When I had my RNY, my surgeon's instructions were no beef/red meat for a year.  I have cut out beef, pork and lamb.  It's been nine months and I've pretty much scrupulously avoided all three. I know this is not true of everyone.  I also know that not everyone considers pork and lamb to be red meat. What do you eat?  Do you have trouble digesting beef, pork, or lamb?

I'm 5 weeks out and I haven't been restricted any lean meat. I have had a little pork and a little beef. It does feel different when I'm digesting it. It doesn't hurt or anything and I do intend to make different choices in the future but I won't say absolutely no red meat though.

I eat beef and pork regularly; I do not care for lamb, so have not tried it.  I do not have any problems digesting beef and pork, and I'm 2 1/2+ years post-op.  I did not have a restriction from my surgeon about limiting beef and red meat from my diet, as long as my pouch could tolerate it.  It probably took 6-9 months before I could comfortably eat these denser types of proteins.  Before that, I ate mostly chicken and fish, plus low-fat dairy, which is a great source of protein (unless you are lactose intolerant!).   I'd be interested in the reason for this component of your surgeon's protocol, especially since lean cuts of these meats are such great sources of protein.  But each surgeon is different, and they tend to have pretty good reasons for their particular protocols, based on their experience.  Good luck on your continuing journey -  Kellie

I am only 4 weeks out and have been pureeing beef brisket, pork ribs, and eating 90% lean burger patties and so far no problems.  I went for my check up yesterday and my NUT said if I can tolerate it I can eat it.

Hey there surgery bud! My doc never said no beef/red meat. I've been eating it since a few weeks out. I don't eat lamb, but I haven't had any trouble with any of the meat I eat (except deli meats). I've had ground beef (of varying degrees of fat), steaks, pork chops, ham, chicken breasts & thighs, all different kinds of fish, beef roasts to name a few off the top of my head. vicki

I pretty much stick with ground turkey, turkey, chicken. The few times I tried beef rib, pork chop or steak and stew meat it was too tuff and got stuck.  Unless I cook it myself and/or order it med rare, it is hard on my pouch.  Ground beef is okay though but I prefer ground turkey these days. After so long I just don't miss it.

Huh? Beef is one of the most nutritious foods on the planet, especially for menstruating women of childbearing age and even MORE SO if such a woman has even the slightest degree of protein malabsorption.  For me it's a heck of a lot easier to digest than chicken, that's for sure!

I wasn't instructed to not eat red meat for a year.  I tried it at about 9 months and found that I CAN'T tolerate it.  I can do pork, poultry, fish & meat replacements (veggie burger).  NO red meat of any kind ~ even a heavily ground beef.  For example meatballs ~ I can do my Dad's pork meatballs but not ones he makes with beef.  It's AWFUL as I crave red meat on occasion and usually give in and try it just to have it get stuck.  I end up in pain for a good 2 hours.  I've finally stopped trying.

Hi all! New here. Had my surgery 2/4/08. I have had absolutely no issues with food. I haven't found anything that I can't eat. I have never gotten anything "stuck". I have "dumped" when I ate too fast, or soon after drinking water. Looking to forward chatting with everyone! Diane

I was allowd any animal protein I could tolerate after about 8 weeks, but was encouraged to limit them to 3-5 servings a week. No problem there. I'm not a big fan of them. I can tolerate them as long as they are very moist and tender. Pressure cooking is a great way to ensure that, and it's a fast cooking method.

yep, at least 3-4 times a week. i have no problems with meat of any kinda as long as i chew the hell out of it, it goes down just like anything else. i've been trying to eat more of it to get my iron levels up as they were a bit low on my first blood workup.

I had no limitation on meat - my NUT actucally encourages eating red meat once a week for iron purposes. I eat beef (on occasion), pork (rarely, never been big on pork), red meat (typically ground beef once a week).  No troubles digesting it!

I'm almost 6 months out, and if it weren't for read meat, I wouldn't be eating meat.  I started eating steak probably at 3 months out - very small pieces and not over cooked.  I can eat burger, too, if it isn't too greasy.  Pork, I have to be careful with, but I've done OK.  I don't eat lamb. Chicken and fish are very difficult for me.  Shrimp works for me, but it's not my favorite.
