    OH Members,

After WLS, alcohol can affect you twice as much as it did when you were a pre-op.  OH Magazine/Newsletter would like to learn your prospective and hear about some of your personal expierences.  How has alcohol affected your post-op weight loss and your ability to consume even small amounts? You can post here or email me privately if you wish to remain anonymous.  Editor@ObesityHelp.com

I had a sleeve gastrectomy and tried a small sip of wine a few weeks ago and I found that it irritated my stomach so I have not tried any since.   Not worth the ache!

I had RNY 4 months ago. I have had a drink here and there with no effects at all. However, Saturday I was out with my family and had a few more then I expected. I cant say I got drunk but did get a healthy buzz on. I do think it took me much more then I remember pre surgery to catch a buzz but I guess that's the way it is. As far as losing that buzz quickly as I keep hearing people say. I dint think so. Once I stopped drinking I continued to feel the effects of the alcohol for a couple of hours after (I was at the casino so was up way too late playing slots).

Now the next day is when I really felt like crap. I was tired mostly because I was up all night probably not because I was drinking. But, my pouch was a bit sore for the rest of the day. I really had to watch what I ate and stick to water only to drink. Not sure if I was just having a crabby pouch day or if it was from the drinks I had. Which ever it was, I can honestly say I am not swearing off alcohol for ever. I will probably have a drink here and there and not worry about it.

Alcohol isn't my problem, food is.

I enjoy drinking socially and have noticed that alcohol affects me much quicker than before, I drink a bit less than before surgery and I feel that when I stop drinking the alcohol leave my system quicker.

Same here.  I get a buzz a lot quicker and the buzz leaves my system a lot quicker also.  Plus, I don't need nearly as much alcohol as I previously did (only 1 glass of wine).

I am six months post op and I tried a few sips of alcohol.  My ears felt on fire, my face felt flush, and I delevoped a really bad headache.  So needless to say, I won't be drinking alcohol anymore.  Wasn't a big drinker before surgery, so its not a big deal for me.

I am 16 months post op from Gastric bypass and am still afriad to drink. I would love drink socially again like I did before but I am scared to try it. I wonder what people are drinking when they do drink? and it the sugar in the Alcohol affects them? I get mild cases of dumping still so I know some of it depends on your body.

There is no reason to drink socially. If you are around people who think less of you for not soaking your pouch in alcohol, find some new companions.

Alcohol damages organs (including your brain) and dehydrates you. People who have had WLS don't need to be dehydrated! My doctor has me off of caffeine because it dehydrates but says nothing about alcohol. I suspect it is because he drinks and can't imagine giving it up.

If you are maintaining your weight loss, horray for you!!! Why would you risk adding empty calories that don't enhance your health?

I'll be following your blogs and forums to find out how you do that. I'm such a food addict, I'm not sure I will be successful.

I didnt say I wanted to go out everyday and get plastered! I just said that I would like to have drink when I go out every once in a while. Maybe have a drink when I go to a military ball or that once or twice I year I get to have a date night with my husband maybe go to a club and dance and have a drink...I had this surgery to live a normal life not to be so overly consumed with my weightloss that it hinders my life. I am maintaning, I have been since 7 months out. I drink caffine everyday, I am a big coffee drinker, but I make sure I get in everything else (water, protein, vits) as well. Please do follow my blogs, I hope it will help get your confidence up that you can live life and successfully keep the weight off.

What did I miss?  Where did she say that?  She didn't say anyone will think less of her for not drinking alcohol.

One drink socially here or there is not a big deal.  Our struggle is to be like normal people and normal people have a glass of wine, or a glass of champagne, or a piece of cake once in awhile.  I think it's great to finally be normal.

Drinking a glass of wine once a month isn't going to make her gain 100#.

I've seen a lot of people talk about blacking out after having a few drinks and not having a hangover.  I found this out this out the hard way and a lot of research.  I began taking my blood sugar levels and because the alcohol had increased my blood sugar (not a diabetic), regardless of whether I quit drinking or drank more, the insulin pumped in to my blood stream and when my parents tested my blood sugar after "blacking out,"  I found out that I was really "passing out" due to low blood sugar.  This was extremely dangerous and I could have even died.  I believe God kept me here to warn people of the difference.  If you "black out" and don't have a hangover, you have probably passed out due to low blood sugar.    I am 8 years post op, didn't drink in the first 3 years, drank for 2-3 yrs socially and then quit and haven't drank for 18 months after figuring all of this other stuff out.  Now I'm battling the effects of the alcohol screwing around with my insulin levels and possibly helping make me diabetic even though I had the surgery to help prevent it.  Good Luck all!

I drink liquor that I wash down with Crystal light. This to keep from burning my stomach and for flavor. Also I don't have too much fizz as with beer or too many calories as with mixed drinks (at least that is how I rationalize it to myself). The alcohol does affect me a lot faster. I found out the hard way that I will black out if I am not careful. When I say black out, I mean that I don't remember the end of my night. Luckily, I was drinking at home with my husband babysitting me
Everything in moderation....moderation for RNYers is less than normal.

Robin, are you listening to yourself?

You drink a damaging substance that you have to wash down because it burns and you have to add taste to because you don't like it. Then, if you get carried away, you black out. And you admit to having to rationalize.

You don't see the problem here?

By the way, not everything is good in moderation. There is poison in this world.

Just be aware of what drinking alcohol is about.

I had my sleeve done 19 months ago.  I do have an occasonal glass of wine but find that it does affect me faster than before my surgery.  If I am at an event that will include having more than 1-2 glasses of wine during an evening, such as a wedding reception, I will drink wine spritzers.  The carbonation of the mix does not bother me but then I take small sips.  I can not drink beer as it is too much carbonation for me even if I drink slow.  Any drink with liquor is totally out for me.  Especially if you get a bartender that is a heavy pourer.  I did go out and had one glass of wine one time and then did a shot of Schnapps.  Thank goodness I was with friends as they had to take care of me because it was like shooting the Schnapps directly into my veins and I was gone.  The absorption was that fast.  Big lesson learned.

I did notice that it is absorbed faster but then It is out of my system faster.  I know that I have to be very careful and have a designated driver if I drink at all as I know I could blow illegal on one drink due to the rapid absorption

Love wine, drink more than I should. If I drink too much as occasionally happens on  a weekend, it affects me for the whole next day. I will feel fine one moment, then an hour later, will feel like I am drunk again, even if I have not drank for hours. Alcohol is dangerous for RNY because it goes straight to the blood and liver. I do see how the cross addiction is easy to fall into.

    Nicole,

You justify your drinking by telling emjay that you don't dump when you drink. At least if you dumped the alcohol it would have time to distroy you liver and brain.

You admit that you drink too much (inabitlity to control) and that it effects you the whole next day. (causes problems).

Your one symptome away from alcoholism. Don't take my word for it. Research it.

Just be aware of what drinking alcohol is about.
