18 years old.  I also had surgery in January and I am down 81 lbs in about 4 1/2 mths so I'd say I am doing well.  I am also exercising 5 to 6 days a week, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours a day.  Exercise is important for all of us, but it can really help get the insulin resistance that goes along with PCOS sometimes under control.  I have noticed a HUGE reduction in the hair issue, but some don't, some actually notice an increase.  But I feel SO much better after having lost 81lbs.  I think this surgery fixes us a bit, because the most I could lose before surgery was like 30lbs and then I plateaued. I did not plateau until the last few weeks and its still not a real plateau because I am still losing, just a little slower(I added more carbs in my diet per my NUT...I am slowly pushing it back down and seeing a better loss).  OH...big NEWS...period has been regular as clockwork since surgery, even though i am on depo and am not supposed to get one on this shot...but..I do.  I could not be more thrilled..

Thanks for asking this question. I had surgery on monday and also have pcos but never thought to ask about this. My gyn is actually who suggested it thinking it would help me and was one of my only options left to lose the weight after everything else i tried.  I was only able to lose 3lbs prior to surgery.  GOOD LUCK !!!
