OK, so I know that sounds ridiculous... BUT hear me out.. I could really use some advice.

My family started playing teasing me as a kid about being "allergic to exercise".

The first time I remember it happening, I was in Ocean City, Maryland. I was walking on the boardwalk when all of the sudden my legs became INSANELY itchy.
I was with my Aunt and she wasn't sure what to do with me. My legs turned blood red and blotchy... and the itchy feeling would not go away... I scratched myself until I began to bleed and I remember crying like a baby.

It's been going on since then (and possibly before, I just don't remember it). When I'm walking or jogging outdoors (and even sometimes in the basement on the treadmill) the itching starts.

These are the following things I do know about this mystery condition:
*It happens dispite the temperature (at one time I thought it was the cold air)
*The clothing I'm wearing has no affect (I thought the material was bothering my skin)
    *Using lotion has not helped
    *I have no known allergies

I have seen 4 different primary care docs over the years... trying to get an answer to this annoying itch problem. I have yet to get an answer. I've taken every suggestion I can...

I just hope that someone out there has some insight that could help me. I've gone running in the area a few times lately and I've really enjoyed it. The activity is always cut short though by my inability to stop scratching at my legs. I'd like to persue more outdoor exercise and I NEED help!!

Thanks for your time! Any ideas are appreciated.

Hey girl.  Funny you mention this, I too become itchy (my  forearms) when I exercise or even walk. I wonder if it's the blood rushing through my veins? hmm? i hope someone has some input.  I never really thought about it until now that you posted this.  Although I don't scratch to the point of drawing blood.  I know when I'm done and take a cool shower, it seems to go away.

If no physician can figure it out, maybe is psychosematic and a therapist could help.

I hope you get this figured out!  Good luck.

Wow! That is quite the allergy to have! I hope that article helps though it just seems to tell people to stop when it does, which defeats the purpose of working out lol. Hope you figure it out!!

You are not crazy. I have something similar, but not as drastic. When I work out in a gym or outside, I break out into full body hives. I want scratch my skin off. It's primarily on the hands, arms, and chest, but it's everywhere. It also happens to me when it's cold. My dermatologist called it exercise and cold induced urticaria. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do beside take a daily antihistimine to block the reaction.

I certainly doesn't sound like its all in your head to me but I suppose that's possible too. My thought is that instead of fighting it, have you tried accepting it and working around it? Like instead of walking or jogging, do water exercises. Water will generally cool your body while you exercise.  Just make sure the water is not overly warm -- not a sauna or hot tub just normal pool or lake water temperatures.

I don't think this is an uncommon condition.  When I was younger, my mother had a machine that you strapped around your butt and it wiggled.  Not sure what it was supposed to accomplish, but they were VERY popular machines at the time (1960's).  I remember always feeling itchy and getting red after getting off of it.  Maybe what your describing is something similar?

I have exercise induced asthma that is always more difficult in the sun (I know, it sound crazy).  I won't walk or exercise until it is cooler and dark in the evening and always use an inhaler first.
