I haven't really been eager to tell anyone about my surgery since in my husband's family they never refer to his cousin by her name but instead as the 'stomach staple' one....however, the longer I live this new life the more I am realizing it is probably going to be impossible to hide. Well, I have a few friends from work who have been calling a lot wanting to get together to go out to eat and I accidently ran into one while walking yesterday (we are teachers so no one is missing me from work)...I couldn't think of any excuses so I agreed. Any suggestions on how you guys dealt with friends after the surgery? Did most of you have good experiences with your friends...? Any suggestions? I have to admit that I am really not looking forward to sitting down for a long meal...but that is how our society works....

Well, I'm anxious to hear the replies to this since I have several things coming up!  I'm having a high school choir reunion and then another get together with friends I haven't seen in several years.  At least both events are potluck!  I can at least take something I know I can live with!

well i am in the same boat as you are, i only told my husband and my mom, and one bestfriend, nobody else knows. and i plan to keep it that way. i dont want to share my surgery for personal reasons, anyways the good news is i have noticed that people didnt really start to notice my weight loss till now, 50lbs down. so when they ask you if you been loosing weight you can just say yea. i am more of a slow looser so i am actually happy about that for the fact it doesnt seem like overnight i lost weight. now we are military and last time we had a visit home was a year ago, and of course at my heaviest..so they will be pretty surprised, however i do talk to a few cousins and i will tell them i am loosing weight.

Probably 1 of the best mantras after WLS that i've found is "honesty is the best policy." Now, I want to preface that with the fact that I told just about everyone I came in contact with in the months leading up to my surgery. I see no reason to be secretive because if someone wants to judge me for doing what's best for myself, then screw them. All of my friends and family have rallied around me in support on this journey and I am thankful for that every moment of every day. That being said, my 1st social outing was interesting to say the least. I was about 5 weeks out & had just started into some serious "refunding" issues. I met a few friends @ our local Panera Bread because I knew I could get soup or tuna salad. I was down abt 25 lbs then & everyone commented on how good I was already looking. About midway through I felt the need to "refund," I just calmly as possible excused myself from the table & took care of business. I did not make a big fuss over why I was headed to the ladies room & tried to be calm when I returned to the table. Nobody seemed to think twice about it and as long as I didn't turn it into a big to-do, no-one else did either. The key is to appear calm and relaxed and not make a big deal about it. Field questions politely, but don't make the focus on you and your WLS and it will be a much more pleasant experience. I hope this helps! Good Luck!
LIFE IS GOOD!!! Good luck to everyone! EVERY WOW moment is a success!

I purposly didnt tell many people as well.  When I returned to work I got so many questions and they continue daily.  There are many that don't ask and there are others that have come straight out and say "Are you doing a no eating diet?  How are you losing al this weight?"  Depending on the question, I either answer that I'm watching what I'm eating and exercising, or like with the no eating diet question I answered "Well yes actualy, when I went out on leave I caught anorexia".  Then I smiled prettily and walked away... My point is, you will hve to adjust your answers to the manner of question.  You will definately be annoyed, but you may be less so if you decide that you will answer outright,/normal/direct questions honestly and be sarcastic/evasive to the rest...  One of my thoughts is that I will answer the questions honestly when I sense the motivation for the question is because they care, not because they're nosy. Good luck!

At first I was embarrassed to tell my firends. Now I tell everyone. Most people say good for you, some say I dont need it, others say they wnt to do it but have an excuse or say tey arent ready for that big of a committment. I think of all the people out there I have known that have died from complications of being obese and wish they had tried WLS. If my doing this helps me, AND maybe someone else sees me do it and is helped by it, then that is good karma. For those that make snide remarks..............there is always a nay sayer in the group!!  I am having ticker problems, I have copied and pasted but it isnt working, can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong, right or whatever???? a href="http://www.TickerFactory.com/weight-loss/wbd2pQo/"> http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/wbd2pQo/weight.png">>

    Tickers:
I don't know if you have gotten to your ticker production yet.
    If you haven't
find someone’s ticker and you will see above it “ticker factory”.
Click on that. If it doesn't work on one find another.
You can actually click on the actual ticker
if you are just trying to change your ticket by updating it.
This will take you to the site.
    Click “create your own ticker.”
Scroll down and click on “Weight loss”.
    It shows different tickers.
Click on one that you like.
Click next at the bottom of the page.
To get the clicker slider, choose one and click on the circle.
Click at the bottom of the page where it says “next”.
    Choose a password.
    Fill out the chart.
Click again on “next” at the bottom of the page.
    Fill out the chart.
    Click again on “next”.
Right click on the copy of your ticker.
    Click copy.
Come back to this posting site. This may be difficult.
Do it like you got to the site the first time. That works for me.
There is a blue box at the left.
    Click on “User Settings”.
You will see a box for signature.
At bottom of the page make sure you change the default editor to “plain text”.
Right click on box for signature.
If this is the first time it will be blank.
If it is the second time and you are updating your ticker click on the actual ticker in the box and paste your ticker.
Go to bottom of page and click on “enable signature”.
    Click on “save”.
That should do it. Let me know if it works for you, Jo Ann

I told everyone and had great responses from anyone I told.  I look at eating out as being more about an opportunity to be with other people and enjoy their company than about the food.  My father in law was in town about a month after my surgery and we went out to eat.  I ordered something I thought I could eat, chewed very slowly and it was fine.  Like i said, remember it is more about the company than the food.

I understand what your going thru. I haven't told anyone in my "work" life. I don't know how I'm gonna handle it when I lose more weight. So far I have lost 45lbs and people are like wow you look great and are asking questions and I'm answering them to the best of my ability w/o telling them about surgery. Poeple are beginning to make comments like" is that all your eating" and so forth. I just smile and dodge their questions about food quantity. I assume that when I lose more they will be talking about me behind my back saying that I have an eating disorder or something to that affect but whatever. I still don't know if I'm ever gonna tell. I just think that it's my business and if I never tell it will be OK. I guess to each their own. Some people say that they told everyone from the beginning and other never told so you just have to feel it out for yourself. Someone once told me that the people who were calling you fat behind your back before will be the ones trying to feed you now so I guess you can never win. I'm sure you will make the right decision for you. P&PT's.
