I work with a lady that had RNY in 1996 and talk to her frequently, ask her questions as they pop in my head, stuff like that. Well, I saw her yesterday and she says 'oh yeah, get u some protein pills". Has anyone ever taken these in addition to the protein powder directly after surgery to help with hair loss? She says u can never get enough protein after surgery. However, i've searched the internet and can't find protein pills through any well known pharmacies (Walgreens, GNC, Vitamin Shoppe), so I'm a little weary of ordering them. What are your opinions and thoughts ???

I wasn't aware that protein was available in pill form, so I'm looking forward to checking back and seeing if anyone is familiar with them also.

Occasionally this comes up on the board.  I'm not very familiar with the pills, but I know that the amount of protein in the pills is not very high.  You are probably better off getting the protein from food or other supplements.  I would print some information on the pills and take it to your doctor for advice.

i Just looked at one of the links one of the posters posted. 1 pill=3 grams of protien. so if you need at least 60 g.rams of protien a day thats 20 pills. holy moley and its almost 40 bucks a bottle do not know how many are in the bottle but, it seems unrealistic. maybe it would be nice to have on hand if you were a tad bit short to add a little bit, or just to add the extra protien when you reach enough protien for the day, but just thought i would put that out there.

Thanks for doing some research.  I am not even going to bother looking at them, as they are obviously so not worth it!!  I'd rather drink my glass of skim milk to add a little protein.  Not to mention that its eight extra ounces of fluid consumption for a glass of skim milk also!!

You know its funny...  skim milk goes down the easiest on my tummy.  I can drink an 8 oz glass of milk within 10 minutes, and sometimes even sooner.  I drank 3 glasses yesterday and have already had 2 today.  I know I'll be drinking more today though, so that's a plus!!!

I loved skim milk prior to surgery, so I guess I'm pretty lucky in that respect.  I have heard some people say that they just can't drink it.  I used to be a 2% kind of girl, but being lactose intollerant, even the 2% would cramp my stomach at times, so I switched to skim.  Gotta love it!!!  LOL

Actually my dietician was  talking about them just recently.  There is only 1gram each.  I suppose if you do not mind taking about 70 a day they are great.

I checked them out too and I think that you all are seeing them in the wrong way. They are only meant to be a supplement not to replace eating all togetther. Think of them like vitamins I mean I take 4 vitamins per day so supplements a serving of protein pills between my meals seems like a great idea to me. One serving which is 3 pills contains 11.4 grams of protein so if you take them 3 times a day you have just added 34.2 grams of protein to your day without having to eat more meals which is difficult for some of us.

C'mon.  That would mean that each pill contained appox 3 grams of protein.  Do you know how large such a pill would be?  Either the manufacturer is lying (most likely), or these pills make the biggest honking calcium citrate pills look like Tic-Tacs.

Not to mention how expensive taking 12 pills each day would be!  Like someone else said, you'd be a lot better off drinking a few glasses of skim milk or soy milk a day, and it would be MUCH cheaper.

    Answer

There are many different type of protein pills availible. The 2 most common are proteins derived from whey and beef liver. You can find protein pills at your local nutrition center (GNC, etc.). Most of these pills are designed to be taken in conjunction with a high protein diet. Your body (i.e. your muscles) will take full advantage of the proteins you get from lean meats and dairy product, so use these pills as a supplement.

A word of warning: Many of these pills have high concentrations of B complex or B-12 vitamins. B-vitamin is a natural energy booster. So if you work out in the evening, you may want to avoid the supplements that have high B-vitamins. If you do work out in the evening, I would suggest taking one or two of the protein pills with dinner, 1-2 hours before you go lift.

If someone knows the answer to this let us know.  I think I will still call my surgeon and run this by him as I struggle daily with my protein intake!!

    Hugs to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't agree with her statement that you cant get enough protein. Too much protein long term can damage your kidneys. I would check out the protein pills, which I didn't know were around, with my surgeon or nut if I were you. Dont believe everything anyone tells you. Ask your team.

Unless you already have kidney damage, there is NO evidence high protein diet can affect your kidneys.

My surgeon disagrees. He has set a specific guideline for protein and doesn't want his patients to exceed it.

I think the main benefit/purpose of the protein pills are if a person is unable to get the required amount of protein through their standard diet. Some people become physically ill taking protein shakes/drinks and hate protein bars. Getting the protein from regular food can be very challenging and that is where the protein pills could be helpful.
