    Pre-op diet and diarrhea

So I'm scheduled for RYGB surgery on Monday the 15th, and I'm on the pre-op diet -- low carb, high protein, etc.  And I've developed diarrhea.  I called the surgeon's office, and the nurse said she had never heard of this being the result of the pre-op diet.  She also said she would discuss it with the surgeon but that she doubted -- given my current symptoms -- that he would be concerned.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any thoughts?

    Thanks, KK
lo carb, high protein gives me the opposite problem... hope you feel better soon.

I just did a little web research and I'm wondering if it could be MSG from all the frozen meals and boullion I'm eating.  Any thoughts?

I hated the pre-op stuff. Fortunately i only had to do the magnesium citrate for bowel prep on Saturday and had to suffer through the constant bathroom runs and not a week long cleanse.  Your body needs to be rid of all that build up in your colon so having diarrhea might not be a bad thing to prevent constipation after surgery. You'll still  have a few days before you go after surgery. Seems like everything gets stuck en route. But i am not a doc or nurse so i would check with your doc's office if it gets to the point your really concerned.

Good luck with the broths and boullions, i still cant stand the smell of that stuff. And i go off phase 1.. clear liquids tomorrow.  Yay!

So interesting -- I think different docs do things very differently.  I don't have to do magnesium citrate at all -- just 10 days of this annoying diet.  (I am hungry ALL the time!)  Also, I was told that I'd only be on clear liquids for the time I'm in the hospital, and then I'd be moving to foods the consistency of applesauce or thinner for the next two weeks.  (I stocked on baby food -- my kids think that's hilarious.)

Congratulations on your surgery and good luck with your recovery and weight loss!
yes!  i had awful diarrhea.  i blame the nasty protein drinks.  anyway, my situation was so awful and explosive (TMI) that my nut put me back on solids for week #2 of my pre-op diet.

you dont want to let diarrhea go on too long, you will get dehydrated, lose electrolytes, etc.  you need to go into surgery strong and healthy.

im glad i was on solids right before surgery.  i re-gained my strength and felt tons better!
